Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Himalayan Districts of Kooloo, Lahoul, and SpitiIt was, at one time, my desire to have first written the history of Kooloo, the rough notes of which I have for a long time had by me; but there were difficulties regarding dates, which I have not yet been able to clear up; and as I had not time this year to do both the History and the General Account of the subdivision, I have elected to postpone the former till a more fitting opportunity may occur.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kulu and Lahoul: With Illustrations and a Map IN my last book on the Himalaya I expressed a hope that one day I should be able to travel in Kulu, Lahoul, and Spiti. Since then my luck has so far favoured me that I was able to spend a leave of more than six months in two of these attractive districts, and able to enjoy almost the most delightful time that I have ever had in the Himalaya. These districts, I venture to say, will never be over run or become hackneyed, even to the extent that parts of Kashmir are. Book Himalayan Wonderland

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Penguin Books India
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0670084131
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Himalayan Wonderland written by Manohar Singh Gill and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2010 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 16 black and white and 8 colour illustrations In the summer of 1962, a restless young Indian administrator, Manohar Singh Gill, made an arduous journey from the north Indian plains to the farthest reaches of the Indian Himalayas- the Lahaul and Spiti valleys- and spent a year there, living and working amongst the people. Gill went on to a distinguished career in the civil services and government, but his experience of the relentless beauty of these spectacular Himalayan deserts and the generosity of the people of this land changed him for life. Part memoir, part travel book and part anthropology, Himalayan Wonderland is a witty, opinionated account of Gill's lifelong affair with this extraordinary region. The book, however, is much more than one man's account of a place - it is a hopeful and enlightening view of the practice of administration and the joy of working with people. Illustrated with more than forty photographs taken by Gill himself, and including detailed contour maps and information on trekking routes in Lahaul and Spiti, this is a remarkably illuminating and accessible account of this faraway land- from the 1960s, when few knew about the place, to today's unpredictable world of receding glaciers and lost cultures.

Book Secularism and Religion Making

Download or read book Secularism and Religion Making written by Markus Dressler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book conceives of "religion-making" broadly as the multiple ways in which social and cultural phenomena are configured and reconfigured within the matrix of a world-religion discourse that is historically and semantically rooted in particular Western and predominantly Christian experiences, knowledges, and institutions. It investigates how religion is universalized and certain ideas, social formations, and practices rendered "religious" are thus integrated in and subordinated to very particular - mostly liberal-secular - assumptions about the relationship between history, politics, and religion. The individual contributions, written by a new generation of scholars with decisively interdisciplinary approaches, examine the processes of translation and globalization of historically specific concepts and practices of religion - and its dialectical counterpart, the secular - into new contexts. This volume contributes to the relatively new field of thought that aspires to unravel the thoroughly intertwined relationships between religion and secularism as modern concepts.

Book Pastoral practices in High Asia

Download or read book Pastoral practices in High Asia written by Hermann Kreutzmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-28 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In conventional views, pastoralism was classified as a stage of civilization that needed to be abolished and transcended in order to reach a higher level of development. In this context, global approaches to modernize a rural society have been ubiquitous phenomena independent of ideological contexts. The 20th century experienced a variety of concepts to settle mobile groups and to transfer their lifestyles to modern perceptions. Permanent settlements are the vivid expression of an ideology-driven approach. Modernization theory captured all walks of life and tried to optimize breeding techniques, pasture utilization, transport and processing concepts. New insights into other aspects of pastoralism such as its role as an adaptive strategy to use marginal resources in remote locations with difficult access could only be understood as a critique of capitalist and communist concepts of modernization. In recent years a renaissance of modernization theory-led development activities can be observed. Higher inputs from external funding, fencing of pastures and settlement of pastoralists in new townships are the vivid expression of 'modern' pastoralism in urban contexts. The new modernization programme incorporates resettlement and transformation of lifestyles as to be justified by environmental pressure in order to reduce degradation in the age of climate change.
