This book was released on 2021-08-27 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid concerns about the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Guatemala, in January 2020 decreed travel bans from China, which were later expanded to other countries. The country had the first confirmed COVID-19 case on March 13 and the first death on March 15. Some days before that, on March 5, the government had declared a “state of calamity” (Declaración del Estado de Calamidad Pública - Decreto Gubernativo Número 5-2020), which allowed the government to limit some activities,1 and to take different actions2 to protect the health and safety of all persons in Guatemala. This document updates a previous report (Díaz Bonilla, Laborde and Piñeiro, 2021) on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food systems in Guatemala. First, it brings up to date the evolution of the pandemic, using different indicators. Second, it summarizes the main policy responses, costs, and financing. Third, it updates the evolution of key economic and nutritional variables up to the time of this writing (June, 2021). Fourth, there is a more detailed analysis of the evolution of some food value chains that are central for food consumption in Guatemala. Fifth, main results for 2021 and 2022 of previous modeling work are briefly presented. A final section discusses policy considerations in light of the updated analysis.

Book US Guatemala Remittance Corridor

Download or read book US Guatemala Remittance Corridor written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study gives an overview of the intermediation of worker remittance flows from the United States to Guatemala. In contrast to other remittance corridors in the world, most transfers in this corridor are channeled in the United States through the formal sector, and distributed in Guatemala through the banking system. However, both senders and receivers have little access to financial products and services. This study argues that in a country characterized by high income inequality and low and concentrated access to credit, the large role played by domestic banks in distributing remittances seems promising in terms of creating a point of contact that could lead to cross-sales of other financial services. The report also argues that authorities have an important coordination and catalytic role to play, for increased efficiency in remittance intermediation, fostering competition, and ultimately highlighting the potential for greater access. The report concludes with specific avenues for further policy action in terms of transparency, regulatory environment, financial literacy and access, risk

Book A Study in Government Guatemala

Download or read book A Study in Government Guatemala written by Kalman H. Silvert and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concerns of this monograph are, primarily, the organization and functioning of the Guatemalan government, and secondly, the implications of the reasons for such functioning. The country, in effect, is here used as a case in point, but with full recognition of the converse validity of describing a de facto situation in itself. My second purpose is to take the assembled facts of the matter and to try to treat of them as a problem in government with relation to the general questions which confront students of politics everywhere. A general awakening of awareness among area specialists of the importance of relating their geographical interests to broader trends is of special significance to the political scientist, who, by the nature of his discipline, is interested in both intra- and international phenomena. -- Preface.
