Book Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Download or read book Franklin Delano Roosevelt written by Roy Jenkins and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterly work by the New York Times bestselling author of Churchill and Gladstone A protean figure and a man of massive achievement, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the only man to be elected to the presidency more than twice. In a ranking of chief executives, no more than three of his predecessors could truly be placed in contention with his standing, and of his successors, there are so far none. In acute, stylish prose, Roy Jenkins tackles all of the nuances and intricacies of FDR's character. He was a skilled politician with astounding flexibility; he oversaw an incomparable mobilization of American industrial and military effort; and, all the while, he aroused great loyalty and dazzled those around him with his personal charm. Despite several setbacks and one apparent catastrophe, his life was buoyed by the influence of Eleanor, who was not only a wife but an adviser and one of the twentieth century's greatest political reformers. Nearly complete before Jenkins's death in January 2003, this volume was finished by historian Richard Neustadt.

Book The Wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt

Download or read book The Wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt written by Donald Wigal and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men and women who shaped our world—in their own words. The Wisdom Library invites you on a journey through the lives and works of the world’s greatest thinkers and leaders. Compiled by scholars, this series presents excerpts from the most important and revealing writings of the most remarkable minds of all time. THE WISDOM OF ELEANOR ROOSEVELT “We must join in an effort to use all knowledge for the good of all human beings. When we do that we shall have nothing to fear.” John F. Kennedy described Eleanor Roosevelt as “one of the great ladies in the history of this country.” A role model for generations of women, Mrs. Roosevelt made an indelible mark as First Lady. Although painfully shy, she never hesitated to publicly champion the poor, minorities, women and other victims of discrimination. She was among the twentieth century’s most active civil rights pioneers, compelling her husband to sign a series of Executive Orders barring discrimination in the administration of various New Deal projects, and supporting desegregation of the armed forces. Her groundbreaking column, “My Day,” ran in national newspapers for twenty-six years. During her tenure as U.S. delegate to the United Nations, she was the principal author of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She also maintained close friendships and correspondences with notable statespeople, including her husband’s successor, Harry S. Truman, who declared her “First Lady of the World.” With revealing excerpts from her letters and published work, The Wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt delves into the passions and concerns that drove this exceptional humanitarian. Here is a fascinating and essential tribute to a woman ahead of her time, whose actions truly conveyed her words, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Book America s Fiscal Constitution

Download or read book America s Fiscal Constitution written by Bill White and published by Public Affairs. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Lincoln, the Roosevelts, Truman, and Eisenhower have done about today’s federal debt crisis? America’s Fiscal Constitution tells the remarkable story of fiscal heroes who imposed clear limits on the use of federal debt, limits that for two centuries were part of an unwritten constitution. Those national leaders borrowed only for extraordinary purposes and relied on well-defined budget practices to balance federal spending and revenues. That traditional fiscal constitution collapsed in 2001. Afterward—for the first time in history—federal elected officials cut taxes during war, funded permanent new programs entirely with debt, grew dependent on foreign creditors, and claimed that the economy could not thrive without routine federal borrowing. For most of the nation’s history, conservatives fought to restrain the growth of government by insisting that new programs be paid for with taxation, while progressives sought to preserve opportunities for people on the way up by balancing budgets. Virtually all mainstream politicians recognized that excessive debt could jeopardize private investment and national independence. With original scholarship and the benefit of experience in finance and public service, Bill White dispels common budget myths and distills practical lessons from the nation’s five previous spikes in debt. America’s Fiscal Constitution offers an objective and hopeful guide for people trying to make sense of the nation’s current, most severe, debt crisis and its impact on their lives and our future.

This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, University of Rostock, language: English, abstract: Between World War I and World War II the USA experienced a mixed development of their economy. On the one hand there was the economic prosperity in the 1920s and the epoch of reconstruction after 1933, as well known as the "New Deal." But also very important to consider is the economic crisis, called the "Great Depression" between 1929 and 1935. At the end of the 1920's, there was an increase in prosperity in the United States. Especially this period was shaped by Jazz music, sports and technical breakthroughs. Also many Americans made money investments in stocks, and after the value of stocks rose steadily, a lot more people could afford the standard of good living, which contained to drive brand new and expensive cars and to attend movie theaters and sumptuous clubs. When on Thursday, October 24, and on Tuesday, October 29 in 1929, the Wall Street stock market in New York collapsed, the "Roaring Twenties" were suddenly over within one week. Those two days are also called "Black Thursday" and "Black Tuesday".
