Book The Herefordshire Chantry Valuations of 1547

Download or read book The Herefordshire Chantry Valuations of 1547 written by M A Faraday and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the later Middle Ages it was common for persons with property to endow chantries, chiefly for prayers to be said for the donor or members of his family for the indefinite future. From these endowments churches accumulated properties around the county, sometime in other counties. In the mid 1500s the properties were seized by the Crown and sold. Lists of properties, occupiers and purchasers were kept. The present volume covers Hereford Chantries. This record is of interest to scholars of the 16th century, particularly of the post-Reformation secularisation of Church property. In addition, family historians, once they have reached the mid-16th century from which period parish registers and collections of wills are very much more sparse, must of necessity look at any lists of residents in particular places and this is one.

Book Deeds of the Palmers Gild of Ludlow

Download or read book Deeds of the Palmers Gild of Ludlow written by M A Faraday and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These documents cover the 300 year history of the Palmer's Gild up to its dissolution in 1551. Some 1,495 deeds of various kinds, mostly in Latin, some in Norman-French or English are all shown in English. They demonstrate the extent of the Gild's interests and also provide the most important source of information about the families of the town and other places, their descents, the derivations of their names and their occupations. The Gild became the leading institution in Ludlow and it supported (a) an important chantry in the parish church, (b) a college of chaplains who provided many services, both spiritual and secular, (c) building and ornamentation work in the parish church and (d) provided a kind of mutual insurance service for its members who came from all over the country, including at one time Richard, duke of York himself. The gild acquired many properties from donations, bequests and purchases and the rents financed its activities. There is a comprehensive index. This is a paperback.

Download or read book Hereford Cathedral written by Gerarld Alymer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-07-07 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in its possession of a chained library and of the Mappa Mundi, Hereford Cathedral is remarkable for its architecture, its long history and its musical tradition. "Hereford Cathedral" is the definitive account of its history from Anglo-Saxon times to the present, and of its architecture, fittings, musical tradition, archives and library. Substantial parts of the structure date from Norman times, but the building has been modified in many ways over the years. In the middle ages Hereford was the centre of pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Thomas Cantilupe, bishop of Hereford (d.1282). It survived the Reformation relatively intact, but was damaged during the Civil War. Its west end collapsed disastrously in 1786, leading to the renewal and reworking of the exterior by James Wyatt. Little was changed in the interior until the striking Victorian rationalisation by George Gilbert Scott.

Book Commonwealth and the English Reformation

Download or read book Commonwealth and the English Reformation written by Ben Lowe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst much recent research has dealt with the popular response to the religious change ushered in during the mid-Tudor period, this book focuses not just on the response to broad liturgical and doctrinal change, but also looks at how theological and reform messages could be utilized among local leaders and civic elites. It is this cohort that has often been neglected in previous efforts to ascertain the often elusive position of the common woman or man. Using the Vale of Gloucester as a case study, the book refocuses attention onto the concept of "commonwealth" and links it to a gradual, but long-standing dissatisfaction with local religious houses. It shows how monasteries, endowed initially out of the charitable impulses of elites, increasingly came to depend on lay stewards to remain viable. During the economic downturn of the mid-Tudor period, when urban and landed elites refocused their attention on restoring the commonwealth which they believed had broken down, they increasingly viewed the charity offered by religious houses as insufficient to meet the local needs. In such a climate the Protestant social gospel seemed to provide a valid alternative to which many people gravitated. Holding to scrutiny the revisionist revolution of the past twenty years, the book reopens debate and challenges conventional thinking about the ways the traditional church lost influence in the late middle ages, positing the idea that the problems with the religious houses were not just the creation of the reformers but had rather a long history. In so doing it offers a more complete picture of reform that goes beyond head-counting by looking at the political relationships and how they were affected by religious ideas to bring about change.

  • Author : Alan Kreider
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

Download or read book English Chantries written by Alan Kreider and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chantries of medieval England were founded in the belief that intercessory masses shortened the period spent by souls in purgatory. They played a greater role in the daily life of sixteenth-century Englishmen than did monasteries, yet up to now the dissolution of the chantries has not been a popular subject of study. Alan Kreider rectifies this, establishing the importance of the chantries in the story of late medieval and Reformation England. He discusses their social and religious significance. He explains the role of purgatory in the founding of chantries and in the theological debates, popular preaching and political struggles unleashed by the Reformation that led to their confiscation. He explores the forces that led the governments of Henry VIII and Edward VI to jettison traditional practices, and he underlines the pain of state-fostered religious change. Book jacket.
