Book High School Course in Latin Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book High School Course in Latin Composition Classic Reprint written by Charles McCoy Baker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Course in Latin Composition The aim of this book is to provide a complete course in writing Latin for school use. The book consists of three parts arranged for practice in writing Latin during the last three years of school, and, in addition, a summary of the Elements of Syntax for reference. Treatment. - In the lessons syntax is treated systematically by topics. For content and vocabulary the exercises are based on Caesar's Commentaries and on the Orations of Cicero which are usually read in our schools. Summary of the Elements of Syntax. - The first portion of the book consists of a summary of the Elements of Syntax. This summary contains a statement and explanation of those principles of syntax which are essential for writing Latin in the school, so that in the lessons direct reference may be made to this summary instead of to the confusing mass of information given in the large grammars. References to the grammars are given, however, so that, if desired, they may be used instead of, or in addition to, those given in the summary. The illustrative examples are, for the most part, taken from Caesar or Cicero, that the student may the more easily interpret them. Part I. - Part I consists of a series of twenty-eight lessons based for content and vocabulary on Caesar's Commentaries, Books I - IV. Book Applied Latin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Latin: A Course for Beginners After an experience of several years teaching in College and High School, the author has become convinced that the present First Year books do not satisfy modern needs in the teaching of Latin nor do they handle the subject in a manner that produces the greatest good for the greatest number of students. I. The Beginners' books in present use have been written too much for the small number of students who intend to go to College, and too little for the great number who study Latin only during two or three years of High School work. Within the last few years the makers of High _school curricula have been forced to pay more attention to the demands of the great mass of students who go no further than the High School. Courses more nearly related to their needs in later life as citizens and workers have been adopted. Traditional courses which gained reputations as valuable only for College students have been disregarded by the authorities and neglected by the students. Latin, especially, has been attacked as an educational luxury, be cause laymen have thought that the net results of the study do not justify the outlay of so much valuable time. Too often no definite advance could be pointed out as the result of the first year's study even by the teachers. Book A First Latin Book for Junior High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Latin Book for Junior High Schools Classic Reprint written by Harry Fletcher Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Latin Book for Junior High Schools The development of the Junior High School has brought about a need for certain changes in the organization and methods of presentation of the subject matter of the high school course. Simpler forms of statement, more extended drill, and the elimination or postponement of some topics which have 'been included in the elementary work of the four year high school are necessary in order to meet the needs of younger pupils. Such changes are especially impor tant in the study of foreign languages because of the fact that less time has been given for training in English and for gaining familiarity with the general principles of grammatical usage. In the case of a great many pupils Latin is the first for eign language to be studied. It should, therefore, be made as fully as possible an introduction to the general laws of language. Furthermore it should be presented in such a way as to reenforce the pupil's knowledge of the essential facts regarding the structure and grammatical usages of his own language. Often the inflections of the Latin sentence ele ments serve to make clear syntactical relations which have been vague to the pupil in his study of English and which must be understood by him before an intelligent use of his own language or of a foreign language is possible. Book Teaching High School Latin

Download or read book Teaching High School Latin written by Josiah Bethea Game and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching High-School Latin: A Handbook This little book represents a revision and enlargement of the Handbook for high-school Teachers of Latin which was published as a bulletin of the Missouri State Normal School, Cape Girardeau, in 1907, while the writer was connected with that institution as professor of Latin and Greek. That bulletin had a surprising popularity. An edition of five thousand was distributed within a short time, mainly in response to requests from all parts of the country. Even after a lapse of more than eight years, calls for Copies are frequently received. An earnest effort has been made to prepare a practical manual that will meet some of the immediate needs of the young teacher of Latin. The plans proposed represent actual experience in the high school, the normal school, and the college. They have been tested thoroughly and found effective. They do not represent a final solution of all the problems of the young teacher, but they do represent the best contribution the writer can now make to the cause of better teaching in our schools. Some of the suggestions here given were made originally by Professor C. U. Clark, director of the American Acad emy, Rome, Italy. My obligation to him is very great. Professors G. J. Laing and F. J. Miller, of the University of Chicago, did me the kindness to read the manuscript and make suggestions which have added very much to the value of the book. Their help is fully appreciated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Latin Plays for High-School Students From all these and many other points it is reported that great interest is aroused among the students, pri marily in the fact and production of the play itself, but resulting also in a permanent interest in the more seri ous and regular work of the Latin class. The author of the plays presented in this book has herself already reaped rich rewards of her work in the continued zeal of her students for their Latin study after they have passed on to college. She writes that the boy who played Cicero in the wedding last year is now a freshman in an eastern college, and still finds Latin the work of his greatest interest and success; and the girl who was Tullia in the play is also a freshman in col lege, with zeal and courage enough to attempt the com position of Latin hymns. Download or read book The Case for Latin in Secondary Schools Classic Reprint written by J. W. Mackail and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Latin in Secondary Schools This pamphlet is meant to set out, briefly and simply, for the use not merely of those engaged in organising, carrying on, and improving the work of national education, but of ordinary people, and particularly of parents, the case for Latin in Secondary Schools; that is to say, in schools which, as defined by the Board of Education] offer a course of general education suitable for pupils of an age-range extending from 12 to 17 at least. Three points should first be stated, and must be borne in mind in order to make the scope of what follows clear: I. What is dealt with here is the case for Latin. The case for Greek is a different thing, and is not dealt with here: it would only confuse the issue. For the same reason, the substitution of Greek for Latin as a subject in the Secondary School course, an experiment which has been advocated in some quarters, and has here and there been tried, is not discussed. "The classics" in the ordinary use of the term mean Latin and Greek, and therefore that term will not be used at all except where it occurs in quotations.
