Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Duelling in two volumes is a historical work by British author J. G. Millingen. In this chronological account, author deals with the custom and tradition of duels from the dark age of civilization to the closest examples in modern age. Concerning the dueling among the ancients, author offers examples of Achilles fighting Hector, Turnus and Aeneas and other examples from Greek and Roman history. However, he makes a distinction between these legendary combat duels and later personal duels which were prompted by different causes and reasons. Religion and love are emphasized as two main triggers that caused numerous duels throughout the history. Due to sources and documents, the book mostly deals with duels in France and Britain, but also covers this practice and tradition in other European parts and countries.

Book Brief Display of the Origin and History of Ordeals And a History of Duels

Download or read book Brief Display of the Origin and History of Ordeals And a History of Duels written by James P. Gilchrist and published by . This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rare and splendidly reproduced book is a companion volume to Millington s History of Duelling , and gives further insight into the history of the duel. The historical examination begins by looking at the origin and history of ordeals around the world, and the parallel development of the trial by single combat, which then developed into the duel. It also gives details of the civil right in the Middle Ages to claim the right to trial by single combat and the similar right in criminal law, whereby the accused could challenge the accuser to stand and fight, the winner being in the right legally. The Court of Chivalry or Honour is described with its function and status in history, important in understanding the ethos surrounding these curious practices. There is also a listing of no fewer that 172 famous duels, giving further details supplementing those in Millington, as well as the facts about other duels. This is a book which should not be missed by the enthusiast for duels, sword-fighting and the history of ordeals, chivalry and honour.

Book Notes on Duels and Duelling

Download or read book Notes on Duels and Duelling written by Lorenzo Sabine and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Duels and Duelling: Alphabetically Arranged, With a Preliminary Historical Essay This page - the last to be written - is the author's own. Here he may speak to his reader without restraint, and, if he will, as to a friend. The writer, in availing himself of the privilege accorded to all, would remark, in the first place, that whoever opens this volume in the expectation of finding mention of every challenge given and of every duel fought, in the United States or elsewhere, will be disappointed. The work, in its claims as a record, is sufficiently moderate. Bred to active business, and employed nearly the whole of his life in commercial or kindred pursuits, the author's leisure hours only have been devoted to books. In order to make them most of these hours, the plan of taking and filing away for us, as occasion might admit, memoranda of incidents and facts of interest, was adopted in early youth, and has been continued until the present moment. These Notes are, then, simply the results of common and every-day reading, observations, and conversation, for a series of years, in this particular direction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fog of a Paris dawn in 1832, ƒvariste Galois, the 20-year-old founder of modern algebra, was shot and killed in a duel. That gunshot, suggests Amir Alexander, marked the end of one era in mathematics and the beginning of another. Arguing that not even the purest mathematics can be separated from its cultural background, Alexander shows how popular stories about mathematicians are really morality tales about their craft as it relates to the world. In the eighteenth century, Alexander says, mathematicians were idealized as child-like, eternally curious, and uniquely suited to reveal the hidden harmonies of the world. But in the nineteenth century, brilliant mathematicians like Galois became Romantic heroes like poets, artists, and musicians. The ideal mathematician was now an alienated loner, driven to despondency by an uncomprehending world. A field that had been focused on the natural world now sought to create its own reality. Higher mathematics became a world unto itselfÑpure and governed solely by the laws of reason. In this strikingly original book that takes us from Paris to St. Petersburg, Norway to Transylvania, Alexander introduces us to national heroes and outcasts, innocents, swindlers, and martyrsÐall uncommonly gifted creators of modern mathematics.

Book excerpt: Based upon a wide range of historical and literary sources, Swordsmen is a scholarly study of the military experiences of peers and gentlemen from the British Isles who volunteered to fight in the religious and dynastic wars of mainland Europe from the English intervention in the Dutch war of independence in 1585 to the death of the soldier-king William III in 1702. This apprenticeship in arms exposed these aristocrats to the chivalric revival, the military revolution and the values of neostoicism, and revived the martial ethos of the English aristocracy and reinvigorated the martial traditions of the Irish and Scots.
