Book Firearms in American History

Download or read book Firearms in American History written by Charles Winthrop Sawyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Firearms in American History: 1600 to 1800 The Colonists in America were the greatest weapon-using people of that epoch in the world. Everywhere the gun was more abundant than the tool. It furnished daily food; it maintained its owners claims to the possession of his homestead among the aboriginal owners of the soil; it helped to win the mother country's wars for possession of the country as a whole. These facts alone raise the interesting questions of what the Colonists used for weapons and where they got them. Further, the ultimate outcome of all strife between the Colonists and other people was victory for the Colonists. While the Colonists may have been excellent fighters, operating in the main upon home ground, and while their wars with other white people were side issues of European wars and to a considerable extent dependent upon the outcome there, it is nevertheless a fact that a war is composed of two factors, only one of which is the combatants themselves. Book With the Guns Classic Reprint

Download or read book With the Guns Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Guns As these sketches of the changing phases of modern war are largely concerned with the work of the artillery, as, indeed, they are written from the standpoint of that branch of the Service, this would seem to be a favourable place to explain shortly the significance of the arm. My excuse, if any be needed, may be sought in the mind of the average man who, terrified as ever of the contemplation of anything technical, puzzled by the grandiloquence of the self appointed expert, regards the art of the artilleryman as written in a book sealed to him for ever by its own abstruseness. Book European Weapons and Warfare 1618 1648

Download or read book European Weapons and Warfare 1618 1648 written by Edvard Wagner and published by Winged Hussar Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reprint of Wagner's classic study of the 30 Year's War period The Thirty Years’ War, which encompassed the entire European continent, was one of the great watersheds of European history. It was a war which involved religious, political and economic contentions. And it was one which changed the face of Europe irreversibly. European Weapons and Warfare 1618-1648 is a minutely-detailed survey of the armies of this extraordinary period. It discusses the developments in strategy and organization and demonstrates these with full diagrams. The techniques of hand-to-hand combat, together with edged weapons, hand guns, artillery and fortifications, are clearly illustrated with drawings taken from contemporary pictures and engravings or specially drawn from museum collections. New military ideas emerged in Sweden with King Gustavus II, who personally built up a powerful, well trained and well-armed military force, and these developments spread rapidly during the Thirty Years’ War, being of great importance too, during England’s Civil War. All of the many nations who took part in the Thirty Years’ War are examined here – their armor and weapons, their military techniques and the organization of their armies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe at War: Exciting Personal Experiences The spectacle of all but one of the really great powers of Europe at war eclipses all the other war spectacles in the history of the World in the number of troops, the magnitude of armament and the theater of operations. Millions of men met upon battlefields where tens of thousands had met before. Siege guns of a size unheard of before were used to reduce fortifications, and perfected machine guns mowed down battalions, while submarine and aeroplanes and monster Zeppelins played for the first time their deadly parts in the carnage of battles. In order to understand and appreciate the importance of events of the great European war of 1914 it is desirable, and more or less necessary, to know the previous war history of Europe, the relations of the contending powers, their peoples and their history. Book Ninety Days Worth of Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ninety Days Worth of Europe Classic Reprint written by Edward Everett Hale and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ninety Days Worth of Europe I am to say, in a prefatory note to this work, that I have as great a contempt for books of travel as I ever had, and quite as much for this book as I have for any of the class. I have also to say to the public, that I have no wish that they should buy it, take it out of Loring's Library at two cents a day, or out of the City Library for nothing. Still less do I advise them to read a word in it, by any accident whatever. But I find, that in six months, since I returned from a very happy little dash across Europe, I have had constant occasion to lend to friends the letters which I sent home, or the note-books and scrap-books which I brought home. I am also constantly referring to them myself for the chastening of the imaginative side of my memory, and the stimulating of its drowsy side. It will be much more convenient to recur to these memorials in print than in their original manuscript; and for this private and personal purpose, here on a New-Hampshire hillside, at too high a level to be hot, and too far from men to be interrupted, on this lovely July day, I begin the arrangement for the press of these pages. They are dedicated to that circle of friends who would have been glad to look over them in manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
