Book The Hindu Religious Year

Download or read book The Hindu Religious Year written by M. Underhill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hindu Religious Year A few years ago I published a small book under the name of The Hindu Year: a Primer on the Hindu Calendar of Maharashtra. It consisted of the Calendar which forms Chapter VII of the present book, with very short comments in the form of footnotes. It was pointed out by several readers at the time that there was room for a much fuller book on the same subject, which, while dealing in detail with customs in Maharashtra, should describe the festivals common to the whole of Hindu India, and so prove useful to a much wider circle. An attempt to do this has been made in the present book. A mere list of feasts is unsatisfactory. Some attempt to trace customs back to their sources is necessary. The study of Anthropology in India still leaves large fields untouched, and much yet remains to be done. But in Chapters III to VI, the existing feasts have been related in each case to what I believe to be their origins, whether Sun worship with resultant Seasonal feasts. Moon worship with resultant Monthly feasts. Planet worship, the worship of Siva and Vishnu, or the worship of Animistic deities. Chapter I deals with the Hindu method of reckoning time, Chapter II with Auspicious and Inauspicious seasons, while Chapter VIII applies only to Maharashtra, being a list, with notes, of the principal Religious Fairs of the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hindu Feasts, Fasts and Ceremonies There is no country in the world, moreover, where such studies are of more importance than in India, for with the Hindu, customs and traditions explain almost every act of his every day life. As a learned writer on the Hindus has well said: With the Hindu, religion is not a thing for times and seasons only, but professes to regulate his life in its many rela tions. It orders ceremonies to be performed on his behalf before he is born, and others after his death. It ordains those attendant on his birth, his early training, his food, his style of dress and its manufacture, his employment, marriage, amusements. It seeks to regulate not only his private life, but also his domestic and national. To treat of the ordinary life of the Hindu is to describe his religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Ancient Hinduism Before commencing our studies it will be well for us to form a clear notion of the meaning of the word Hinduism. Hinduism Is the name of the orthodox religion of the Hindus, an Aryan race which migrated to the banks of the Indus, and gradually spread over that large portion of India now known 335 Hindustan. It is because Hinduism is the name given to the religion of the Hindu race that I venture, for philosophical purposes. The plan Of the book is the same, but, in the light of friendly criticisms, I have revised and improved the whole. I have omitted a few pas sages. On the other hand, I have added an Appendix, showing the present attitude of the more intelligent Hindus towards social reform. I am indebted to the Honorary Secretary, S. P. C. K. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of India: Sketches in the History of Hindu Religion and Morals N this little book I have brought together a few sketches of the things that are nearest to the heart of the millions of India. The heart is not the head, and therefore I have said but little of the great intellectual problems which have busied the Hindu brain for well-nigh two thousand years. But from the schools of the Pandits certain thoughts have gone forth which in a more or less vague form have become an integral part of the people's stock of ideas. Some thing therefore has been said of these, but not much. The main part of my task has been to shew what have been the worthiest answers given by the Hindus to the great questions of man's relation to God and to fellow-man. These answers have been many. Some are from learned schoolmen, like Sankara and Ramanuja others are from simple laymen, like Vemana. But all of them are utterances of the vital faith of millions. We dare not ignore them. If I have ventured to speak in condemnation of the unworthy legends which have gathered 5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Hinduism: Being an Account of the Religion and Life of the Hindus in Northern India It may perhaps appear strange to some readers to see several subjects treated of in this book which professes to be an account of the Hindu religion but it must ever be borne in mind that, with the Hindu, religion is not a thing for times and seasons only, but professes to regulate his life in all its many relations. It orders ceremonies to be performed on behalf of a man before he is born, and gives instructions to his descendants, which they must follow in order that his happiness may be secured after death. It regulates the ceremonies attendant on his birth, his early training, his food and its cooking, his style of dress and its manufacture, his employment, marriage, amusements - his whole life from before his birth until generations after his death. Religion seeks to regulate not only the private life of the Hindu, but also his domestic and national relations, and no contingencies are possible for which it has not provided laws. To treat, then, of the ordinary life of the Hindu is to describe the Hindu religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
