The first half of this book clearly indicates that she has been on the hospice path a very long time. The second half of the book contains her first blogs. She started writing a blog hoping to educate and inspire anyone who sits at the bedside caring for another as they near the end of their life. She shares her tools and lessons hoping to remove any fear you might have and inspire you to be fully present for someone else. Her heart is a kind and gentle heart and you will see this as you read her words.

She makes it clear that choosing hospice creates the best possible world for the dying and the people who love themthat terminal illness does not necessitate living every day as though it is your last. Rather hospice can create a world of possibilities for each and every day that is left to usjust like in real life. Book The Production of Hospice Space

Download or read book The Production of Hospice Space written by Sarah McGann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the widely held notion of a hospice as a building or a place, this book argues that it should instead be a philosophy of care. It proposes that the positive and negative impact that space can have in the pursuit of an ideal such as hospice care has previously been underestimated. Whether it be a purpose-built hospice, part of a hospital, a nursing home or within the home, a hospice is anchored by space and spatial practices, and these spatial practices are critical for a holistic approach to dying with dignity. Such spatial practices are understood as part of a broad architectural, social, conceptual and theoretical process. By linking health, social and architectural theory and establishing conceptual principles, this book defines 'hospice' as a philosophy that is underpinned by space and spatial practice. In putting forward the notion of 'hospice space', removed from the bounds of a specific building type, it suggests that hospice philosophy could and should be available within any setting of choice where the spatial practices support that philosophy, be it home, nursing home, hospice or 'hospice-friendly-hospitals'.

Book excerpt: If you are afraid of dying and do not want to know the truth, this may not be the book for you.If on the other hand you want a true insider's look at healthcare and the ways people suffer and are killed at the hands of others, then read on.Hospice has a lollipop and candy cane image, that could not be further from the truth. It is a hard core business of 'dealing' with the most susceptible in our society, the dying. Hospice would like us to believe that they are here to provide our loved ones with the care and attention they need in their final months, weeks and days. And although that may have been the noble start of this service, they have become like any modern business of putting profits first. They make money from you dying and when that is no longer profitable, they neatly dispose of you through various means. And when employees speak up, they are disposed of as well. You will read first-hand accounts of patients that have fallen into healthcare traps. The treatments, that the patients were provided, not for their benefit, but to enrich a company, will shock you. Their misfortune can help you, or a loved one, avoid the same fate. But, you need to know what questions to ask, what your rights are, and what the healthcare provider is required to do. You need to have your eyes fully open. It may all sound like cloak and dagger, but with hospice it happens out in the open and right in front of you. They really do have a license to kill. Will you or your loved one be their next victim?

Download or read book The Hospice Doctor s Widow written by Jennifer O'Brien and published by Et Alia Press. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone facing death--their own or a loved one's--benefits from this love story and practical guide in one. As a hospice doctor, Bob cared daily for dying patients. At home, his wife, Jen, listened to the stories of patients and families, layering her understanding of death with the early losses of her own brother and mother. Then, the man who had spent a 40-year career caregiving was diagnosed with advanced, metastatic cancer. An insightful blend of art and compassion, patience and endearing honesty, this book comprises Jen's digital art journal, which chronicles this time in their marriage. What began as a visceral, self-care compulsion within days of diagnosis became notes, collages, and images revealing the raw, luminescent reflections of a caregiver-turned-widow. Beyond the practical guidance and solace offered by an insider, Jen's journal reminds us how to live presently during our darkest hours, honor grief, and discover--even after devastating loss--ways to forge forward.
