Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great War Syndicate, Etc All that night, at every point in the United States which was reached by telegraph, there burnt a smo thered fire, and the next morning, when the regu lar and extra editions of the newspapers were poured out upon the land, the fire burst into a roaring blaze. From lakes to gulf, from ocean to ocean, on mountain and plain, in city and prairie, it roared and blazed. Parties, sections, politics, were all forgotten. Every American formed part of an electric system - the same fire flashed into every soul. No matter what might be thought on the morrow, or in the coming days which might bring better understanding, this day the unreasoning fire blazed and roared. With morning newspapers in their hands, men rushed from the breakfast-tables into the streets to meet their fellow-men. What was it that they should do? Book The Great War and Its Lessons Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Great War and Its Lessons Classic Reprint written by Nicholas Murray Butler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great War and Its Lessons We are a neutral nation, and the President has rightly enjoined us all to observe neutrality in speech and in deed. But neutrality is not indifference: it is not the neutrality of the casual passer-by who views with amused carelessness a fight between two street rowdies; it is the neutrality of the just judge who aims, without passion and without prejudice, to render judgment on the proved facts. We cannot if we would refrain from passing judgment upon the conduct of men whether singly or in nations, and we should not attempt to do so.' In the first place, the moral judgment of the American people as to this war and as to the several steps in the declaration and conduct of it, is clear, calm, and practically unanimous. There is no beat ing of drums and blowing of bugles, but rather a sad pain and grief that our kin across the sea, owing whatever allegiance and speaking whatever tongue, are engaged in public murder and destruction on the most stupendous scale recorded in history. This of itself proves that the education of public opinion has proceeded far, and, whatever the war-traders and militarists may say, that the heart of the American people is sound and its head well-informed. The attitude of the American press is worthy of the highest praise; in some notable instances the very high-water mark of dignity and of power has been reached. When the war-clouds have lifted, I believe that the moral judgment of the American people as to this war will prove to be that of the sober - minded and fair-minded men in every country of Europe. Book At the Supreme War Council Classic Reprint

Download or read book At the Supreme War Council Classic Reprint written by Captain Peter E. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At the Supreme War Council Though it has hardly been detected by the many and hostile critics of this book, my main object in writing it was to establish the truth on a number of points: for a number of plain truths about the war had been obscured for the public, or rather never revealed to it, at all. Many of my views, here expressed, are, and perhaps always will be, debatable: for men always have, and always will, argue for ever about battles, and no estimate of a human character can be fixed or final. But there is one fact which is unshaken and unshakable, and which was no less a shock to the public than it had been to myself when it came to my knowledge. In this war we, the Allies, were big and our enemies small during almost the whole contest. Yet they held out for four years, and nearly won. Book excerpt: After forty years, Hammett has a worthy successor' The Times Dave Brandstetter stands alongside Philip Marlowe, Sam Spade and Lew Archer as one of the best fictional PIs in the business. Like them, he was tough, determined, and ruthless when the case demanded it. Unlike them, he was gay. Joseph Hansen's groundbreaking novels follow Brandstetter as he investigates cases in which motives are murky, passions run high, and nothing is ever as simple as it looks. Set in 1970s and 80s California, the series is a fascinating portrait of a time and a place, with mysteries to match Chandler and Macdonald. In Fadeout, Dave is sent to investigate the death of radio personality Fox Olsen. His car is found crashed in a dry river bed. But there is no body - and as Dave looks deeper into his life, it seems as though he had good reasons to disappear.
