Dr Wardle makes full use of the evidence of newpapers, contemporary accounts and statistics relating to population, child employment, public health, welfare agencies, and charitable organisations to produce an integrated study of the educational, social and economic aspects of a town's growth over 100 years. The experience of Nottingham is compared (generally favourably) with that of other cities. Nottingham was originally a fortified settlement or burgh. The town had a ditch around it and an earth rampart with a wooden palisade on top. In 920 the English king recaptured Nottingham and he built a bridge across the Trent. Nottingham was famous for its Lace during the industrial revolution. Today it is the City of Nottingham.

This text explores the relationship between the development of power based machinery and the more traditional crafts of the area.
