Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... a vitally new understanding that takes us from the terms of the representation of sexual difference to an anatomy of female subjectivity which will be widely influential." -- Stephen Heath "An original work likely to have significant impact on all those with an interest in the vibrant intersection of feminism, film theory, and psychoanalysis... " -- Naomi Schor "... powerfully argued study... impressive... " -- Choice "... important because of its innovative work on Hollywood's ideologically-charged construction of subjectivity.... what is exciting about The Acoustic Mirror is that it inspires one to reevaluate a number of now classical theoretical texts, and to see films with an eye to how authorship is constructed and subjectivity is generated." -- Literature and Psychology "As evocative as it is shrewdly systematic, the pioneering theory of female subjectivity formulated in the final three chapters will have wide impact as a major contribution to feminist theory." -- SubStance The Acoustic Mirror attempts to do for the sound-track what feminist film theory of the past decade has done for the image-track -- to locate the points at which it is productive of sexual difference. The specific focus is the female voice understood not merely as spoken dialogue, narration, and commentary, but as a fantasmatic projection, and as a metaphor for authorship.

Book Unplugged Play Toddler

Download or read book Unplugged Play Toddler written by Bobbi Conner and published by Workman Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unplug your toddlers! Here is screen-free play for ages 1-2 that’s creative, fun, and makes the most of everyday household objects. Here are games to play alone and games to play with siblings and friends and parents. Games to play indoors and games for outside. There are toddler-friendly hand-clapping games, games to play with stuffed animals, and games to let off a little steam, plus lots of ideas for keeping toddlers busy (perfect for when you’re making dinner). These are the kinds of truly fun games and activities deliberately designed to stretch the imagination, spark creativity, build strong bodies, forge friendships, and explore the real world—the opposite of hunkering down in front of an addictive screen. Originally published as a single, parent-friendly encyclopedia of more than 700 screen-free, no-batteries-needed games and activities, Unplugged Play is acclaimed as “A terrific prescription for much of what ails children and parents today” (Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods) and “Just plain fun! . . . Will help parents give their children the kind of childhood that more and more children are missing” (Mary Pipher, PhD, author of Reviving Ophelia). These new editions are brightly designed books targeted to a specific age group. And the need, of course, is even greater than when the book was originally published—screens are far more ubiquitous, causing parents even greater concern about their overuse—and these timeless, imaginative, easy-to-implement games are here to the rescue.

Book Unplug 101 Ways to Pull Your Kids Away from Television

Download or read book Unplug 101 Ways to Pull Your Kids Away from Television written by Wanda Kanten Hartfield and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book full of ideas to help lure your kids away from the enticing glow of television and into the world creativity and imagination. It's motivational and practical - a good resource for anyone who works with kids - parents, teachers, grandparents, homeschoolers, group leaders, and baby-sitters. Prefaced by a chapter of statistics and references to current thought on children and television viewing. 101 activities, supported with catchy graphics & easy instructions, are offered for kids varying in age up to preteens, by former television producer and teacher of Romper Room - the longest running children's TV show in the country - from 1953 to the late nineties. Today, television is the number one activity for both kids and adults. Studies show that children devote up to 42 hours per week viewing television (depending on what study you're willing to accept). A recent study by the Journal of Science, March 29, 2002, concludes that the more time kids spend watching television, the more likely they are to behave aggressively in future. "Kids would be better off if they watched LESS THAN one hour a day on average," said lead author Jeffrey Johnson of Columbia University.

