Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""The òRgveda is a monumental text in both world religion and world literature; yet it is comparatively little known outside a small band of specialists. The oldest Sanskrit text, composed in the latter half of the second millennium BCE, it stands as the foundational text of what will later be called Hinduism. The text consists of over a thousand hymns dedicated to various divinities, composed in sophisticated and often enigmatic poetry. Its range is large - encompassing profound meditations on cosmic enigmas, exuberant tributes to the wonders of the world, ardent praise of the gods and their works, moving and sometimes painful expressions of personal devotion, and penetrating reflections on the ability of mortals to approach and affect the divine and cosmic realms through sacrifice and praise. This guide introduces the text to a wider audience. It provides an overview of the text, its structure and the process of its composition and collection; treats its purpose and how this purpose is reflected in the contents and structure of the text; gives a sense of the text by quoting verses and complete hymns; situates it in the religious practices of its time; and considers its use and reception in later periods, which saw profound changes in religious practices and beliefs. It will also introduce the literary qualities of the text and the poets' belief in the role of their poetry in making sense of, and indeed creating, cosmic order and function by pressing the boundaries of language itself.""--

Book excerpt: The earliest of the four Hindu religious scriptures known as the Vedas, and the first extensive composition to survive in any Indo-European language, the Rig Veda (c. 1200-900 BC) is a collection of over 1,000 individual Sanskrit hymns. A work of intricate beauty, it provides a unique insight into early Indian mythology, religion and culture. This selection of 108 of the hymns, chosen for their eloquence and wisdom, focuses on the enduring themes of creation, sacrifice, death, women, the sacred plant soma and the gods. Inspirational and profound, it provides a fascinating introduction to one of the founding texts of Hindu scripture - an awesome and venerable ancient work of Vedic ritual, prayer, philosophy, legend and faith.

Book Near Eastern Deities in the Rigveda

Download or read book Near Eastern Deities in the Rigveda written by Liny Srinivasan and published by . This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with a deep appreciation for the labor and devotion of all the 19th and early 20th century European scholars who made the Rigveda known to the world. Yet, questions kept lingering: why the Rigveda doesn't have anything entailing Indian prehistory, culture, or of historical India? Who were the people for whose benefit certain sacrificers arranged elaborate festivities, most often participated by gods, so that hymns were composed to please them? The questions remained unanswered as the context of the entire Rigveda was assumed to be mythical or obscure. The Near Eastern sources of Indian Desi words made it possible to identify that it is the lack of context of the Rigveda, more than the obscurity of the language that had been the stumbling block in understanding it. Ancient Indian names were all titular and toponymic. In fact, all names, Sanskrit or Pali, Rigvedic or Puranic, were geo-ethnic in the sense, like Biblical names, both ethnic and personal names were made after the name of a place which could be a country or city, but usually a state. This property has been exploited to its fullest extent, and in doing so, this book answers the above questions, and brings coordination with later Indian literature Epic-Puranas. The book is aimed at understanding the Rigveda deities on the basis of Ancient Near Eastern place names in all available Near Eastern sources from inscription to books with historical and geographical data. It leads to the conclusion that the Rigveda deities are neither Indo-Aryan / Indo-European nor unique to the Rigveda. They are all well known Near Eastern deities except their names. The book opens up a number of new dimensions and should serve as a stepping stone for further research in many related fields of study.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rigveda: The Oldest Literature of the Indians The invitation Of my publishers to have my treatise on the Rigveda (two Parts, Wissenschaftliche Beilage zum Programm der Kantonsschule in Zurich, 1878 and 1879) published in a somewhat revised and extended form, seemed to me the more to be accepted, since I had repeatedly been urged to do so from the most varied sources, and the article was frequently inquired for in the trade. It is plain that to specialists in the subject, to investigators in the field Of the Veda, it cannot offer anything really new; its aim is to embrace the results Of Vedic investiga tion, as well for beginners in the study as for all those who have a more special interest in this literature, the importance Of which is perceived and admitted in ever-widening circles, especially for theologians, philologists and historians. That, however, it is founded throughout On personal investigation Of the sources and examination Of the investigations of others will be easily perceived by every one who takes the trouble to subject the text and notes to a more minute survey. Book The Origins of Yoga and Tantra

Download or read book The Origins of Yoga and Tantra written by Geoffrey Samuel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-27 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yoga, tantra and other forms of Asian meditation are practised in modernized forms throughout the world today, but most introductions to Hinduism or Buddhism tell only part of the story of how they developed. This book is an interpretation of the history of Indic religions up to around 1200 CE, with particular focus on the development of yogic and tantric traditions. It assesses how much we really know about this period, and asks what sense we can make of the evolution of yogic and tantric practices, which were to become such central and important features of the Indic religious scene. Its originality lies in seeking to understand these traditions in terms of the total social and religious context of South Asian society during this period, including the religious practices of the general population with their close engagement with family, gender, economic life and other pragmatic concerns.
