Book Where Have All the Heroes Gone

Download or read book Where Have All the Heroes Gone written by Bruce Peabody and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the men and women associated with the American Revolution and Civil War to the seminal figures in the struggles for civil and women's rights, Americans have been fascinated with icons of great achievement, or at least reputation. But who spins today's narratives about American heroism, and to what end? In Where Have All the Heroes Gone?, Bruce Peabody and Krista Jenkins draw on the concept of the American hero to show an important gap between the views of political and media elites and the attitudes of the mass public. The authors contend that important changes over the past half century, including the increasing scope of new media and people's deepening political distrust, have drawn both politicians and producers of media content to the hero meme. However, popular reaction to this turn to heroism has been largely skeptical. As a result, the conversations and judgments of ordinary Americans, government officials, and media elites are often deeply divergent. Investigating the story of American heroes over the past five decades provides a narrative that can teach us about such issues as political socialization, institutional trust, and political communication.

Book Valor

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Lee Greenblatt
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2014-05-08
  • ISBN : 1589799534
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Valor written by Mark Lee Greenblatt and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valor features the thrilling stories that are the fruit of Mark Lee Greenblatt’s interviews with brave American servicemen from twenty-first-century wars. These soldiers, sailors, and Marines have risked their lives several times over for their country as well as for their fellow troops and civilians. Still, until now, their stories have largely gone unnoticed by the public, perhaps lost in the frenzied and often nasty debate surrounding those conflicts. As the author writes, “This generation does not have an Audie Murphy. I set out to change that with this book.” Detailing incredible and evocative feats—including an Army pilot who rescued two fellow pilots from a deadly crash in hostile territory and strapped himself to the helicopter’s exterior for the flight to the hospital—Greenblatt provides glimpses into the minds of these men as they face gut-wrenching decisions and overcome enormous odds. However, this book is much more than tales of riveting action. Each chapter goes beyond linear combat stories to explore each hero’s motivations, dreams, and the genuine emotions that were evoked in the face of extreme danger. Readers will be transported to a variety of settings—from close-quarters urban fighting in Iraq to mountainside ambushes in rural Afghanistan to a midnight rescue in the middle of the Atlantic—as they accompany the men who do not see themselves as heroes but as patriots in the line of duty.

Book Every Man a Hero

Download or read book Every Man a Hero written by Ray Lambert and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Army medic and Silver Star recipient shares a visceral firsthand account of D-Day in this acclaimed, New York Times bestselling WWII memoir. At five a.m. on June 6, 1944, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ray Lambert stood on the deck of a troopship off the coast of Normandy, France, awaiting the signal to board the landing craft that would take him and so many others to meet their fate on Omaha Beach. Spotting his brother Bill, who served beside him throughout the war, they exchanged promises to take care of their families if one of them didn’t make it. Less than five hours later, after saving dozens of lives and being wounded at least three separate times, Ray would lose consciousness in the shallow water of the beach under heavy fire. He would wake on the deck of a landing ship to find his battered brother clinging to life next to him. Every Man a Hero is the unforgettable story not only of what happened in the incredible and desperate hours on Omaha Beach, but of the bravery and courage that preceded them, throughout the Second World War—from the sands of Africa, through the treacherous mountain passes of Sicily, and beyond to the greatest military victory the world has ever known.

Book Martial Valor from Beowulf to Vietnam

Download or read book Martial Valor from Beowulf to Vietnam written by Alfredo Bonadeo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is true valor and how do grief, survival and battle fatigue affect soldiers? Literature and history show that valor's purpose is often less than daring, generous and noble. Through examples in literature and the impact of real combat, the author shows how it can change to personal pride, a badge of distinction, and a means to reputation; it has sparked fear of cowardice and generated degradation to overcome it; it has prodded soldiers to kill for killing's sake.

Book Classic Legendary Hero Stories

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is filled with myth. Heroes and icons from our distant past are no longer remembered by people who actually experienced them. They are remembered by the stories passed down from generation to generation. After so many centuries have passed, it is often difficult to discern who was truly alive, and who lived only in the minds of the storytellers. Fictional beings are no less capable than real-life heroes of teaching society a lesson, or exemplifying what the reader believes is right and just, or downright evil. Whether or not the characters in a story were ever alive is a decision each reader will have to make on their own. Regardless of when or where the characters may have lived, each story in this collection will share with the reader some moral lesson that applies to the world today. Classic Legendary Hero Stories includes characters from a variety of places and time periods, including: Gilgamesh; Young David (Goliath's foe); Odysseus; Beowulf; El Cid; Richard Lionheart; Robin Hood; King Arthur; and Rama the Indian Prince.
