Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Hymns of the Church, Their Origin and Authorship These notes on the Great Hymns of the Church are the result of the author's observations on the subject for years. He believes that our people in the public service would sing with the spirit and the understanding in a far higher degree, did they know more about their hymns; and that if any one would undertake simply to tell the story of each of them - giving some account of its origin and authorship, he would render them no small service, even if he should only succeed in awakening a deeper interest in the service of song, and calling forth some more competent laborer to enter the same field. He had originally intended to confine himself in his annotations to twelve of the Great Hymns and presenting them in the shape of a series of contributions to the "Canada Presbyterian"; but ere he had finished that essay he received such encouragement from brethren whose opinions he was bound to respect, that he determined on extending his investigations and, at length, presenting the result in the form desired. For careful supervision and judicious selection of tunes his thanks are specially due to Mr. S. R. Hart, Toronto. These notes, such as they are, are now commended to Him without whose blessing nothing is good and nothing strong by the Author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns That Are Immortal: With Some Account of Their Authorship, Origin, History and Influence The preparation of hymns that are IM mortal was undertaken as a result of studies pursued by the author in the fulfilment of duties imposed upon him by his appointment to serve on a committee on hymn-book re vision, and also from a' conviction that there is a field for its circulation within which it will accomplish much good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns and Their Authors: How Some of Our Best Known Hymns Came to Be Written I suppose most of you as children, you younger ones especially, regard religion as something rather boring and uninteresting. You will look upon the Sunday School and Church as places where your parents force you to attend and naturally this does not always go down very well when the weather is fine and sunny and there are lots of more exciting things to do outside. The very word religion probably conjures up for you memories of long prayers and dull sermons, the only relief coming at the announcement of a hymn which is possibly the only time in the service when you begin to pay attention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Hymns: Their Authors and Teaching Few things reveal the richness of our Christian inheritance and help us to realise the Communion of Saints more than the study of our Church hymns. They take us back into bygone centuries, introduce us to the saints and martyrs of our common faith, supply us with holy thoughts and burning words, and dispose us to join in the ministry of song. The Book of Psalms was the hymn book of our Blessed Lord and His Apostles. The Song of the Blessed Virgin, the Song of Zacharias, and the Song of Simeon, were the earliest New Testament hymns. The angels song, Glory to God in the highest, was the first Christian hymn sung after the birth of Christ; and there is evidence that the early Christians sang it daily, and gradually enlarged it for general use, that, with the angels, they might praise their God and Saviour. Pliny the younger, a heathen writer of the first century, says, Christians meet at anearly hour, before dawn, for worship, and sing a hymn of praise to Christ as God. In the Christian Church some of the Psalms soon became great favourites, especially the Hundredth, which alone bears the title, A Psalm of Praise, or Thanksgiving, it being all aglow with gratitude and adoration, for the creative power and goodness of our Lord. For, as The Speaker's Commentary says, This Psalm contains a promise of Christianity, as winter at its close contains a promise of Spring. The trees are ready to bud, the flowers are just hidden by the light soil, the clouds are heavy with rain, the sun shines in his strength; only a genial wind from the south is wanted to give a new life to all things. When that new life came through Christ Jesus, this Psalm was felt to express the Church's gratitude, and, in the Metrical Version so well known to us, it became the regular Hymn of Thanksgiving in all branches of the Reformed Church of Christ. It is one of the few Psalms to which Shakespeare refers in his plays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Third, to these he has added a choice selection of more recent hymns of varied or unknown authorship, many of which have not heretofore appeared in manuals of praise, and some of which, being abridged, amended, and arranged, are now first fitted to be used in the service and worship of the house of prayer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Great Hymns Character as to deserve rank as the great hymns of universal literature. In this sea son of Lent - a season which is each year more widely observed by those who pro fess and call themselves Christians - a pre sensation of the greatest of the hymns of the Christian Church is appropriate. This not only for their religious significance, but because of their literary value; an attribute too often lost sight of by the general reader, who does not appreciate the fact that a knowledge of the masterpieces of hymno graphy is as essential to a broad literary education as a knowledge of the master pieces of short-story composition. Were we obliged to search the treasures of the various hymnodies, the task of selecting the seven great hymns - one for each Wednes day in Lent - would be appalling, and years might well be occupied in the task; but, fortunately, the responsibility of selection and the labor of appraisement has been. Book The Hymn Book of the Church Or the Growth of the Psalter Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Hymn Book of the Church Or the Growth of the Psalter Classic Reprint written by Frances Arnold-Forster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hymn-Book of the Church or the Growth of the Psalter This book, it should be clearly understood, is not to be looked upon as a commentary on the Psalms. Its claim is a far humbler one - namely, that it is an attempt to place the average reader of the Psalms in a better position for the profitable study and understanding of existing oommen taries, written by scholars and past-masters of the subject. The need for some such preparatory book was brought home to the writer some years ago through the experiences gained in a Study Circle on the Book of Psalms. The members of it were educated women, all of them thoroughly familiar with the prayer-book Text of the Psalter, but the majority of them had no knowledge at all of the history of the Book, or of the results of present-day scholarship. The experiment was suggested of tracing out the analogy between the work of compiling an English Hymnal, intended for both public and private use, and the gradual growth of the Jewish hymn-book, the one true standard Hymn Book of the Church. This method threw light on the literary history of the Psalms. It helped to explain altera tions and additions in the text, and raised various points of discussion concerning authorship.
