Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of Greater Britain a Sketch of the History of the British Colonies and Dependencies At the end of the fifteenth century European traders were very anxious to find a sea-route to India. The Portuguese had made some attempts to reach it by doubling the south point of Africa, but without success. Then came a Genoese sailor, Christopher Columbus, who proposed to sail straight across the Atlantic, for it was then held that this ocean stretched unbroken from Europe to Asia. Nobody would listen to him. Men did not care to venture far into the open sea, and to endeavour to cross the Atlantic, the Sea of Darkness, seemed to them stark folly. Only after years of waiting did Columbus persuade Queen Isabella of Castile to aid him in fitting out three small ships. With these he left Spain on the 3rd of August, 1492. No one expected to see him return, and many of his sailors, when they saw the last of land, wept and wailed, and wished themselves at home again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Empire: A Sketch of the Geography, Growth, Natural and Political Features of the United Kingdom, Its Colonies and Dependencies Since this suggestion was made many excellent works have appeared, tending to make Geography an attractive study, by combining it largely with natural science and the history of man. The present volume is one more attempt to render instruction in this direction food for the mind, and not mere stufiing for the memory: its aim being to give true ideas with respect to the country we live in and the relations of England with her colonies and dependencies, unbiassed by mere conventional opinion or exaggerated national sentiment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the British Colonies: A Short Account of the Origin and Growth of the Principal Colonies of Great Britain The design in the following pages is to set forth a rough and condensed account of the origin and growth of the principal British Colonies, with a glance at their possible future. The intention was to treat each item as shortly as possible, consistent with clearness, but the extreme interest of the subject. Matter proved a constant impulsion to stray from this laudable resolve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The British Empire in the Nineteenth Century Vol 3

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Empire in the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 3: Its Progress and Expansion at Home and Abroad; Comprising a Description and History of the British Colonies and Dependencies The people who dwell in a coal-producing country are always liable to be shocked by tidings of calamities mostly invested with a dreadful sameness of detail - the deadened roar of subterraneous explosion due to the ignition of gas from a fiery seam of coal; the column of smoke, with the shattered timbers of the staging at the pit-mouth, shot into the air; the hurried gathering of women and children around the scene of disaster; the cries of anguish that rend the air, as the bodies, brought to bank, are recognized by the wives, the mothers, the sisters, the daughters, and the sweethearts of the dead. Our first instance of colliery-accidents arose from a very unusual cause. On January 16th, 1862, about 10.30 a.m., the beam of the pumping-engine at Hartley Pit, about ten miles north-east of Newcastle-on-Tyne, suddenly broke, from rottenness of the metal, and fell into the shaft, crushing in its fall an ascending "cage." Five men were instantly killed or fatally wounded, and three others were extricated alive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