Book Stereophonica

Download or read book Stereophonica written by Gascia Ouzounian and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Episodes in the transformation of our understanding of sound and space, from binaural listening in the nineteenth century to contemporary sound art. The relationship between sound and space has become central to both creative practices in music and sound art and contemporary scholarship on sound. Entire subfields have emerged in connection to the spatial aspects of sound, from spatial audio and sound installation to acoustic ecology and soundscape studies. But how did our understanding of sound become spatial? In Stereophonica, Gascia Ouzounian examines a series of historical episodes that transformed ideas of sound and space, from the advent of stereo technologies in the nineteenth century to visual representations of sonic environments today. Developing a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective, Ouzounian draws on both the history of science and technology and the history of music and sound art. She investigates the binaural apparatus that allowed nineteenth-century listeners to observe sound in three dimensions; examines the development of military technologies for sound location during World War I; revisits experiments in stereo sound at Bell Telephone Laboratories in the 1930s; and considers the creation of "optimized acoustical environments" for theaters and factories. She explores the development of multichannel "spatial music" in the 1950s and sound installation art in the 1960s; analyzes the mapping of soundscapes; and investigates contemporary approaches to sonic urbanism, sonic practices that reimagine urban environments through sound. Rich in detail but accessible and engaging, and generously illustrated with photographs, drawings, maps, and diagrams of devices and artworks, Stereophonica brings an acute, imaginative, and much-needed historical sensibility to the growing literature around sound and space.

Book Gauge Invariance Approach to Acoustic Fields

Download or read book Gauge Invariance Approach to Acoustic Fields written by Woon Siong Gan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the symmetry properties of acoustic fields and describes the gauge invariance approach, which can be used to reveal those properties. Symmetry is the key theoretical framework of metamaterials, as has been demonstrated by the successful fabrication of acoustical metamaterials. The book first provides the necessary theoretical background, which includes the covariant derivative, the vector potential, and invariance in coordinate transformation. This is followed by descriptions of global gauge invariance (isotropy), and of local gauge invariance (anisotropy). Sections on time reversal symmetry, reflection invariance, and invariance of finite amplitude waves round out the coverage.

Book Disconnected

  • Author : Carrie James
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2016-09-02
  • ISBN : 0262529416
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Disconnected written by Carrie James and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How young people think about the moral and ethical dilemmas they encounter when they share and use online content and participate in online communities. Fresh from a party, a teen posts a photo on Facebook of a friend drinking a beer. A college student repurposes an article from Wikipedia for a paper. A group of players in a multiplayer online game routinely cheat new players by selling them worthless virtual accessories for high prices. In Disconnected, Carrie James examines how young people and the adults in their lives think about these sorts of online dilemmas, describing ethical blind spots and disconnects. Drawing on extensive interviews with young people between the ages of 10 and 25, James describes the nature of their thinking about privacy, property, and participation online. She identifies three ways that young people approach online activities. A teen might practice self-focused thinking, concerned mostly about consequences for herself; moral thinking, concerned about the consequences for people he knows; or ethical thinking, concerned about unknown individuals and larger communities. James finds, among other things, that youth are often blind to moral or ethical concerns about privacy; that attitudes toward property range from “what's theirs is theirs” to “free for all”; that hostile speech can be met with a belief that online content is “just a joke”; and that adults who are consulted about such dilemmas often emphasize personal safety issues over online ethics and citizenship. Considering ways to address the digital ethics gap, James offers a vision of conscientious connectivity, which involves ethical thinking skills but, perhaps more important, is marked by sensitivity to the dilemmas posed by online life, a motivation to wrestle with them, and a sense of moral agency that supports socially positive online actions.

Book Historical Acoustics

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of contributions to the Special Issue “Historical Acoustics: Relationships between People and Sound over Time”. The research presented here aims to explore the origins of acoustics and examine the relationships that have evolved over the centuries between people and auditory phenomena. Sounds have indeed accompanied human civilizations since the beginning of time, helping them to make sense of the world and to shape their cultures. Several key topics emerged, such as the acoustics of historical worship buildings, the acoustics of sites of archaeological interest, the acoustics of historical opera houses, and the topic of soundscapes as cultural intangible heritage. The book, as a whole, reflects the vibrant research activity around the “acoustics of the past”, which will hopefully be serve as a foundation for inspiring the future path of this discipline.
