Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grounds of Non-Catholic Freedom in the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas The philosophical tendency in the present century has been to temper the one-sided, extreme Hegelian idealism by an increasing adherence to the results of psychological science, with a consequent emphasis on the immediate content and function of consciousness, and with a corresponding relaxation of the effort to define conscious ness in terms of ultimate reality. On the one hand this tendency has resulted in a more modest conception of the individual as related to the Absolute, while on the other it has increased in large degree the conception of the relationship of the individual to a larger organ ism, society. Aside from the purely psychological inquiry as to the function and content of consciousness as such, philosophy has con tented itself with stating the functions of the individual, his capacity, norm of conduct, laws of development, as a member of the social whole. But the conception of freedom, of activity, progress, devel Opment, worked out by the Kantian and post-kantian systems is taken for granted as fundamental in the present-day conception of the individual. Stated from the religious standpoint, however, the modern indi vidual is defined in quite different terms, or rather with added terms. Theological science readily grants the assumption of philosophical psychology, that consciousness is dynamic, that the individual is functionally Related to the social whole; but as philosophy takes for its point of departure psycho-logical process, SO theology takes for its point of departure the psycho-religious activity of consciousness, and defines the individual accordingly. On one hand this results immediately in a richer conception of the Absolute, for the Absolute of theology is not only such as is demanded by the logical point of view of philosophy, but is also such as is demanded by the point of view of religious life, which includes the rich content of an imaginary world of perfect being, of emotional fellowship with kindred Spirits, and of communion with the Absolute Father. Book Judged by the Law of Freedom

Download or read book Judged by the Law of Freedom written by Richard H. Bulzacchelli and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2006 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judged by the Law of Freedom explores a paradox central to orthodox Christianity--the assertion that human beings are responsible for their own salvation yet inescapably dependent upon God for their deliverance. Christianity's attempt to maintain both these truths simultaneously has been a focal point of serious and recurrent tension throughout the Church's two thousand year history. Judged by the Law of Freedom proposes a resolution for this paradox founded upon the metaphysical apparatus offered by St. Thomas Aquinas.

Book excerpt: Keen to learn but short on time? Get to grips with the life of Saint Thomas Aquinas in next to no time with this concise guide. 50Minutes.com provides a clear and engaging analysis of the life, work and ideas of the medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas. Unlike many of his influential predecessors, Aquinas believed that reason and faith are not separate and incompatible, but rather are two ways of attaining knowledge of God. He was a prolific commentator on the Bible and the writings of Aristotle, and some of his works, including in particular his masterpiece the Summa theologiae, continue to form the basis of Catholic doctrine over 700 years after his death. In many ways, Aquinas was far ahead of his time: his views on personal and political morality emphasised the importance of individual freedom, and even paved the way for later democratic and secular ideas. He was canonised in 1323 and made a Doctor of the Church in 1567. In just 50 minutes you will: • Learn about the intellectual context in which Aquinas was working and the earlier philosophers who influenced his writings • Discover Aquinas’s main works, including the Summa theologiae and the Summa contra gentiles, and the key ideas of Thomist thought • Understand the continuing influence of Aquinas’s work within the Catholic Church ABOUT 50MINUTES.COM | History & Culture 50MINUTES.COM will enable you to quickly understand the main events, people, conflicts and discoveries from world history that have shaped the world we live in today. Download or read book Grace and Freedom written by Bernard Lonergan and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace and Freedom represents Lonergan's entry into subject matter that would occupy him throughout his lifetime. At the same time it is a manifestation of the thinking that has made him one of the world's foremost Thomist scholars. The volume is in two parts. Part One is a new edition of "Grace and Freedom: Operative Grace in the Thought of St Thomas Aquinas", four articles written by Lonergan in 1941-42, first published in book form in 1971. This edition includes new notes and indices. Part Two is Lonergan's doctoral dissertation, "Gratia Operans", submitted to the Gregorian University, Rome, in 1940. Published here in full for the first time, the dissertation provides important context and background for the articles in the first part. Lonergan's thesis is that, from the sixteenth century onwards, commentators on Thomas Aquinas lacked historical consciousness, raised questions that Thomas had never considered, and obfuscated the issues. Lonergan's achievement consists in having retrieved the actual position of Thomas by adopting a historical approach that has reconstructed his intellectual development on grace. The majority of contemporary theologians now agree with the implementation of the historical method. What Lonergan also adds is a unique diagnosis of the mistakes made by the modern scholastic authors in their treatment of grace. Throughout this work, Lonergan discovers in Thomas a mind in constant development, displaying radical shifts on fundamental questions. Together the two parts not only reveal an essential step in Lonergan's own development, but also make an impressive contribution to Thomist studies.

Download or read book Summa Libertas written by St. Thomas Aquinas and published by Libertas Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Our Lord was tempted in the desert, the devil offered Him "all the kingdoms of the world and their glory." (Mt 4:8-9) It stands to reason that Satan was able to offer Jesus earthly kingdoms because he owned them. History has repeatedly demonstrated that earthly kingdoms remain a stronghold of Satan's evil works through man's lust for power. What then is a Christian to do while living under such earthly authority? Our Lord's rejection of Satan's temptation teaches the Christian to follow Christ alone and His Kingdom is "not of this world." (Jn 18:36). Saints throughout history, from Saint Peter to Venerable Fulton Sheen, have echoed Christ's example by rejecting the desire for earthly power and freely choosing to love God and neighbor despite living within modern day kingdoms replete with evil influence. They teach: "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29), "An unjust law is no law at all" (Saint Augustine of Hippo), and not to "wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person" (Saint Teresa of Calcutta). Following the method Saint Thomas Aquinas used in Summa Theologiae, Summa Libertas draws on Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the writings of the saints to guide a sound case for a libertarian Christianity. Readers will find that not only are the principles of liberty compatible with the faith-they are, in fact, necessary.

Book Thomas Aquinas and Karl Barth

Download or read book Thomas Aquinas and Karl Barth written by Bruce L. McCormack and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-20 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Aquinas and Karl Barth are often taken to be two of the greatest theologians in the Christian tradition. This book undertakes a systematic comparison of them through the lens of five key topics: (1) the being of God, (2) Trinity, (3) Christology, (4) grace and justification, and (5) covenant and law. Under each of these headings, a Catholic portrait of Aquinas is presented in comparison with a Protestant portrait of Barth, with the theological places of convergence and contrast highlighted. This volume combines a deep commitment to systematic theology with an equally profound commitment to mutual engagement. Understood rightly and well, Aquinas and Barth contribute powerfully to the future of theology and to an ecumenism that takes doctrinal confession seriously while at the same time seeking unity among Christians.
