Download or read book Saul Benjamin and the Emergence of Monarchy in Israel written by Joachim J. Krause and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ponder questions of the united monarchy under Saul and David in light of current historical and archaeological evidence Reconstructing the emergence of the Israelite monarchy involves interpreting historical research, approaching questions of ancient state formation, synthesizing archaeological research from sites in the southern Levant, and reexamining the biblical traditions of the early monarchy embedded in the books of Samuel and Kings. Integrating these approaches allows for a nuanced and differentiated picture of one of the most crucial periods in the history of ancient Israel. Rather than attempting to harmonize archaeological data and biblical texts or to supplement the respective approach by integrating only a portion of data stemming from the other, both perspectives come into their own in this volume presenting the results of an interdisciplinary Tübingen–Tel Aviv Research Colloquium. Features: Essays on Israel's monarchy by experts in biblical archaeology and biblical studies Methods for integrating archaeology and biblical traditions in reconstructing ancient Israel's history New research on the sociopolitical process of state formation in Israel and Judah

Book A History of the Hebrew Monarchy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Hebrew Monarchy Classic Reprint written by Francis William Newman and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Hebrew Monarchy In this third edition I have omitted many controversial notes, which seem no longer needful. To avoid any mystery, and prevent future misconception, I will say plainly that I hold in my hands a letter from the late Editor of the North British Review, which fixes on the late Archbishop Whately the responsibility of a certain article, by which I was much aggrieved. But as it is not likely to be now read, I am glad to say no more about it. A few general remarks may assist the reader to understand the point of view from which the following pages were written. 1. I did not start from the assumption that "miracles are incredible;" but from the earlier axiom, that "the more strange the thing attested, the more cogent is the proof needed." Under the application of this very cautious principle, it is gradually discovered that the great majority of alleged miracles have really no better evidence than have ghosts, magic, and stories of fairies. In Hebrew history, as in that of Greeks and Romans, the miraculous element disappears in proportion as we obtain historical attestations: thus the belief is undermined by the growth of knowledge and of criticism. - Others may now start from a more advanced principle; that "after the researches of the last 100 years we have a right to presume mistake in every pretended miracle."
