Book Amtrak in the Heartland

Download or read book Amtrak in the Heartland written by Craig Sanders and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Craig Sanders has done an excellent job of research . . . his treatment is as comprehensive as anyone could reasonably wish for, and solidly based. In addition, he succeeds in making it all clear as well as any human can. He also manages to inject enough humor and human interest to keep the reader moving." —Herbert H. Harwood, author of The Lake Shore Electric Railway Story and Invisible Giants: The Empires of Cleveland's Van Sweringen Brothers A complete history of Amtrak operations in the heartland, this volume describes conditions that led to the passage of the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, the formation and implementation of Amtrak in 1970–71, and the major factors that have influenced Amtrak operations since its inception. More than 140 photographs and 3 maps bring to life the story as told by Sanders. This book will become indispensable to train enthusiasts through its examination of Americans' long-standing fascination with passenger trains. When it began in 1971, many expected Amtrak to last about three years before going out of existence for lack of business, but the public's continuing support of funding for Amtrak has enabled it and the passenger train to survive despite seemingly insurmountable odds.

Book excerpt: With a storm of hot lead he brought peace to the blood-drenched, lawless Ironhead Station, deep in the wilds of Indian Territory. Now Morgan Clyde, who fought criminals as a New York City policeman and Confederates as a Union soldier, has another war on his hands. WANTED DEAD AND BURIED The bloody barbarism of the Civil War scarred Morgan’s soul as well as his body. He sent so many soldiers to Hell and almost joined them when he was struck by a bullet from the sniper known as the Arkansas Traveler. The only man to ever survive the notorious Rebel’s sharpshooting skills, Morgan finds himself back in the assassin’s sights. But the ex-Confederate isn’t the only one gunning for Morgan. The outlaw Kingman brothers have followed him from Ironhead Station out onto the Salt Plains of the Arkansas River, seeking vengeance for their brother who Morgan killed in a gunfight. Then there’s the Pinkerton Detective agents, answerable to no law but their own, on a mission to execute him. And as his enemies close in, Morgan strikes with the speed of a rattlesnake, the ferocity of a grizzly, and the predatory instinct of a stalking wolf . . . Praise for Spur Award winner Brett Cogburn “Fans of frontier arcana will revel in Cogburn’s readable prose and lively characters.” —Publishers Weekly on Rooster

Book P S I Love You

Download or read book P S I Love You written by Carlton Jackson and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2007-03-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1953, the same year that Elvis Presley cut his first demo, Cash Box magazine named the Hilltoppers the top vocal group of the year. Hits such as "Trying" and "P.S. I Love You" raced up the charts and kept the group in Billboard's Top 40. The four fresh-faced singers appeared on The Toast of the Town with Ed Sullivan, who introduced them to the nation. On weekends the Hilltoppers performed in cities across the country, but on Monday mornings they were better known as Western Kentucky State College students Jimmy Sacca, Seymour Spiegelman, Don McGuire, and Billy Vaughn. The Korean War, military drafts, and changing public tastes in music, however, cut short singing careers that should have lasted much longer. Sacca was drafted in 1953, mere months before the end of the war. Vaughn left the group shortly after that for a career at Dot Records and found fame elsewhere with his orchestra. McGuire and Spiegelman were drafted as well, and despite a set of temporary replacement members, the group eventually called it quits. Fifty years later, historian Carlton Jackson revisits the Kentucky college kids who made it big between classes. He follows the group from their first hit, recorded in Western's Van Meter Auditorium, to their brief 1970s reunion. Their story recalls the nature of celebrity and youth in the early days of rock 'n' roll.

Book The Ghosts of Wheaton

Download or read book The Ghosts of Wheaton written by Thom Wilder and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Thorne, who coached the Tigers of Wheaton Warrenville South/Wheaton Central High School for 22 years once said, "Football is so much like life: you get knocked down, you suffer devastating losses, you make huge mistakes, but you have to get right back up. You have no choice." Thorne's Tigers followed that script for many years before emerging as one of Illinois' preeminent high school football programs in the 1990s ultimately producing more than 80 Division I college athletes, as well as nearly 90 Division II and Division III athletes and a handful of All-Americans and NFL players along the way – not to mention seven state championships. The Ghosts of Wheaton is the story of how champions are made. With play-by-play detail, author Thom Wilder chronicles not only the games but the players, their struggles, their strengths, and their leadership in their quest to rekindle the gridiron greatness of Red Grange.

Book excerpt: This volume is an extended case study of a hypothetical school district--its residential communities, a middle school and secondary school, its students, teachers, administrators, parents and board members. An integrated series of cases, all dealing with characters and situations within the school district, it offers a realistic picture of what teaching is really about. Case activities increase readers' awareness of the professional aspects of teaching, and provide opportunities for teacher reflection and decision making and for dealing with the consequences of teacher actions. Chapters 2-15 include "Questions for Reflection and Discussion," "Class and Individual Projects," and "Questions Based on Activities." Most chapters conclude with "Additional Teaching and Learning Skills" and "Suggestions For Further Reading."
