Into this period, in rapidsuccession, have'been crowded events of momentous importance to the human race. In. Our own country, beloved and cherished above all others for her 'free insti tutions and her liberty, Congress has passed many organic and important laws for the common welfare. Sincevthe opening of '46, it* has ratified no less than twelve: treaties with foreign powers. By one, it has settled that long vexed and harassing question of our western boundary beyond the Rocky Mountains; by' another, it has established peace and perpe'tual friendship with a leading nation of the world, and opened to our commerce five most valuable ports of its empire by others, it has given [us reci procity and equality with nations 'to which our commerce is rapidly extending, and last, and not least, by another still, it has' added a vast territory to our limits, equivalent to' 14 of the pire State, and which more than any or all of these. Compacts, is to effect the future destiny of our republic. For a distance of nearly '700 miles north and south, and' nearly 1000 east and west, from the Rio Grande and the Anahuac' mountains on the. East, the'gulf of California on the south, and-oregon on the north, it extends our empire to the shores of the Pacific, making square miles, and 452 millions of acres. Within this foundthe maritime valley of California, more than 500 'miles' long and 150 broad - the Italy of America in climate and sky the region of the vine and olive, ' and rich beyond many Other parts of the earth for all the grains of our Atlantic coast. As a diamond, 'on its bosom rests the bay of Francisco, adequate to the navies of the world. But a short pathway will lead _its'shipsto_ the Eastern Empire. Here the tide of civilization is to extend, and this valley, the broader interior and the banks of the Rio Grande, are by this compact to_be peopled with myriads. Of' free men, or with millions-of slaves. In the-lines of this issue have fallen. Many, gallant and noble spirits. It has Cost treasure and blood, - seventy-five millions and twenty thousand men. These are some of the'events which have passed before us fraught withthe deepest-interests of-humanit'y, and of a magnitude to form an era in our history. He was an anticorporate campaigner who became John D. Rockefeller’s favorite lawyer. A student and law partner of abolitionist Benjamin F. Wade, Ranney acquired an antislavery reputation and recruited troops for the Union army; but as a Democratic candidate for governor he denied the power of Congress to restrict slavery in the territories, and during the Civil War and Reconstruction he condemned Republican policies. Ranney was a key delegate at Ohio’s second constitutional convention and a two-time justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. He advocated equality and limited government as understood by radical Jacksonian Democrats. Scholarly discussions of Jacksonian jurisprudence have primarily focused on a handful of United States Supreme Court cases, but Ranney’s opinions, taken as a whole, outline a broader approach to judicial decision making. A founder of the Ohio State Bar Association, Ranney was immensely influential but has been understudied until now. He left no private papers, even destroying his own correspondence. In The Jacksonian Conservatism of Rufus P. Ranney, David M. Gold works with the public record to reveal the contours of Ranney’s life and work. The result is a new look at how Jacksonian principles crossed the divide of the Civil War and became part of the fabric of American law and at how radical antebellum Democrats transformed themselves into Gilded Age conservatives.

The visits to Great Britain and Europe, a tour of the Near East and the Holy Land, and excursions in Cuba, Spain, and North Africa, as well as two trips to Illinois, he described in frequent letters to the Evening Post. Reprinted widely, and later published in two volumes, these met much critical acclaim, one notice praising the "quiet charm of these letters, written mostly from out-of-the-way places, giving charming pictures of nature and people, with the most delicate choice of words, and yet in the perfect simplicity of the true epistolary style." His absence during nearly one-fifth of this nine-year period reflected the growing prosperity of Bryant's newspaper, and his confidence in his editorial partner John Bigelow and correspondents such as William S. Thayer, as well as in the financial acumen of his business partner Isaac Henderson. These were crucial years in domestic politics, however, and Bryant's guidance of Evening Post policies was evident in editorials treating major issues such as the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law, the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, the rise of the Republican Party, and the Dred Scott Decision, as well as in his correspondence with such statesmen as Salmon P. Chase, Hamilton Fish, William L. Marcy, Edwin D. Morgan, and Charles Sumner. His travel letters and journalistic writings reflected as well his acute interest in a Europe in turmoil. In France and Germany he saw the struggles between revolution and repression; in Spain he talked with journalists, parliamentary leaders, and the future president of the first Spanish republic; in New York he greeted Louis Kossuth and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Bryant's close association with the arts continued. He sat for portraits to a dozen painters, among them Henry P. Gray, Daniel Huntington, Asher Durand, Charles L. Elliott, and Samuel Laurence. The landscapists continued to be inspired by his poetic themes. Sculptor Horatio Greenough asked of Bryant a critical reading of his pioneering essays on functionalism. His old friend, the tragedian Edwin Forrest, sought his mediation in what would become the most sensational divorce case of the century, with Bryant and his family as witnesses. His long advocacy of a great central park in New York was consummated by the legislature. And in 1852, his eulogy on the life of James Fenimore Cooper became the first of several such orations which would establish him as the memorialist of his literary contemporaries in New York.
