Book Rediscovering French Science Fiction in Literature Film and Comics

Download or read book Rediscovering French Science Fiction in Literature Film and Comics written by Philippe Mather and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French science-fiction (SF) is as old as the French language. Cyrano de Bergerac wrote about a trip to the moon that was published back in 1657, as did Jules Verne in 1865, this time using hard, scientific facts. The first movie showing a trip to the moon was made by Georges Méliès in 1902. In the comics’ format, Hergé had Tintin walk on the moon in 1954, 15 years before Neil Armstrong. These are just a few of the many unique French contributions to SF that rightly deserve to be better known. One of the purposes of this collection is to introduce French SF to an English-speaking audience. Rediscovering French Science Fiction... first revisits proto science-fiction from authors like Cyrano de Bergerac and Jules Verne, before delving into contemporary science-fiction works from authors such as René Barjavel and Jacques Spitz. A contribution from preeminent SF author Élisabeth Vonarburg, from Québec, helps to understand the constraints and advantages of writing SF in French. A third section is devoted to French SF in movies and graphic novels, media where French creators have been recognized worldwide. This collection explores many aspects of French SF, including the genre’s deep roots in popular culture, the influence of key authors on its historical development, and the form and function of science and fantasy, as well as the impact of films and graphic novels on the public perception of the genre’s nature.

Book excerpt: "The Federation considered itself a technological Utopia--and the planets under its sway were guaranteed stability by the power of the time-change teams. For whenever there was evidence that a new-found world might evolve into a menace, a team of seven were sent to tamper with that world's past history. But the seven that went to Ygone encountered a fate no theorist had projected. They met with immediate ambush; they found a culture that could not be fathomed, and they were finally confronted with all the contradictions that the system of time-tampering implied."--Back cover.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID: JOHN CLUTE (Encyclopedia of Fantasy, Science Fiction Encyclopedia) "I just now (finally) gotten my copy of French Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and Pulp Fiction and am immediately finding it enthralling." LOCUS "The most enlightening reference book of the year..." INTERZONE " It is a wonderful window into a world lost to us ignorant monolinguists. The book is well illustrated... It's certainly a book I shall refer to on many occasions. I think the Lofficiers have done a remarkable and laudable job." STARLOG "There is simply, no book like this one. Highly recommended." VIDEO WATCHDOG "...the instant I saw it, I knew that it was going to fill a major void in my library. I've just spent the last hour perusing it with admiration... It's not really a critical book, but rather an awe-inspiring survey of the history of French fantastique in all its forms... I've been saying for years, even though the French were responsible for starting it all, that there really has been no French tradition of the fantastic, but the completeness of this book is going to make me eat my words." FOUNDATION "...A truly epic enterprise... The information it contains abundantly justifies its inclusion on every reference shelf dedicated to imaginative fiction... A powerful instrument of understanding, which will hopefully become an invaluable guide to future research." UTOPIAN STUDIES "I can say, honestly, that I stand in awe of the labor and erudition that went into this book. It is in the same league as the Clute/Nicholls Encyclopedia, and all the more astonishing in the fact that it is the work of two people, not of multiple hands. It is an invaluable tool for any future research in this fascinating area of French culture... I salute the energy, intelligence and effort that went into producing this work, and can only wish more scholars would follow this example." SCIENCE FICTION STUDIES "The publication of this massive 'guide' must, by any standard, be viewed as a significant event: it is the first heroic attempt to provide, in English, a comprehensive overview of the history of Francophone speculative fiction... CLASSIC IMAGES "French Science Fiction [...] is quite unique and quite incredible in its size... The authors apparently received the Inkpot Award for Outstanding Achievements in Comic Arts. I have no idea what this award is, but based on this present offering, it was well deserved." COLLEGE & RESEARCH LIBRARIES NEWS "... fills in a long-neglected bibliographic gap in the study of French-language science fiction and fantasy literature, a genre with venerable roots and innumerable branches. The authors have covered all the bases in enormous detail." A.R.B.A. "...A wealth of information... It is to the authors' credit that they have made this material more accessible to an English-speaking public. French Science Fiction... will find its place... in the library of enthusiasts who have had a long love affair with science fiction and the fantastique, to whom it is heartily recommended." QUADRANT "This huge and comprehensive book is an extraordinary achievement that deserves to be well known... It is the ultimate sourcebook for anyone wishing to extend their knowledge, deepen it or be introduced -- the authors do not assume prior knowledge, but write their chapters in an interesting and intelligent way. FILM REVIEW "A stupendous achievement..."

Book Contemporary French and Francophone Futuristic Novels

Download or read book Contemporary French and Francophone Futuristic Novels written by Emmanuel Buzay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds a new light on the metafictional aspects of futuristic and science fiction novels, at the crossroads of information and media studies, possible worlds theories applied to cognitive narratology, questions related to the criticism of post-humanity, and, more broadly, contemporary French and Francophone literature. It examines the fictional minds of characters and their conceptions of resistance to the anticipated worlds they inhabit, particularly in novels by Pierre Bordage, Marie Darrieussecq, Michel Houellebecq, Amin Maalouf, Jean-Christophe Rufin, Antoine Volodine, and Élisabeth Vonarburg. It also explores how corporal postures serve as a matrix for philosophical quests in novels by Amélie Nothomb, Alain Damasio, and Romain Lucazeau. More specifically, from the fictional readers’ points of view, it provides a critical approach to the mythologies of writing, in the wake of the French philosophical tales by authors including Cyrano de Bergerac and Voltaire, to question the traditionally expressed formulations of the mythologies of writing, that is, of the metaphors of the book (the book of life, nature, and the world), to rethink the idea of a humanity within its limits.

Each chapter provides up-to-date historical and bibliographic information that will enable the reader to pursue subjects of particular interest. Book Science Fiction in Translation

Download or read book Science Fiction in Translation written by Ian Campbell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science Fiction in Translation: Perspectives on the Global Theory and Practice of Translation focuses on the process of translation and its implications. The volume explores the translation of works of science fiction (SF) from one language to another and the translation of SF tropes, terms, and ideas of SF theory into cultures outside the West. Providing a comprehensive examination of the state of translation into English, the essays consider how representative the body of translated work of SF is from the source language/culture. It also considers the social, political, and economic choices in selecting a work to translate. The book illustrates the dramatic growth both in SF production outside the Anglosphere, the translation of works from other languages into English, and the practice of translating English-language SF into other languages. Altogether, the essays map the theory, practice, and business of SF translation around the world.
