Book excerpt: Teach children about two extraordinary events in history when the God of the Bible proved himself to be the one true God. Kids today are faced with a huge range of different views on who God is (or isn't). How can they be sure who's got it right? This beautifully illustrated hardback storybook for children aged 3-6 is written by the team behind The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross. It retells two extraordinary events in history when the God of the Bible proved himself to be the one true God. First it takes children back to Elijah's time and the gripping "God contest" between the God of the Bible, Yahweh, and the false god Baal. Then it fast-forwards to a different mountain and another "God contest" at an empty tomb. Once the evidence is examined, it invites kids, in a world of so many options, to decide with confidence to join Team Jesus.

Book The Challenge of Jesus

Download or read book The Challenge of Jesus written by N. T. Wright and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Challenge of Jesus makes the arguments laid out in Jesus and the Victory of God accessible to lay readers. Bestselling author and theologian N.T.Wright does more than just rehash these arguments: he adds a discussion of the resurrection, and addresses the prickly problem of relevance. In the first six chapters of The Challenge of Jesus, Wright tackles many of the questions of the historical Jesus debate. He then moves on to address how all these historical-cum-theological issues are significant for Christians living in a postmodern world. The Challenge of Jesus is ideal for those beginning academic studies or just wanting to go deeper with their Christology and understanding of the person and work of Christ.

  • Author : Gustaf Aulen
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Christus Victor written by Gustaf Aulen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustaf Aulen's classic work, 'Christus Victor', has long been a standard text on the atonement. Aulen applies history of ideas' methodology to historical theology in tracing the development of three views of the atonement. Aulen asserts that in traditional histories of the doctrine of the atonement only two views have usually been presented, the objective/Anselmian and the subjective/Aberlardian views. According to Aulen, however, there is another type of atonement doctrine in which Christ overcomes the hostile powers that hold humanity in subjection, at the same time that God in Christ reconciles the world to Himself. This view he calls the "classic" idea of the atonement. Because of its predominance in the New Testament, in patristic writings, and in the theology of Luther, Aulen holds that the classic type may be called the distinctively Christian idea of the atonement.

Book WINNING THE INVISIBLE WAR WITH CHRIST

Download or read book WINNING THE INVISIBLE WAR WITH CHRIST written by Akinbowale Isaac Adewumi and published by Akinbowale Isaac Adewumi. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reality of the invisible world and its wars is evinced by tangible realities in the physical ephemeral sphere. Sometimes, abstract scenes from the dream world appearing in form of sweet dreams or nightmares in human subconscious mind metamorphose into real life experiences, to say the least. The enigma that stems from these ethereal perspectives seems to stick in the silver lining of our day-to-day activities irrespective of any personal persuasion, religious belief or freethinking conviction. It is clear from these indications that the physical is largely ruled by the spiritual and that prevailing events in the affairs of mankind are the resultant effects of the sublime and impalpable causes. There are invisible courts where decisions are made and verdicts are passed which influence visible happenings on this side of the divide and reflect such streaks in the elemental system in an unhinged manner. It is mostly characterized by annoying, recurrent misfortunes. Author Isaac Adewumi, in Winning the Invisible War with Christ, proposes to people from all walks of life that invisible wars are inevitable and can only be won through Christ Who created all things. He canvasses to the reader that the deployment of formidable spiritual arsenals listed in the book would put man in charge of his destiny, give him his deserved dominion and guarantee his championship for the best in life instead of slaving under the domination of some cosmic forces.

Book excerpt: Death is often thought of as the inescapable terminus of life"€"something which, in the end, overpowers and conquers us. But in Christian theology, the death of Christ has central significance for our salvation. Christ died victoriously, conquering death and triumphing over his and our enemies. His death is our life. This glorious truth occupied a large place in the thinking of Scottish theologian Hugh Martin (1822"€"85). Martin is best known for his mind-stretching books such as The Atonement and The Shadow of Calvary, and for his insightful character study of Simon Peter. But there exists a significant corpus of largely forgotten shorter writings from his pen which major on the significance of the cross of Christ. This volume brings together a number of Martin's sermons, essays and letters, many of which have not been published since the nineteenth century.

Book Jesus and the Victory of God reissue

Download or read book Jesus and the Victory of God reissue written by N. T. Wright and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 1046 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly anticipated volume, N. T. Wright focuses directly on the historical Jesus: Who was he? What did he say? And what did he mean by it? Wright begins by showing how the questions posed by Albert Schweitzer a century ago remain central today. Then he sketches a profile of Jesus in terms of his prophetic praxis, his subversive stories, the symbols by which he reordered his world, and the answers he gave to the key questions that any world view must address. The examination of Jesus' aims and beliefs, argued on the basis of Jesus' actions and their accompanying riddles, is sure to stimulate heated response. Wright offers a provocative portrait of Jesus as Israel's Messiah who would share and bear the fate of the nation and would embody the long-promised return of Israel's God to Zion.
