Book The Ferrum Timber Company for the United States of America

Download or read book The Ferrum Timber Company for the United States of America written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ferrum Timber Company for the United States of America: Organized for the Preservation of Timber From Decay and From the Ravages of the Marine Worm Hamar asserts that not only will his process preserve timber from decay for fifteen to twenty five years, or for an indefinite period, but will increase the strength and hardness of the timber to such a degree as will actually obliterate the difference of durability between the hard and the soft woods. As proof of this he refers to the sleepers of the Austrian and Hungarian railways, of soft wood prepared by his process more than ten years ago, which have answered every requirement and withstood every test as well as, Oak or any other kind of hard wood might have done. For the preservation of wood from rottenness it is first of all necessary to change its component parts by expelling those that are detrimental and substituting preservatives in their stead. Woody fibre itself will resist putrefaction for a considerable length of time, but the sap is the substance which sooner or later generates rottenness. Hamar's process first expels the sap completely, and next replaces it by the Chemical Compound for preservation. The expulsion of the sap, and the introduction of the chemicals, is produced by a simple and inexpensive appliance of hydrostatic and atmospheric pressure, which acts almost instantaneously throughout the pores of the whole timber subjected to the process. The chemicals vary according to circumstances and the different kinds of timber to be preserved. For a more complete understanding of the mode of preparing timber by this and other processes, some knowledge of the composition and manner of growth of wood, becomes important. Book Hand Book of Timber Preservation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hand Book of Timber Preservation Classic Reprint written by Samuel M. Rowe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand Book of Timber Preservation It is not pretended that the operator can take the matter up from the book and proceed at once to runthe business, as there is too much that calls for a trained and matured judgment; but the book will be of much service as a hand book and guide during the operation of the plant as well as to hints during the construction. The author is but too sensible of the imperfect arrangement of the work and that much is yet to do to make it complete, but trusts to be able to offer in the near future an edition that will correct, to some extent, the imperfections of this. In conclusion, we cannot do better than quote from remarks made by Henry Goldmark, M. Am. Soc. C. E.: The whole question of timber preservation is, after all, one of economy. The point is not whether the ordinary or an improved creosote process is the best thing, but whether something else much cheaper will not, at least for railroad ties, serve a useful pur pose. This we think is no longer a question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Culture and Imperialism

Download or read book Culture and Imperialism written by Edward W. Said and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark work from the author of Orientalism that explores the long-overlooked connections between the Western imperial endeavor and the culture that both reflected and reinforced it. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as the Western powers built empires that stretched from Australia to the West Indies, Western artists created masterpieces ranging from Mansfield Park to Heart of Darkness and Aida. Yet most cultural critics continue to see these phenomena as separate. Edward Said looks at these works alongside those of such writers as W. B. Yeats, Chinua Achebe, and Salman Rushdie to show how subject peoples produced their own vigorous cultures of opposition and resistance. Vast in scope and stunning in its erudition, Culture and Imperialism reopens the dialogue between literature and the life of its time.

If there is nothing to cook in the pot, there is no peace. - Oscar, a 57-year-old man, El Gorri n, Colombia They want to construct their houses near the road, and they cannot do that if they do not have peace with their enemies. So peace and the road have developed a symbiotic relation. One cannot live without the other. . . . - A community leader from a conflict-affected community on the island of Mindanao, Philippines Most conflict studies focus on the national level, but this volume focuses on the community level. It explores how communities experience and recover from violent conflict, and the surprising opportunities that can emerge for poor people to move out of poverty in these harsh contexts. 'Rising from the Ashes of Conflict' reveals how poor people s mobility is shaped by local democracy, people s associations, aid strategies, and the local economic environment in over 100 communities in seven conflict-affected countries, including Afghanistan. The findings suggest the need to rethink postconflict development assistance. This is the fourth volume in a series derived from the Moving Out of Poverty study, which explores mobility from the perspectives of poor people in more than 500 communities across 15 countries.

Download or read book The Marriage Builder written by Larry Crabb and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author Larry Crabb cuts to the heart of the biblical view of marriage: the "one-flesh" relationship. He argues convincingly that the deepest needs of human personality--security and significance--ultimately cannot be satisfied by a marriage partner. We need to turn to the Lord, rather than our spouse, to satisfy our needs. This frees both partners for "soul oneness," a commitment to minister to our spouse's needs rather than manipulating them to meet our own needs. With "soul oneness" comes renewed "body oneness," where couples enjoy sexual pleasure as an expression and outgrowth of a personal relationship. The Marriage Builder also identifies three building blocks essential to constructing marriage: the grace of God, true marriage commitment, and acceptance of one's mate. Discussion questions are included to aid couples who want to dig into it and apply the principles to their own lives and marriages. The Marriage Builder is for anyone who longs to transform marriage from trial to triumph.
