Book The Guilds of Florence Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Guilds of Florence Classic Reprint written by Edgcumbe Staley and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Guilds of Florence "Firenze, la Bellissima e Famosissima Figlia di Roma" - was no mere metaphor of Dante, but a very true title of the First of Modern States. The cumulative energies of the Florentines had their focus in the corporate life of the Trade-Associations, and in no other Community was the Guild-system so thoroughly developed as it was in Florence. A complete and connected History of the Guilds has never been compiled. The present work is put forth, perhaps rather tentatively than exhaustively, to supply the omission. The subject is a large one, and the founts of information are many and various. I have tasted at many springs and drunk from many wells - and my subject-matter has been drawn from the following sources: - (1) Manuscripts - Twelfth to Sixteenth centuries; (2) Printed matter - Books and Periodicals; (3) Letters from Authorities and Friends; (4) Personal Knowledge of Florence and the Florentines. In the study of Manuscripts I have entered largely into the labours of such experts as Emily Baxter, Guido Biagi, R. Davidssohn, Lewis Einstein, F. T. Perrens, J. A. Symonds, and Pasquale Villari, and I have freely used their readings. This I have done because of initial difficulties of time and emolument for original research. The early Constitutions and Statutes of many of the Guilds were written in an almost insolvable mixture of abbreviated Latin and vernacular Tuscan - the deciphering of which would easily consume any man's natural life-time. When I sought for some student to undertake, even a superficial survey, I was met with the crushing but practical reply - "the game is not worth the candle!" Book Niccol Di Lorenzo Della Magna and the Social World of Florentine Printing Ca 1470 1493

Download or read book Niccol Di Lorenzo Della Magna and the Social World of Florentine Printing Ca 1470 1493 written by Lorenz Bšninger and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new history of one of the foremost printers of the Renaissance explores how the Age of Print came to Italy. Lorenz Bšninger offers a fresh history of the birth of print in Italy through the story of one of its most important figures, Niccol˜ di Lorenzo della Magna. After having worked for several years for a judicial court in Florence, Niccol˜ established his business there and published a number of influential books. Among these were Marsilio FicinoÕs De christiana religione, Leon Battista AlbertiÕs De re aedificatoria, Cristoforo LandinoÕs commentaries on DanteÕs Commedia, and Francesco BerlinghieriÕs Septe giornate della geographia. Many of these books were printed in vernacular Italian. Despite his prominence, Niccol˜ has remained an enigma. A meticulous historical detective, Bšninger pieces together the thorough portrait that scholars have been missing. In doing so, he illuminates not only Niccol˜Õs life but also the Italian printing revolution generally. Combining Renaissance studiesÕ traditional attention to bibliographic and textual concerns with a broader social and economic history of printing in Renaissance Italy, Bšninger provides an unparalleled view of the business of printing in its earliest years. The story of Niccol˜ di Lorenzo furnishes a host of new insights into the legal issues that printers confronted, the working conditions in printshops, and the political forces that both encouraged and constrained the publication and dissemination of texts.

Book In the Days of the Guild Classic Reprint

Download or read book In the Days of the Guild Classic Reprint written by L. Lamprey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Days of the Guild Just as the last bit of bread and cheese vanished there came, from far away over the fern, the jingle-jink-jing of strings of bells on the necks of pack-horses. A few minutes later the shaggy head and neck of the leader came in sight. They were strong, not very big horses; and while they were not built for racing, they were quick walkers. They could travel over rough country at a very good pace, even when, as they now were, loaded heavily with packs of wool. Robert stood up, his heart beating fast: he had never seen them so close before. The merchants were laughing and talking and seemed to be in a good humor, and he hoped very much that they would speak to him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks in Florence, and Its Environs, Vol. 1 The present edition of this work is an entire recast, rendered necessary by the numerous changes which have taken place in Florence during the last few years. We have added a few chapters on the neighbourhood, which though less known to strangers than the city, is not only attractive from the beauty of the scenery, but interesting from the history of many of the Palaces, Villas, and Churches, scattered over hill and plain. The illustrations of the Arms of the Municipality, and Guilds, with a selection from those of the distinguished families of Florence, annexed to the end of Vol. II., will, we hope, prove useful, because associated with the chronicles of the old. Book Select Passages Illustrating Florentine Life in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Select Passages Illustrating Florentine Life in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries Classic Reprint written by Esther Gertrude Roper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Passages Illustrating Florentine Life in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries The extracts in this little book have been chosen to illustrate the social and industrial as well as the political life of Florence in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when the practice of government based on Trade Guilds was in process of development. To-day, when similar theories of government are widely discussed, the history of this experiment is of vital interest. During those two centuries and under such rule all the most beautiful churches and palaces of Florence were built, many of its best known poets, novelists, and historians wrote, and some of its most famous sculptors and painters worked. Nearly all of them were members of Trade Guilds. The aim of this necessarily short and inadequate work is to arouse in its readers a desire for more knowledge of those times. A brief bibliography is appended to the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Maid of Florence Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maid of Florence Must drive away the meddling fiend who waits On unemployed hours. Our evil thoughts - Savola. Your evil thoughts, my child - you know not evil - Except a little self-will. But why now, While every maid in Florence, young and old, The fair and homely, noble and the mean - Adorns herself and eagerly awaits The eye of admiration, why should you Her fairest daughter, noble, young and rich, Thus hidden disappoint the longing eyes That watch for you alone? Bianca. But why to-day? This is no festival. What other cause May call them forth? Savola. It is a day of triumph. Our gallant army, by Colonna led, That youthful veteran, with conquest crowned Is entering now the gates: and every heart, That beats with love for Florence, now prepares To grace the triumph of the sons of Florence. Bianca. The sons of Florence! What have they achieved? Say, who has been the hero of the war? No son of Florence, but a foreign chief; The bold Colonna, with a hireling sword, Achieves the laurels of each stricken field; His mercenary band our strong defence, His glory the reproach of Florentines. Savola. You are unjust: although Colonna be The first in arms, yet have our native youth Played well their parts, and should partake his triumph Bianca. They merely did their duty. To have failed Had been dishonor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
