Book A Critical History of Modern English Jurisprudence

Download or read book A Critical History of Modern English Jurisprudence written by George H. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical History of Modern English Jurisprudence: A Study in Logic, Politics, and Morality A limited edition of this little work has been printed, with a view of submitting it to friends of the author, and others, who, he may have reason to suppose, are inter ested in political science. But in submitting it even to this limited class of readers, the author is painfully con scious, from experience, that both the subject of the work, and the method in which it is treated stand in need of apology. In regard to the subject, - which is Jurisprudence, its study in England and this country, within the last fifty years, has fallen into almost entire neglect; and there is now no subject more generally unpopular. The general reader regards it as belonging peculiarly to the province of the lawyer, and the lawyer, in general, as a study of no practical utility, and, with which, consequently, he has no concern. And the few who are addicted to philoso phy, turning to the works of the modern English jurists, find there something which bears no resemblance to real Jurisprudence, but which has usurped its place, and even its name. Book The Historical Method in Ethics and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Historical Method in Ethics and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by John Handyside and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Method in Ethics and Other Essays The papers here brought together are all that remains of the work of one of the acutest and most thoughtful of the younger generation of philosophical teachers. Their author fell in the war, being one of those who counted his life a little thing to give in so great a cause. He was thirty-three when he died, and he had pub lished next to nothing in his lifetime. These three essays were found in their present form among his papers. The first and longest was clearly intended for publication, either by itself or as part of a larger work on ethics; the other two bore traces of having been originally prepared for some Philosophical Society, but both would have been sent as articles to the philosophical reviews by any one with a less exacting standard of work than Handyside. The three are now published together, both for their own intrinsic value and as a tribute to his memory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Political Economy of Humanism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Political Economy of Humanism Classic Reprint written by Henry Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political Economy of Humanism To have life and practicality, political economy should be studied in connection with its counterpart, the human constitution. Its positive element is subjective, while environment, or the objective, only constitutes its negativ ity. In other words, mind is the active worker, while labor, capital, land, wages, profits, and values are its instruments or outward articulations. Cooperation and competition are not external qualities belonging to some legal frame work or social system, but are dispositions in man. They cannot be put on or off as occasion may demand, but are matters of moral and ethical education. So, too, a true socialism is not a matter of political form, but its location must be within the human heart and consciousness. Book The Oxford Handbook of the Political Economy of International Trade

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Political Economy of International Trade written by Lisa L. Martin and published by Oxford Handbooks. This book was released on 2015 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the Political Economy of International Trade surveys the literature on the politics of international trade and highlights the most exciting recent scholarly developments. The Handbook is focused on work by political scientists that draws extensively on work in economics, but is distinctive in its applications and attention to political features; that is, it takes politics seriously. The Handbook's framework is organized in part along the traditional lines of domestic society-domestic institutions - international interaction, but elaborates this basic framework to showcase the most important new developments in our understanding of the political economy of trade. Within the field of international political economy, international trade has long been and continues to be one of the most vibrant areas of study. Drawing on models of economic interests and integrating them with political models of institutions and society, political scientists have made great strides in understanding the sources of trade policy preferences and outcomes. The 27 chapters in the Handbook include contributions from prominent scholars around the globe, and from multiple theoretical and methodological traditions. The Handbook considers the development of concepts and policies about international trade; the influence of individuals, firms, and societies; the role of domestic and international institutions; and the interaction of trade and other issues, such as monetary policy, environmental challenges, and human rights. Showcasing both established theories and findings and cutting-edge new research, the Handbook is a valuable reference for scholars of political economy.

Book History and Historiography in Classical Utilitarianism 1800 1865

Download or read book History and Historiography in Classical Utilitarianism 1800 1865 written by Callum Barrell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first comprehensive account of the utilitarians' historical thought intellectually resituates their conceptions of philosophy and politics, at a time when the past acquired new significances as both a means and object of study. Drawing on published and unpublished writings - and set against the intellectual backdrops of Scottish philosophical history, German and French historicism, romanticism, positivism, and the rise of social science and scientific history - Callum Barrell recovers the depth with which Jeremy Bentham, James Mill, George Grote, and John Stuart Mill thought about history as a site of philosophy and politics. He argues that the utilitarians, contrary to their reputations as ahistorical and even antihistorical thinkers, developed complex frameworks in which to learn from and negotiate the past, inviting us to rethink the foundations of their ideas, as well as their place in - and relationship to - nineteenth-century philosophy and political thought.

Book Foundations of Marketing Thought

Download or read book Foundations of Marketing Thought written by D.G. Brian Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study and teaching of marketing as a university subject is generally understood to have originated in America during the early 20th century emerging as an applied branch of economics. This book tells a different story describing the influence of the German Historical School on institutional economists and economic historians who pioneered the study of marketing in America and Britain during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Drawing from archival materials at the University of Wisconsin, Harvard Business School, and the University of Birmingham, this book documents the early intellectual genealogy of marketing science and traces the ideas that early American and British economists borrowed from German scholars to study and teach marketing. Early marketing scholars both in America and Britain openly credited the German School, and its ideology based on social welfare and distributive justice was a strong motivation for many institutional economists who studied marketing in America, predating the modern macro-marketing school by many decades. Challenging many traditional beliefs, this book provides an authoritative new narrative of the origins of marketing thought. It will be of great interest to educators, scholars and advanced students with an interest in marketing theory and history, and in the history of economic thought.

Book George Eliot and Money

Download or read book George Eliot and Money written by Dermot Coleman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other Victorian novelists George Eliot rarely incorporated stock market speculation and fraud into her plots, but meditations on money, finance and economics, in relation both to individual ethics and to wider social implications, infuse her novels. This volume examines Eliot's understanding of money and economics, its bearing on her moral and political thought, and the ways in which she incorporated that thought into her novels. It offers a detailed account of Eliot's intellectual engagements with political economy, utilitarianism, and the new liberalism of the 1870s, and also her practical dealings with money through her management of household and business finances and, in later years, her considerable investments in stocks and shares. In a wider context, it presents a detailed study of the ethics of economics in nineteenth-century England, tracing the often uncomfortable relationship between morality and economic utility experienced by intellectuals of the period.
