Book Outback to Asia

Download or read book Outback to Asia written by Stuart Dick and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outback to Asia is the true story of a Vietnam war dissenter (the author) who left a career and home in America in 1972 in search of the truth about communism and Vietnam. The ¡rtrip¡_ begins with lofty ideals and fervent convictions but those values melt in the face of obstacles, temptations, and adventures along the way traversing three continents. The mission to reach the killing fields of Asia leads the author into the depths of dysentery in Mexico, the enchantment of lovely ladies on the Great Barrier Island of New Zealand and the perils of crossing the Outback of Australia in a 1951 Rover touring sedan. Broken and discouraged the author finds hope stranded on an Aboriginal settlement and purpose in a providential meeting in Adelaide, Australia. These adventures set the table for a new level of providential confrontations manifest in the killing fields of Asia in Laos and Bangladesh and the spiritual dominions of Buddhism, Hinduism and Lamaism. The ultimate contest awaits the homecoming prodigal/pilgrim when he is forced to contend with his own spiritual heritage as an American.

Download or read book Outback Nevada written by John M Glionna and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join author John M. Glionna on a journey to discover the real Nevada, a place inhabited by diverse, spirited, and sometimes quirky people who make up the fabric of the Silver State. Outback Nevada explores the far-flung corners of the seventh-largest state in the nation and introduces its readers to the humanity, courage, strength, and charm of these little-known Americans. Each story is part of the vast collection of published articles Glionna has written during his decades of work as a journalist for the Los Angeles Times and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Glionna’s interest in Nevada’s rugged, isolated landscape and the people who choose to live in this often-harsh environment was born of his own wanderings into the “outback.” Through his stories, he shares intimate portraits of rural and small-town lifestyles not many understand. Readers meet men with names like Flash and Mr. Cool; will listen to a cowboy minister preach the word of God to his parishioners; will walk with an antiques dealer from Genoa as he hunts for denim in Nevada’s abandoned nineteenth-century mine shafts; and will learn from an ex-paramedic– turned–coffee-shop–owner who provides Boulder City with a true sense of community. Full of humor, eccentricities, and compassion, these stories reveal the state’s true nature and extend an invitation to get lost “somewhere out there” in the real Nevada.

Book Outback and Out West

Download or read book Outback and Out West written by Tom Lynch and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outback and Out West examines the ecological consequences of a settler-colonial imaginary by comparing expressions of settler colonialism in the literature of the American West and Australian Outback. Tom Lynch traces exogenous domination in both regions, which resulted in many similar means of settlement, including pastoralism, homestead acts, afforestation efforts, and bioregional efforts at “belonging.” Lynch pairs the two nations’ texts to show how an analysis at the intersection of ecocriticism and settler colonialism requires a new canon that is responsive to the social, cultural, and ecological difficulties created by settlement in the West and Outback. Outback and Out West draws out the regional Anthropocene dimensions of settler colonialism, considering such pressing environmental problems as habitat loss, groundwater depletion, and mass extinctions. Lynch studies the implications of our settlement heritage on history, art, and the environment through the cross-national comparison of spaces. He asserts that bringing an ecocritical awareness to settler-colonial theory is essential for reconciliation with dispossessed Indigenous populations as well as reparations for ecological damages as we work to decolonize engagement with and literature about these places.

Book Dark Pool of Light Volume Three

Download or read book Dark Pool of Light Volume Three written by Richard Grossinger and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In books like Embyogenesis and Embryos, Galaxies, and Sentient Beings, author Richard Grossinger brought together the subjects of biological embryology and the esoteric process of human consciousness becoming embodied ("The embryo is the universe writing itself on its own body"). In Dark Pool of Light, his three-volume series of books discussing the nature of reality and consciousness, Grossinger weaves neuroscience-based behaviorism and the phenomenology of "being" and reality together with psychological and psychospiritual views of "that single thing which is most difficult to understand or vindicate: our own existence." In 2008, Grossinger began studying with noted psychic teacher John Friedlander, who helped him refine his vision of cerebral and somatic awareness to still-subtler levels. "Dark Pool of Light began unnamed in the journals of my psychic work with John Friedlander," says Grossinger, "not so much a record of actual practices as insights from them and extensions out of them." This expansive inquiry into the nature of consciousness ends with this third volume in the series, The Crisis and Future of Consciousness. Grossinger addresses the perennial question of evil and shares the author's hopes and fears for the future of humanity. While wisdom gleaned from such seemingly disparate sources as science, philosophy, religion, and spirituality might appear "very, very different things," Grossinger nevertheless finds their meeting place in subjective, lived experience.
