Book excerpt: In recent years many books have been published in the area of Christology (who is Jesus in himself?) and soteriology (what did he do as Saviour?). A number of notable, ecumenical documents on Christian ministry have also appeared. But in all this literature there is surprisingly little reflection on the priesthood of Christ, from which derives all ministry, whether the priesthood of all the faithful or ministerial priesthood. This present work aims to fill that gap by examining, in the light of the Scriptures and the Christian tradition, what it means to call Christ our priest. Beginning with a study of the biblical material, the book then moves to the witness to Christ's priesthood coming from the fathers of the Church, Thomas Aquinas, Luther and Calvin, the Council of Trent, the seventeenth-century 'French School', John Henry Newman, Tom Torrance and the Second Vatican Council. The two concluding chapters describe and define in twelve theses the key characteristics of Christ's priesthood and what sharing in that priesthood, through baptism and ordination, involves.

Book The Tabernacle The Priesthood and The Offerings

Download or read book The Tabernacle The Priesthood and The Offerings written by Henry W. Soltau and published by Solid Christian Books. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His teaching was remarkable, not only for its clearness and depth, but also for its close adherence to Scripture, thus proving how much he lived in communion with God. The great central truths of Salvation through the cross of Christ, and of the Second Coming of the Lord, were ever present to his mind, and pervaded all his teaching. Fearless in his denunciation of what he believed to be error; intensely solemn in his warnings of the power and the consequences of sin; an unflinching standard-bearer of the gospel of God's grace, and yet most tender in ministering the truth of God to stricken ones—he was the means of strengthening the hands of many a feeble one, and of preserving from the snares of the adversary many of God's people.

Book The Royal Priesthood and the Glory of God

Download or read book The Royal Priesthood and the Glory of God written by David Schrock and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Biblical Theology of the Royal Priesthood from Genesis to Revelation "You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." —1 Peter 2:9 From Genesis to Revelation, the theme of the royal priesthood is a silver thread running through the biblical story from the garden of Eden through the priesthood of Israel to Jesus Christ—the true and better priest. It culminates with the creation of God's covenant people, called out of the nations to be his priests to the nations. In this concise treatment, David Schrock traces this theme of priesthood throughout the Bible and displays to readers how Jesus, the great high priest, informs the worship, discipleship, and evangelism of the church. Short and Accessible: Traces the theme of priesthood from Genesis to Revelation and gives practical application for the church today Written for Laypeople and Church Leaders: Excellent for students, Bible studies, small groups, and leaders of all levels Part of the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series

This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the New Testament, the Epistle to the Hebrews is unique in designating Jesus as High Priest. The author of Hebrews gives a clear and definite teaching regarding the priesthood of Christ. That Jesus Christ is our High Priest belongs to the «main point of the things being said» (8,1). The use of the messianic oracle of Ps 110, 4 and its explanations are key to the teaching about how Christ became High Priest and the significance and meaning of Christ becoming High Priest/Priest according to the order of Melchizedek. This study is an attempt to explore Hebrews' teaching about the priesthood of Christ in Heb 5,1-7,28 and the role of Ps 110,4 in it. Heb 5,1-7,28 is an embedded discourse with its own internal organisation: with an introduction, paragraphs developing the theme and a conclusion.

Book Called to Be a Royal Priesthood

Download or read book Called to Be a Royal Priesthood written by John E. Huegel and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided in two parts. The first part is the story the Bible tells of God’s presence in the world beginning with creation and the rebellion of the first humans, followed by God’s project of restoration in the chosen people of Israel, its fulfillment in the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the final consummation at the end of time. The second part is an exposition of what the Bible teaches our response to the story should be. The author points out that the Holy Spirit reveals to us our union with Christ in his death and resurrection. This enables us then to practice the virtues that lead to holiness, which is the foundation of our vocation as kings and priests.

Book Jesus and the Old Testament Roots of the Priesthood

Download or read book Jesus and the Old Testament Roots of the Priesthood written by John Bergsma and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there anything in the New Testament about the need for priests in the Church? Many Protestants would argue no. And if you point out that there is a priesthood in the Old Testament, they are likely to say it was a feature of the Old Covenant that was undone by Christ. How should a Catholic respond? In Jesus and the Old Testament Roots of the Priesthood, biblical scholar John Bergsma convinces readers that Jesus did, in fact, intend for a ministerial priesthood to be a key feature of the New Covenant. Bergsma shows how the priesthood is a major thread holding together the biblical story line—beginning with Adam’s loss of the gift of priesthood in the Fall and the long process of restoring his descendants to a priestly status over the centuries, culminating with Christ. With chapter summaries and discussion questions included, Jesus and the Old Testament Roots of the Priesthood can readily be adapted into a four-part study for personal or small group use.
