Book The H Weld Blundell Collection in the Ashmolean Museum Vol 1

Download or read book The H Weld Blundell Collection in the Ashmolean Museum Vol 1 written by S. Langdon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The H. Weld-Blundell Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Vol. 1: Sumerian and Semitic Religious and Historical d104s The Series of Oxford Editions of Cuneiform Inscriptions which begins with this volume has been planned primarily for 'the purpose of publishing the tablets and inscribed monuments presented to the University of Oxford by Mr. H. Weld blundell of Queen's College. The material contained in the earlier volumes has been Obtained by Mr. Weld-blundell by purchase during his first visit to Mesopotamia in the spring to 1921 and later through the valuable assistance of Captain cook of the Ministry of Awkaf in Bagdad. The munificent patron of the university then decided to send out' an expedition to excavate in Mesopotamia and after a prolonged conference with the writer he decided to excavate Kish, the ancient capital of Babylonia, for the University of Oxford. In view of the heavy expense involved in such a project; for the ruins of Kish consist in two great mounds, tel-el-ahaimer and Umm Gharra, which revert to the oldest period of human history, we gladly accepted the generous offer of the Director of the Field Museum of Natural History (chicago), under sanction of his Board of Trustees, to form a joint expedition. The philological material which shall accrue to Oxford and the 'field Museum will be published in this Series. The Field Museum has undertaken to publish all the archaeological results. We are under no misapprehension concerning the difficult task of excavating one of the largest mounds or double mounds in Mesopotamia. It is already obvious from the experience obtained in the first year's work that the buried remains of these vast ruins cannot be obtained without long and patient exploration. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-anticipated work is the final volume of the CTMMA series and completes the publication of all the cuneiform-inscribed tablets and inscriptions (excluding those on sculptures, reliefs, and seals) in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Published are 183 texts that include 154 cuneiform tablets and tablet fragments, one inscribed clay bulla, fourteen clay cylinders, five clay prisms, and four stone inscriptions. Economic and Administrative texts are from Sippar, Babylon, Kish, Dilbat, Nippur, Drehem, Uruk, and other sites in Babylonia and ancient Iran. First millennium B.C. royal inscriptions date to the reigns of Ashurnasirpal, Sennacherib, Esarhaddon, Ashurbanipal, Nebuchadnezzar, and Nabonidus. The texts are organized in five parts: Part One contains Neo- and Late Babylonian economic and administrative tablets and fragments from the archives of the Ebabbar temple in Sippar. Part Two includes Neo- and Late Babylonian period economic and administrative tablets from Babylonia and other sites. Part Three includes Late Babylonian administrative and archival tablets from Babylon. Part Four contains royal and non-royal brick, stone, bulla, cylinder, and prism inscriptions from the second and first millennia B.C. A final section (Part Five) includes three proto-cuneiform archaic tablets and two Ur III administrative tablets. Professors Ira Spar (Professor of Ancient Studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey and Research Assyriologist at The Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Michael Jursa (University Professor of Assyriology, University of Vienna) were assisted by a team of distinguished scholars and conservators who provided valuable insights into the preparation of scholarly editions of the texts, seal impressions, and technical analysis published in this volume. Ira Spar hand copied and made facsimile drawings of the Museum’s texts with the assistance of Charles H. Wood. Jo Ann Wood-Brown and Charles H. Wood prepared drawings of seal impressions and divine symbols. This four-volume series of publications reaffirms the Museum’s ongoing commitment to promoting wider knowledge of ancient Near Eastern civilizations. Volume one documents 120 tablets, cones, and bricks from the third and second millennia B.C. Volume two publishes 106 religious, scientific, scholastic, and literary texts written in Akkadian and Sumerian that primarily date to the later part of the first millennium B.C. Volume three includes 164 private archival texts and fragments from the first millennium B.C. 442 pages, 174 plates, including drawings of 183 texts and photographs of selected tablets.

Book Temple Restoration in Early Achaemenid Judah

Download or read book Temple Restoration in Early Achaemenid Judah written by Peter Ross Bedford and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2001 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early Achaemenid Persian period, the Jews returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple of Yahweh. This volume investigates issues surrounding the rebuilding of this temple, focusing on the timing and purpose of the project, and the social and political circumstances in which it was undertaken. The study reflects on certain passages from the Old Testament, such as Ezra 1-6, Haggai, and Zechariah 1-8; early Achaemenid Persian administrative practices; and Judean hopes for restoration in order to question the contention that the Jerusalem temple was established as an economic and administrative centre around which competing groups struggled for socio-economic and political power.

Book The Royal Inscriptions of Am l Marduk 561 560 BC Neriglissar 559 556 BC and Nabonidus 555 539 BC Kings of Babylon

Download or read book The Royal Inscriptions of Am l Marduk 561 560 BC Neriglissar 559 556 BC and Nabonidus 555 539 BC Kings of Babylon written by Frauke Weiershäuser and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amēl-Marduk (561–560 BC), Neriglissar (559–556 BC), and Nabonidus (555–539 BC) were the last native kings of Babylon. In this modern scholarly edition of the complete extant corpus of royal inscriptions from each of their reigns, Frauke Weiershäuser and Jamie Novotny provide updated and reliable editions of the texts. The kings of the Neo-Babylonian Empire left hundreds of official inscriptions on objects such as clay cylinders, bricks, paving stones, vases, and stelae. These writings, ranging from lengthy narratives enumerating the deeds of a monarch to labels identifying a ruler as the builder of a given structure, supplement and inform our understanding of the empire. Beginning with a historical introduction to the reigns of these three kings and the corpus of inscriptions, Weiershäuser and Novotny then present each text with an introduction, a photograph of the inscribed object, the Akkadian text in a newly collated transliteration, an English translation, catalogue data, commentary, and an updated bibliography. Additionally, Weiershäuser and Novotny provide new translations of several related Akkadian texts and chronicles. Featuring meticulous yet readable transliterations and translations that have been carefully collated with the originals, this book will be the standard edition for scholars and students of Assyriology, the Neo-Babylonian dialect, and the Neo-Babylonian Empire for decades to come.

Book Where Kingship Descended from Heaven

Download or read book Where Kingship Descended from Heaven written by Deborah Bekken and published by Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures. This book was released on 2023-04-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1923 to 1933, the Chicago Field Museum and the University of Oxford conducted archaeological excavations at the site of Kish, located on the floodplain of the Euphrates River in modern Iraq approximately 80 kilometers south of Baghdad. Over the course of ten years of work, the expedition explored seventeen different mounds both inside and outside the ancient boundaries of Kish. The finds were divided at the end of each season, with the Iraq Museum retaining half of the objects and any one-of-a-kind items and the two excavating institutions splitting the remainder. Beginning in 2004, the Field Museum undertook a reevaluation of its Kish holdings. To highlight new research and insights into the material culture from Kish and our understanding of the importance of the site to Mesopotamian archaeology, the Field Museum held a symposium in 2008 that brought together an international group of scholars who presented papers on various aspects of the ancient city. This volume, which grew out of that symposium, presents a wide array of studies on the excavated material remains from Kish, including cuneiform texts, animal figurines, human remains, lithics, figural stucco wall decorations, and more.
