Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Highland warrior battles to reclaim his birthright in the first of a new series filled with seduction, revenge, and soul-stirring passion... They call him the Beast—a hardened mercenary whose heart seems as cold as his icy blue gaze. They do not know his true name: Niall Braewick, son of the Laird of Kincaid. It has been years since he escaped into the forest the night his father was murdered. Now he has returned, ablaze with a vengeful hunger. He will gain the MacClaren chief’s trust, gather his clan, and take back his lands. And take the MacClaren’s daughter as well... Though he pulled her from the river, saving her life, Elspeth has been warned to keep her distance from her father’s hired warrior. He is a barbarian—a shame, as he is far more compelling than the lechers and fools competing for her dowry. Little does she know that, like the castle itself, she is a prize Niall intends to claim...but will he extract blood for blood and possess what is his, or will his enemy’s beautiful, innocent daughter tempt him to forsake his dream of conquest?

  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book The Kincaid Stones written by Emerson Earl Kendrick and published by Guardian Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest history of the Kincaid family was in the 1500s, as O Tooles, and through marriage the name was changed to Kincaid. After many events that could have caused families with less courage to give up, the Kincaid family left Fort Fletcher (Hays, Kansas) for a location known only to Floyd Kincaid, the wagon master. They have no way of knowing what hazards, and joys, lie ahead, but are willing to confront the challenges with a courage that continues to grow stronger with each threat they face. About the Author E. Earl Kendrick is a native western Kansan, born and raised on a ranch his maternal grandparents had built in the 1800s. His parents were born in the late 1800s, and his story writing is gleaned much from their experience, as well as his own. Growing up with 7 kids, 150 cows, 30 horses, countless hogs, chickens, goats, cats and dogs is a child s paradise, and a good place to get in trouble. After the onslaught of M.S. in 1998, he has been disabled and has turned to writing to amuse himself and share with others. The paternal side of his family is Scot-Irish, and the maternal side is English. His dad, an old-time cowboy, homesteaded in Logan County, Kansas in 1906. His mother got her teaching certificate in 1918, and taught in several one-roomed school houses, until her marriage in 1927. This is a history in the making.

Book My Brother

Download or read book My Brother written by Jamaica Kincaid and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 1998-11-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamaica Kincaid's brother Devon Drew died of AIDS on January 19, 1996, at the age of thirty-three. Kincaid's incantatory, poetic, and often shockingly frank recounting of her brother's life and death is also a story of her family on the island of Antigua, a constellation centered on the powerful, sometimes threatening figure of the writer's mother. My Brother is an unblinking record of a life that ended too early, and it speaks volumes about the difficult truths at the heart of all families. My Brother is a 1997 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction.

Book A History of the African American People Proposed by Strom Thurmond

Download or read book A History of the African American People Proposed by Strom Thurmond written by and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A truly funny sendup of the corrupt politics of academe, the publishing industry and politics, as well as a subtle but biting critique of racial ideology.” —Publishers Weekly This “hilarious high-concept satire” (Publishers Weekly), by the PEN/Faulkner finalist and acclaimed author of Telephone and Erasure, is a fictitious and satirical chronicle of South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond’s desire to pen a history of African-Americans—his and his aides’ belief being that he has done as much, or more, than any American to shape that history. An epistolary novel, The History follows the letters of loose cannon Congressional office workers, insane interns at a large New York publishing house and disturbed publishing executives, along with homicidal rival editors, kindly family friends, and an aspiring author named Septic. Strom Thurmond appears charming and open, mad and sure of his place in American history. “Outrageously funny . . . it could become a cult classic.” —Library Journal “I think Percival Everett is a genius. I’ve been a fan since his first novel . . . He’s a brilliant writer and so damn smart I envy him.” —Terry McMillan, New York Times-bestselling author of It’s Not All Downhill from Here “God bless Percival Everett, whose dozens of idiosyncratic books demonstrate a majestic indifference to literary trends, the market or his critics.”?The Wall Street Journal

Book Jamaica Kincaid s Writings of History

Download or read book Jamaica Kincaid s Writings of History written by Antonia Purk and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-09-18 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamaica Kincaid’s works consistently explore how colonial history affects contemporary everyday lives. Throughout her novels, short fiction, and non-fictional essays, Kincaid’s texts engage with history through its medial representations, which are starkly determined by colonial perspectives. This study examines the entanglements of temporalities in current perceptions of the past and how literary text intervenes in historical consciousness. With a focus on the media text, image, and the human body, the chapters of this book demonstrate how Kincaid’s "poetics of impermanence" counter colonial representations of history with strategies of ambiguity, repetition, and redirection. Kincaid’s texts repeat and revise aspects of colonial history – a process that decenters the totality of historical colonial ideology and replaces it with self-determined versions of the past through a multiplication of perspectives and voices.

Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated story of three girls caught up in the most curious of mysteries. “Party has layers. It functions as a subtle message about what it means to witness horror to such a degree that we lose our language for it; it is a quiet story about coming of age, suddenly, as a young black girl because of what the world shows us. It is about the many words our silence can hold, the way our absences can ring as loudly and discordantly as the words we do feel able to say.” —Literary Hub Three girls—Pam, Bess, and Sue—attend a party to celebrate the publication of the first of the Nancy Drew mystery books. There are many distractions at the fancy affair: flower arrangements, partygoers, refreshments, and lots and lots of marble. Suddenly, the oldest girl, Pam, sees what can only be described as something truly . . . bilious . . . not good! Bess sees it too. The youngest, Sue, does not, and as usual she has a hard time getting anyone to tell her anything. Party: A Mystery is a beautifully drawn adventure story that promises questions that will grab children, but does not guarantee an answer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant look at colonialism and its effects in Antigua--by the author of Annie John "If you go to Antigua as a tourist, this is what you will see. If you come by aeroplane, you will land at the V. C. Bird International Airport. Vere Cornwall (V. C.) Bird is the Prime Minister of Antigua. You may be the sort of tourist who would wonder why a Prime Minister would want an airport named after him--why not a school, why not a hospital, why not some great public monument. You are a tourist and you have not yet seen . . ." So begins Jamaica Kincaid's expansive essay, which shows us what we have not yet seen of the ten-by-twelve-mile island in the British West Indies where she grew up. Lyrical, sardonic, and forthright by turns, in a Swiftian mode, A Small Place cannot help but amplify our vision of one small place and all that it signifies.

Book Jamaica Kincaid

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Brooks Bouson
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2012-02-01
  • ISBN : 0791482928
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Jamaica Kincaid written by J. Brooks Bouson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haunted by the memories of her powerfully destructive mother, Jamaica Kincaid is a writer out of necessity. Born Elaine Potter Richardson, Kincaid grew up in the West Indies in the shadow of her deeply contemptuous and abusive mother, Annie Drew. Drawing heavily on Kincaid's many remarks on the autobiographical sources of her writings, J. Brooks Bouson investigates the ongoing construction of Kincaid's autobiographical and political identities. She focuses attention on what many critics find so enigmatic and what lies at the heart of Kincaid's fiction and nonfiction work: the "mother mystery." Bouson demonstrates, through careful readings, how Kincaid uses her writing to transform her feelings of shame into pride as she wins the praise of an admiring critical establishment and an ever-growing reading public.
