Book The Heart An Elegant Pump

Download or read book The Heart An Elegant Pump written by Desmond John Sheridan and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our hearts have evolved to be extremely efficient, long-lasting pumps that exquisitely match the needs of our bodies. This book is about how the heart does this; how can a heart pump the blood for up to one hundred years while the best formula one racing engine has a working life measured in hours? Why is the heart so efficient, and how are worn out parts replaced while working? How does it generate the force to act as a pump, how is it controlled electrically, and how can it repair itself? This book addresses these questions from physiological and molecular perspectives in language that aims to be accessible to all interested in biology and with liberal illustrations. The story of how the heart works is presented in the context of its origins; How is the heart formed in the womb? How it evolved as an oxygen pump through many configurations following the onset of oxygenic photosynthesis 2.5 billion years ago? Why its intimate co-evolution with the circulation and blood was essential to enable its efficiency and longevity? The book begins with a discussion of why the word heart is universally used as a metaphor for reason and emotion and traces its origins in modern and ancient languages. The last chapter explains why most diseases of the heart can be attributed to a divergence between the lifestyle for which the heart is optimally evolved, and those lived today in high-income nations and increasingly in middle and lower-income nations. Advice on how to preserve the heart is presented in light of this."--

Book The Secret Teachings of Plants

Download or read book The Secret Teachings of Plants written by Stephen Harrod Buhner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-10-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals the use of direct perception in understanding Nature, medicinal plants, and the healing of human disease • Explores the techniques used by indigenous and Western peoples to learn directly from the plants themselves, including those of Henry David Thoreau, Goethe, and Masanobu Fukuoka, author of The One Straw Revolution • Contains leading-edge information on the heart as an organ of perception All ancient and indigenous peoples insisted their knowledge of plant medicines came from the plants themselves and not through trial-and-error experimentation. Less well known is that many Western peoples made this same assertion. There are, in fact, two modes of cognition available to all human beings--the brain-based linear and the heart-based holistic. The heart-centered mode of perception can be exceptionally accurate and detailed in its information gathering capacities if, as indigenous and ancient peoples asserted, the heart’s ability as an organ of perception is developed. Author Stephen Harrod Buhner explores this second mode of perception in great detail through the work of numerous remarkable people, from Luther Burbank, who cultivated the majority of food plants we now take for granted, to the great German poet and scientist Goethe and his studies of the metamorphosis of plants. Buhner explores the commonalities among these individuals in their approach to learning from the plant world and outlines the specific steps involved. Readers will gain the tools necessary to gather information directly from the heart of Nature, to directly learn the medicinal uses of plants, to engage in diagnosis of disease, and to understand the soul-making process that such deep connection with the world engenders.

Book Heart Perfusion Energetics and Ischemia

Download or read book Heart Perfusion Energetics and Ischemia written by Leopold Dintenfass and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal purpose of a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Advanced Research Workshop, a part of the NATO Advanced Study Institutes Programme, is to: (a) exchange thoughts at the frontiers of knowledge or at the frontiers of two (or more) fields or sectors; (b) review and assess the state of the art; (c) formulate recommendations for future research directions; (d) formulate plans for large international scientific experiments. The aim of the ARW on "Microvascular, rheological, metabolic and heat-transfer aspects of the heart: relation to ischaemia and thrombosis", convened in Chateau de Bonas, July 4-11, 1982, was to describe functions and performance of the heart in an interdisciplin ary effort, involving cardiologists, pathologists, biochemists, haemorheologists, physiologists, pharmacologists and bioengineers; to explore interactions between such subfields as blood rheology, micro circulation and ischaemia of the myocardium, heat transfer, heat work and performance as a pump, effect of -metabolites and ion transfer, mechanism of sudden death, protein synthesis and protein molecular transformations. One of the purposes of the Convenor was to relate clinical haemorheology to the heart energetics and heart metabolism. This was only partly established, as difficulties of communications between different fields, difficulties of semantics and of specialized out looks could not be overcome within a -few days. Nevertheless, a gate was opened for communications interchange in the future. There was even a problem within each specialty, and as is rather common, quite diverse views have been expressed. This, of course, is quite normal in the progress of science.

Download or read book The Book of the Heart written by Eric Jager and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's increasingly electronic world, we say our personality traits are "hard-wired" and we "replay" our memories. But we use a different metaphor when we speak of someone "reading" another's mind or a desire to "turn over a new leaf"—these phrases refer to the "book of the self," an idea that dates from the beginnings of Western culture. Eric Jager traces the history and psychology of the self-as-text concept from antiquity to the modern day. He focuses especially on the Middle Ages, when the metaphor of a "book of the heart" modeled on the manuscript codex attained its most vivid expressions in literature and art. For instance, medieval saints' legends tell of martyrs whose hearts recorded divine inscriptions; lyrics and romances feature lovers whose hearts are inscribed with their passion; paintings depict hearts as books; and medieval scribes even produced manuscript codices shaped like hearts. "The Book of the Heart provides a fresh perspective on the influence of the book as artifact on our language and culture. Reading this book broadens our appreciation of the relationship between things and ideas."—Henry Petroski, author of The Book on the Bookshelf
