Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of a Crime, Vol. 1 of 2 Louis Bonaparte made great protestations, and every thing seemed to favour him. After such solemn assur anecs, why doubt his honour? Towards the end of October, 1848, when he became candidate for the Presi dency, he called on one living at no. 37, Rue de la Tour d'auvergne, to Whom he said: AS I have been calumniated, I now come to give you an explanation. DO you think me mad enough to venture a Napoleon's career? There are two fit models for a man Of great am bition to be found in Napoleon and Washington, one representing genius and the other virtue. TO say you will be a genius is absurd, but to state you will act as a man of honour is an honest confession. How much of this depends on our own free will? To be a genius? No. To be an upright man? Yes. To instil genius into ourselves is impossible; but to act honourably is quite possible. DO you consider me mad enough to renew the Napoleonic era by one thing only, - crime? That would be a mighty ambition certainly. The Re public is established, and as I am not a great man, I Shall not attempt to imitate Napoleon; but as I am an honourable man, I shall take Washington as a model The name of Bonaparte shall twice be inscribed in the history Of France; the first with crime and feats of glory, the second with integrity and honour. The latter will avail doubtless far more than the former. Why? Because Napoleon may have been the greater, but Wash ington is the better man; and I prefer being a good Citizen to a guilty hero. So much for my ambition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It was also much more convenient and less cumbersome than assault and battery, and so, except where technical exactness was necessary, it came to be generally used in its place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of a Crime At this time also District Attorney Graham was living in the fatuous belief that he enjoyed the favor of David Martin and would be selected as the Republican candidate for Mayor. To him one day there came a rude awakening, and, with mutterings upon his lips over Martin's treachery, he withdrew from the field in the interest of his friend, City Solicitor War wick, with the understanding that the latter would have the full and earnest support of Mayor Stuart and all the power that is back of the Chief Magis trate of Philadelphia. The Mayor, however, proved a reed and bowed to the wind, and, for the time being apparently, Warwick abandoned the field, and with downcast mien admitted his undoing. At this time also the Pennsylvania Railroad, with all the power of that grand and mighty corporation, was anxious to bring about the nomination Of General Louis Wagner. Over this troublous scene hovered the dark figure of David Martin, anxiously cogitating which of these Mayoralty movements would most richly enlarge his suddenly and mysteriously acquired wealth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Crimes and Misdemeanors, Vol. 2 of 3 An actual breaking of the house may be by making a hole in the wall; by forcing open the door; by putting back, picking, or opening the lock with a false key by breaking the window by taking a pane of glass out of the window, either by taking out the nails or other fastenings, or by drawing or bending them back, or by putting back the leaf of a window with an instrument. And even the drawing or lifting up the latch, (h) where the door is not otherwise fastened; the turning the key where the door is locked on the inside. Or the unloosing any other fastening which the owner has provided, will amount to a breaking. (i) Where a pane of glass had been cut for a month, but there was no opening whatever, as every portion of the glass remained exactly in its place, and the prisoner was both seen and heard to put his hand through the glass, this was held a sufficient breaking. (j) The prisoner got into the prosecutor's cellar, by lifting up a heavy grating, and into his house by forcing open a window which opened on hinges, and was fastened by two nails, which acted as wedges, but would open by pushing: upon a case reserved, the judges held the forcing open the Window to be a sufficient breaking. (k) The prisoner entered a house by pushing down the upper sash of a window, which had no fastening, and was kept in its place by the pulley weight only. There was an outer shutter, but it was not put to. A case was reserved upon the question, whether the pushing down the sash was a breaking, and all the judges were unanimous that it was.
