Book The Heart of Whiteness

Download or read book The Heart of Whiteness written by Robert Jensen and published by City Lights Books. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An honest look at racism in the United States, and the liberal platitudes that attempt to conceal it. This book offers an honest and rigorous exploration of what Jensen refers to as the depraved nature of whiteness in the United States. Mixing personal experience with data and theory, Jensen faces down the difficult realities of race, racism, and white privilege. He argues that any system that denies non-white people their full humanity also keeps white people from fully accessing their own. The Heart of Whiteness is both a cautionary tale for those who believe that they have transcended racism, and also an expression of the hope for genuine transcendence. "Very few white writers have been able to point out the pathological nature of white privilege and supremacy with the eloquence of Robert Jensen. In The Heart of Whiteness, Jensen demonstrates not only immense wisdom on the issue of race, but does so in the kind of direct and accessible fashion that separates him from virtually any other academic scholar, or journalist, writing on these subjects today."—Tim Wise, author of Dear White America "With radical honesty, hard facts, and an abundance of insight and compassion, Robert Jensen lays out strategies for recognizing and dismantling white privilege– and helping others to do the same. This text is more than just important; it's useful. Jensen demonstrates again that he is a leading voice in the American quest for justice."—Adam Mansbach, author of Angry Black White Boy and Go the F***to Sleep "Jensen's spotlight on the gaps separating the American promise of liberty and justice from the reality is accessible, powerful and moving. In short, it is a terrific piece of anti-racist writing."—Eleanor Bader, The Brooklyn Rail

Book Collective Guilt

Download or read book Collective Guilt written by Avery Elizabeth Hurt and published by Greenhaven Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holocaust came to an end in 1945, and slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865. Many of the individuals who directly experienced these horrific events are no longer living, but descendants of these victims claim to suffer lasting effects. However, these lingering traces of historical trauma extend even further: descendants of oppressors and perpetrators are often held to be responsible for the atrocities as well. Notions of collective guilt and punishment have been debated from the immediate aftermath of these atrocities to the present, with issues including reparations and admissions of guilt among the contentious topics. This compelling resource tackles this tough topic.

Book New England Bound Slavery and Colonization in Early America

This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History A New York Times Notable Book A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Selection A Providence Journal Best Book of the Year Winner of the Organization of American Historians Merle Curti Award for Social History Finalist for the Harriet Tubman Prize Finalist for the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians Book Prize "This book is an original achievement, the kind of history that chastens our historical memory as it makes us wiser." —David W. Blight, author of Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize Widely hailed as a “powerfully written” history about America’s beginnings (Annette Gordon-Reed), New England Bound fundamentally changes the story of America’s seventeenth-century origins. Building on the works of giants like Bernard Bailyn and Edmund S. Morgan, Wendy Warren has not only “mastered that scholarship” but has now rendered it in “an original way, and deepened the story” (New York Times Book Review). While earlier histories of slavery largely confine themselves to the South, Warren’s “panoptical exploration” (Christian Science Monitor) links the growth of the northern colonies to the slave trade and examines the complicity of New England’s leading families, demonstrating how the region’s economy derived its vitality from the slave trading ships coursing through its ports. And even while New England Bound explains the way in which the Atlantic slave trade drove the colonization of New England, it also brings to light, in many cases for the first time ever, the lives of the thousands of reluctant Indian and African slaves who found themselves forced into the project of building that city on a hill. We encounter enslaved Africans working side jobs as con artists, enslaved Indians who protested their banishment to sugar islands, enslaved Africans who set fire to their owners’ homes and goods, and enslaved Africans who saved their owners’ lives. In Warren’s meticulous, compelling, and hard-won recovery of such forgotten lives, the true variety of chattel slavery in the Americas comes to light, and New England Bound becomes the new standard for understanding colonial America.

This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sin of Slavery, the Guilt of the Church, and the Duty of the Ministry: An Address Delivered Before the Abolition Society at New York, on Anniversary Week, 1858 Paul rejoiced, in his day, that he had not shunned to declare the whole counsel of God. The professed followers of Paul in our day do not shun to rebuke such declaration as fanatical and rash. Before such developments, were it not that our trust is in God and not man, we should have no more any strength, or life, or courage left in us. There is no hope, apart from Gods Word, and from the full and faithful application of it. There is wanting the element of conscientious, stubborn, heartfelt, eternal hostility against slavery as sin, as reprobated and forbidden of God in the same catalogue with lying, perjury, murder, whoremongering, piracy, man stealing, and guilt, that, by the law not of God only, but man, is worthy of death. Where shall such an element be found? How shall it be created, quickened, trained? Not in the school of political self-seeking and expediency; not under obedience to fugitive slave laws; not under proclamations and assertions of allegiance to Dred Scott decisions; not in the school of unrighteous and oppressive statutes; not under the law of silence on the Word of God silence in the pulpit silence in the Tract House; but under the law of fire and thunder in the manifestation of the truth to every mans conscience in the sight of God by revealing the wrath of God from heaven against all unrighteousness and ungodliness of men, and against this stupendous iniquity as foremost and most germinating in enormity and malignity, most sweeping and accumulating in the habits and materials of sin and miser, tlie elements and securities of national ruin. Our only hope is in the revived, living, faithful religion of a free, out-spoken, consistent church, and a fearless, unmuzzled, faithful ministry. Our only hope is in a conscience fastened to the Word of God, and a heart flaming with its sacred fire; a popular church and ministry, holding forth the word of life, and giving themselves up to its supremacy, in such an unrestricted abandonment of all things to its sovereignty (not tlie popular sovereignty, but Gods sovereignty), that it may have free course and be glorified.
