Book A Note on the Profitability of Commercial Bank Trust Departments

Download or read book A Note on the Profitability of Commercial Bank Trust Departments written by John A. Haslem and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This note attempts to add to the sparse literature concerning the profitability of commercial bank trust departments. Utilizing a much different research design and data than previous research, the results appear consistent in several basic aspects. First, it has been found that trust departments are generally unprofitable. This study finds trust department operations are relatively less important (relatively smaller revenue) in well-managed banks (relatively high returns on capital). Second, previous research found trust department profitability tends to increase with size. This study finds that trust department operations (measure by relative revenue) are more important in large banks. Earlier work by Haslem (1968) using a similar model found the relationship between returns on capital and deposit size are quite significant and generally positively related. It is quite likely that the positive relationship between relative volume of trust department revenue and size implies that trust operations become more profitable (or less unprofitable) as they increase relative sales volume. Third, previous research found that considerable variability in profitability exists among trust departments. Haslem (1968) also found significant variability in profitability among commercial banks. Thus, to the extent that bank and trust department profitability are positively correlated, significant variability in trust department profitability would be expected.
