Book excerpt: Bringing together texts from a variety of sectarian traditions, this reader provides the broadest selection of primary source Hindu literature available to date. The volume is divided into two major parts. The first section presents selections that explore major themes in classical Sanskrit traditions, including those in the Vedic, Upanisadic, and Dharma literatures, as well as the classical philosophical-religious schools. The second part includes selections that highlight the sectarian and devotional movements related to major deities such as Vishnu, Shiva, Krishna, Rama, Sant, Tantra, and the goddess figures. In addition to a general introductory chapter on Indian literature, each major section is introduced by an essay that places the selections within the context of Hindu history. This comprehensive reader stands on its own as an indispensable anthology of original textual sources for courses in Hinduism, while also serving as a companion volume to the text The Many Colors of Hinduism: A Thematic-Historical Introduction.

Book excerpt: This introduction to the main Hindu deities is illustrated with 65 delightful, delicate Indian miniature paintings from the last century. Hindu life and belief is rooted in a mythology of gods and goddesses. The origins and adventures of the members of the pantheon are the source of Hindu philosophy, religious practice and social behaviour. It is an ancient, vast and varied mythology, which has changed across historical eras and geographical regions. Deities have their origins in different cultures that have gradually coalesced and, across time, the gods themselves have undergone vast shifts in role and importance. The myths, and the divinities themselves, embrace all aspects of experience: creation and destruction, benevolence and terror, love and rage. The mythology works at many levels: sometimes combined with local folk beliefs it provides simple personifications of natural phenomena, teaches moral lessons, explains the creation of the universe; at the other extreme it offers sophisticated theories of matter, energy, time and space. Here, a concise introduction outlines the development of Hindu religion and culture in India, while the commentary to each of the paintings introduces the god or goddess depicted. The miniature paintings illustrating this book come from the Oriental Manuscripts Collection in the Institute of Oriental Studies, St Petersburg.

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1810 edition. Excerpt: ... point of size, more on an equality with their divine partners than in the casts and plates. What the Arabic 5* can mean on a Hindu coin, No. 16. I cannot say. The four remaining coins, Nos. 18. to 21. of Plate 104. all relate, I think, to Vishicu, his two commonest attributes being, especially on 1Q. and 20. discernible. The originals of 18. and 1Q. are not at this moment within my reach, and are not, I judge, so perfect in their features as some of the others. But little has hitherto been brought to light on the subject of ancient Hindu coinage, and this is no place for such discussion. Bartolomeo says, Voyage, p. 85. that " the oldest Indian coins have no inscription, but only the representation of a cow, an elephant, the lingam, or some deity. Anq.uetil du Perron, however, asserts, that he saw some with writing on them, which, as he pretends, were coined before the period of Vikramaditya; but I never had an opportunity of seeing any of this kind." Until the conquest of Mysore, such coins have not, I believe, been seen by Europeans: except such as were then developed, I never had either an opportunity of seeing any. There can be little doubt of most of the coins represented in Plate 104. (I except, of course, No. 16. put in merely as comparative, ) having been struck as early as the age of Vikramaditya. Our last Plate (105.) still remains unnoticed. It is taken.from a vase, fully as elegant as the plate indicates, of gilt copper, that had been long unclaimed and kicked about at the India house, but is now appropriately ornamenting its museum: its contents may be a quart; and it is certainly a very beautiful specimen of Hindu workmanship, and highly creditable to their skill. Sesha, or Naga, or Vasoky, five-headed, with Vishnu...

Book excerpt: Reflecting the spirit of East Indian myths, legends, and fables, these illustrations were compiled by one of the nineteenth century's foremost Orientalists. Edward Moor published The Hindu Pantheon in 1810, and this new volume draws upon his exposition of India's religious iconography to offer a spectacular array of images of Hindu deities. Dramatic engravings and line drawings include scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata as well as temple images of Krishna, Vishnu, Siva, and other major gods and goddesses. Many are derived from bronze figurines; others are reproduced from manuscript illustrations. All appear with captions for ease of identification.

It was long the only work of any extent or authority upon its special subject, and succeeding writers have drawn largely from it.
