Book Critical White Studies

Download or read book Critical White Studies written by Richard Delgado and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No longer content with accepting whiteness as the norm, critical scholars have turned their attention to whiteness itself. In "Critical White Studies: Looking Behind the Mirror," numerous thinkers, including Toni Morrison, Eric Foner, Peggy McIntosh, Andrew Hacker, Ruth Frankenberg, John Howard Griffin, David Roediger, Kathleen Heal Cleaver, Noel Ignatiev, Cherrie Moraga, and Reginald Horsman, attack such questions as: *How was whiteness invented, and why? *How has the category whiteness changed over time? *Why did some immigrant groups, such as the Irish and Jews, start out as nonwhite and later became white? *Can some individual people be both white and nonwhite at different times, and what does it mean to pass for white? *At what point does pride in being white cross the line into white power or white supremacy? *What can whites concerned over racial inequity or white privilege do about it? Science and pseudoscience are presented side by side to demonstrate how our views on whiteness often reflect preconception, not fact. For example, most scientists hold that race is not a valid scientific category -- genetic differences between races are insignificant compared to those within them. Yet, the one drop rule, whereby those with any nonwhite heritage are classified as nonwhite, persists even today. As the bell curve controversy shows, race concepts die hard, especially when power and prestige lie behind them. A sweeping portrait of the emerging field of whiteness studies, "Critical White Studies" presents, for the first time, the best work from sociology, law, history, cultural studies, and literature. Delgado and Stefancic expressly offer critical white studies as the next step in critical race theory. In focusing on whiteness, not only do they ask nonwhites to investigate more closely for what it means for others to be white, but also they invite whites to examine themselves more searchingly and to look behind the mirror.

Mr. Osborne, a Clergyman of the Established Church, in a letter to the London Times, says, "the exodus of the Irish is caused by the cruelty of the landlords. Their evictions make the starving homeless." In converting small farms into sheep walks in Scotland, the house of Southerland has been conspicuous. This system has had the most pernicious influence on the labouring people of Scotland. It has demoralized the peasantry. It removes the labourers from the restraint of home, collects them in boothies or barracks, and initiates them in every species of vice. Hugh Miller, in his charming autobiography, gives a deplorable account of the demoralization of the Scotch labourers in the last fifty years. 12. "They (the Exeter Hall philanthropists) would save the Sarawak cut throats with their poisoned spears, but they ignore the thirty thousand needle women, the three million paupers, and the Connaught potential cannibalism." [carlyle. 13. The Abolition party hire spies or agents to report every thing in accordance with their own wishes and prejudices. They exaggerate facts, receive tales and rumours for truth, describe isolated abuses as the ordinary condition of Slavery--this they must do, to be deemed trust-worthy by their employers, and to earn their living. One of these absurd stories--lately revived by the Westminster Review--asserts that, in Jamaica, on a single plantation, there had been seventy deaths from violence for six from natural causes. See what Lewis says of the same people; "I never saw people look more happy, in my life, and I believe their condition to be more comfortable than that of the labourers of Great Britain." 14. The philanthropic labours of England have converted efficient slaves into worthless...

Download or read book Cannibals All written by George Fitzhugh and published by . This book was released on 1857 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern intellectual George Fitzhugh provides a passionate defense of slavery in this nearly 400-page volume published in 1857. Further developing ideas in his previous work Sociology for the South, Fitzhugh not only defends slavery but attacks the entire liberal tradition. Attacking Adam Smith, John Locke, Thomas Jefferson and others, Fitzhugh argues that free markets are harmful to society by forcing the lower classes into crushing labor and poverty. The answer, Fitzhugh argues, is slavery--not only for blacks, but for whites as well. "Slavery," he writes, "is a form, and the very best form, of socialism."
