Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume includes a final group of preeminent, identified artists from the period of transition at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century. Artistic production at this time was still rooted in late medieval thought, yet more and more seized with new renaissance developments, and at a permanent state of ferment with constantly changing needs of society. The catalogue deals with correspondingly complex issues of interpretation through the works of Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Bouts, Gerard David, Colijn de Coter and Goossen van der Weyden. It comprises a technical, stylistic and iconographical investigation of seventeen paintings on the basis of a scientific research method, which has been fully established over the years. The authors have been able to adjust various attributions and interpretations. At the same time most valuable discoveries have been made with regard to the provenance of some work belonging to the Albrecht Bouts and Colijn de Coter Groups.

Book The Flemish Primitives in Bruges

Download or read book The Flemish Primitives in Bruges written by Till-Holger Borchert and published by Ludion Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five centuries ago, Bruges was home to the Flemish Primitives. At the time, Bruges was one of the most important cities in Europe: an international centre of trade and meeting place for foreign merchants. It is this medieval Bruges through which we are guided by Till-Holger Borchert, director of the Bruges Museums. The wealth of the city and its art-loving inhabitants attracted dozens of artists. The pioneers among the socalled Flemish Primitives - Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Dieric Bouts, Hugo van der Goes and Gerard David - developed a new style of painting over the course of the fifteenth century that would make its influence felt as far as southern Europe. Although many of their paintings now hang among the masterpieces of the world's most prominent museums, Bruges was nevertheless able to hold on to a number of dazzling specimens of its owns heritage. This book allows you to take that heritage home. It is the perfect introduction for those who would like to become better acquainted with the artistic Bruges of the fifteenth centyury, as well as a splendid souvenir for anyone who has admired the Flemish Primitives in the city's main museums. Book Colard Mansion

Download or read book Colard Mansion written by Renaud Adam and published by Exhibitions International. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La 4e de couverture indique : "In the late Middle Ages, the time of Charles the Bold and Hans Memling, Bruges was a metropolis of books. One of the central figures in the international book trade was Colard Mansion (active from 1457 to 1484). Initially, in addition to being a valued translator, Mansion was primarily a highly sought-after copyist of luxury manuscripts, but when the art of printing made its entrée in Europe in 1455, he saw his chance and became one of the first in the Low Countries to specialise in the new medium of printed books. In no time, he became one of the most important book entrepreneurs in Bruges and environs. In this book, manuscripts, illuminated incunabula and rare prints bring Mansion's innovative book business back to life. Nearly fifty specialists from around the world offer unique insights into Mansion's life, many aspects of which are shrouded in mystery. Among other things they describe the gradual transition from manuscript to print, explain workshop practices and publishers' strategies, and provide contextual information about late-medieval printmaking and the creation of an impressive oeuvre of literary editions in the vernacular. Mansion developed a brand that remained solid for centuries. This book holds the key to understanding why."

Book excerpt: In this publication, Ellen Harvey restores the ties between the city of Bruges and the harbor. In a new installation, behind a mirrored wall punctuated with peepholes, Harvey has hung a selection of paintings dating from the seventeenth- to the early twentieth-century, all of which belong to the reserve collection. Her work is an invitation to rediscover these rarely seen artworks. The paintings of the city, the canals, and the sea are reflected in the panorama on the opposite wall: Harvey's painted maps (2.75 x 21 meter) based on satellite images. The elaborate waterways, executed in mirrored glass, demonstrate the importance of the rivers and canals for the city. Text in English and Dutch.

Download or read book The Art of Law written by Stefan Huygebaert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this volume were written by historians, legal historians and art historians, each using his or her own methods and sources, but all concentrating on topics from the broad subject of historical legal iconography. How have the concepts of law and justice been represented in (public) art from the Late Middle Ages onwards? Justices and rulers had their courtrooms, but also churches, decorated with inspiring images. At first, the religious influence was enormous, but starting with the Early Modern Era, new symbols and allegories began appearing. Throughout history, art has been used to legitimise the act of judging, but artists have also satirised the law and the lawyers; architects and artisans have engaged in juridical and judicial projects and, in some criminal cases, convicts have even been sentenced to produce works of art. The book illustrates and contextualises the various interactions between law and justice on the one hand, and their artistic representations in paintings, statues, drawings, tapestries, prints and books on the other.
