Book The Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin

Download or read book The Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin written by Kenneth S. Norris and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-08-30 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years in the making by a distinguished dolphin expert and his associates, The Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin is the first comprehensive scientific natural history of a dolphin species ever written. From their research camp at Kealakeakua Bay in Hawaii, these scientists followed a population of wild spinner dolphins by radiotracking their movements and, with the use of a windowed underwater vessel, observing the details of their underwater social life. The authors begin with a description of the spinner dolphin species, its morphology and systematics, and then examine the ocean environment, the organization of dolphin populations, and the way this school-based society of mammals uses shorelines for rest and instruction of the young. The dolphins' reproductive cycle, their vision, vocalization, hearing, breathing, and feeding, and the integration of the school are carefully analyzed. The authors conclude with a comprehensive evolutionary analysis of this marine cultural system, with its behavioral flexibility and high levels of cooperation. This absorbing book is the richest source available of new scientific insights about the lives of wild dophins and how their societies evolved at sea.

Book Behavior of the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin Stenella Longirostris Schlegel 1841

Download or read book Behavior of the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin Stenella Longirostris Schlegel 1841 written by Kenneth S. Norris and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hawaiian spinner dolphin, Stenella longirostris, was recorded from Kure Atoll to the island of Hawaii. It enters atoll lagoons or specific coves or swims over shallow sandy areas, usually near deep water, to rest. Access to nighttime feeding grounds may regulate the location of these rest areas. Rest areas are generally 50 m or less in depth. Natural scars and marks allowed study of movements and school structure. Schools are fluid assemblages of variable size and composition. Only small subgroups within schools may have long term integrity. Spinner dolphin exhibit several aerial patterns, including spinning which is mostly associated with sound production upon reentry, and each is typical of a specific school activity level. Sounds may serve as omndirectional sound sources maintaining school cohesion beyond the limits of vision. The daily cycle of spinner dolphins consists of nighttime feeding, morning approach to shore, morning - midday rest, and travel to feeding grounds near dusk. Feeding is upon scattering layer fishes, squid and shrimp. Dolphins very commonly show scars from large sharks and from the small shark Isistius, which scoops disc-shaped pieces of blubber from them. These wounds heal to form dollar-shaped scars. (Author).

Book The Lives of Hawai i s Dolphins and Whales

Download or read book The Lives of Hawai i s Dolphins and Whales written by Robin W. Baird and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean currents, winds, and rainfall all work together to create a marine oasis around the Hawaiian Islands, providing a home for many species of dolphins and whales normally found in the deep oceans of the world. The Lives of Hawai`i’s Dolphins and Whales opens a window into the world of these mysterious creatures with stories and observations from author Robin W. Baird’s work over the last seventeen years. The book includes exceptional full-color photographs of each species, life history descriptions, conservation threats, and maps showing sighting locations and movements of tagged individuals among the islands and offshore. While the well-known resident spinner dolphins and visiting humpback whales are covered, the ten species of lesser-known open-ocean dolphins and whales that are resident to the marine slopes of the islands are highlighted as well. Among these are endangered false killer whales, deep-diving Cuvier’s and Blainville’s beaked whales, abundant spotted dolphins, coastal bottlenose dolphins, cryptic dwarf sperm whales, family units of short-finned pilot whales, and social melon-headed whales. Baird also describes thirteen species of dolphins and whales that are found in offshore waters or are seasonal or occasional visitors to Hawaiian waters, including killer whales, the iconic sperm whale, and even blue whales and North Pacific right whales. More is known about the social organization and natural history of many of these marine mammals in Hawai`i than anywhere else in the world. For all of the species discussed, Baird presents data obtained from long-term photo-identification studies, with distinctive individuals tracked through time and space; for many of them, he includes findings from studies using genetics and satellite tagging. He also provides information on predators and prey, social organization, diving, and night-time behavior, along with suggestions on how to tell some of the more difficult to identify species apart. The book closes by focusing on conservation issues, both success stories and challenges, engaging readers to consider ways to protect Hawai`i’s unique assemblage of resident dolphins and whales.

Book New Island associated Stocks for Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins Stenella Longirostris Longirostris

Download or read book New Island associated Stocks for Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins Stenella Longirostris Longirostris written by Marie C. Hill and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The current Marine Mammal Protection Act stock assessment report for spinner dolphins within U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) waters of the central and western Pacific Ocean defines only a single stock, which includes the spinner dolphins within the waters of the Hawaiian Archipelago (Carretta et al., 2009) (Fi g. 1). Recent analyses of photo-identification and genetic data indicate the need for a redefinition of the Hawaiian stock of spinner dolphins, as well as the creation of a new stock to include those animals within the U.S. EEZ waters of American Samoa (Fig. 2)"--Introduction.
