Book Boccioni s Materia

Book excerpt: Umberto Boccioni was perhaps the most versatile and impassioned of the Futurists--the literary, political and artistic movement that flourished in Italy during the first half of the twentieth century, proclaiming a revolutionary, spectacular style of life. His masterwork, "Materia," a huge canvas painted during July and August of 1912, depicts the artist's mother seated on the balcony of her apartment at Via Adige, 23, in Milan. Her monumental, sculpted hands sit at the center of the painting, and behind and above her are the rooftops and factory buildings of the Piazza Trento and beyond. The Cubist energy of the composition is enhanced by an open window that reflects rays of light over her, illustrating simultaneous visual impressions of indoors and outdoors. Boccioni's Materia: A Futurist Masterpiece and the European Avant-Garde is organized around a series of themes including the artist's evolution from Divisionism to Futurism, the exchanges between Cubism and Futurism, and the relationship between Boccioni's painting and sculpture. Through an exploration of related paintings by Boccioni, as well as works by his counterparts within the greater European sphere, from Picasso to Duchamp, this exhibition and catalogue demonstrate the pivotal role Boccioni played within the history of Modernism, broadening the current perspective on the artist and, by extension, the Italian Futurism movement. This publication will include drawings, sculptures, period photographs and archival documentation, providing an unprecedented understanding of Boccioni's working process, and the interconnected relationships between the works he executed in diverse media, underlining, for example, his exploration of the fusion of interiors and exteriors, an approach integral to the Futurist conceptualization of spatial relationships and motion. A series of scholarly essays completes the volume.

Book Umberto Boccioni 70 Drawings

Book excerpt: Umberto Boccioni was an prominent Italian painter and sculptor who helped shape the innovative aesthetic of the Futurism movement as one of its most important representatives. Despite his short life, his approach to the dynamism of form and the deconstruction of solid mass guided artists long after his death. From 1902 to 1910 he weaves between Pointillism and Impressionism, and the influence of Giacomo Balla, and Divisionism techniques are evident in early paintings. "The Laugh", 1911, is considered his first truly Futurist work. He had fully parted with Divisionism, and now focused on the sensations derived from his observation of modern life. Beginning in 1912, with "Elasticity" he completed a series of "Dynamism" paintings. In 1914 Boccioni published his book, "Futurist painting and sculpture", which caused a rift between himself and some of his Futurist comrades. With "Horizontal Volumes" in 1915 and the "Portrait of Ferruccio Busoni" in 1916, he completed a full return to figurative painting. In May 1916 Umberto Boccioni was drafted into the Italian Army to fight in World War I, and was thrown from his horse during a cavalry training. He died the following day, aged thirty-three.

Book Futurist Painting Sculpture Plastic Dynamism Umberto Boccioni

Download or read book Futurist Painting Sculpture Plastic Dynamism Umberto Boccioni written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fiery and influential book, available for the first time in English, presents an Italian Futurist's radical ideas about art and architecture 'Futurist Painting Sculpture (Plastic Dynamism)', a truly radical book by Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916), claimed a central position in artistic debates of the 1910s and 1920s, exerting a powerful influence on the Italian Futurist movement as well as on the entire European historical avant-garde, including Dada and Constructivism. Today, Boccioni is best known as an artist whose paintings and sculptures are prized for their revolutionary aesthetic by American and European museums. But 'Futurist Painting Sculpture' demonstrates that he was also the foremost avant-garde theorist of his time. In his distinctive, exhilarating prose style, Boccioni not only articulates his own ideas about the Italian movement's underpinnings and goals but also systematizes the principles expressed in the vast array of manifestos that the Futurists had already produced. Featuring photographs of fifty-one key works and a large selection of manifestos devoted to the visual arts, Boccioni's book established the canon of Italian Futurist art for many years to come. First published in Italian in 1914, 'Futurist Painting Sculpture' has never been available in English-until now.0This edition includes a critical introduction by Maria Elena Versari. Drawing on the extensive Futurist archives at the Getty Research Institute, Versari systematically retraces, for the first time, the evolution of Boccioni's ideas and arguments; his attitude toward contemporary political, racial, philosophical, and scientific debates; and his polemical view of Futurism's role in the development of modern art.

Book excerpt: More than one hundred years after his death ? and almost six years after the publication of the general catalog edited by Maurizio Calvesi and this writer ? Umberto Boccioni continues to surprise scholars and art enthusiasts. The unpublished works identified in the last five and a half years are forty-one, including oil paintings, paper drawings and a sculpture, which are added to the large corpus of known works to testify, once again, to the extraordinary productiveness over a career that lasted less than twenty years. [?] Thanks to the discovery of some preparatory drawings of already known paintings and, in one case, vice versa by tracking a drawing with a similar subject to an unpublished painting, the practice implemented by the artist is confirmed. A practice already evident in the numerous known drawings that can be compared to the oil paintings: Boccioni used to carry out various studies on paper ? from the general compositional layout of the work to individual details ? before picking up his brushes. [?] The discovery of some unpublished works done abroad (in addition to Brazil and Australia) as well as France, Germany and England suggest that a European collection of Boccioni works had already been started, following the circulation of his compositions were presented at the first solo and collective exhibitions of the Futurist group. The activity of the Futurists group outside of Italy from 1912 to 1915 was remarkable. Exhibitions were held in Paris (1912 and 1913), Berlin (1912 and 1913), London (1912 and 1914) as well as in Brussels (1912), Rotterdam (1913), Leipzig (1914), all the way to San Francisco (1915).

Book Umberto Boccioni s States of Mind

Download or read book Umberto Boccioni s States of Mind written by Sonya Shrier and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines Umberto Boccioni's series the States of Mind (1911) and discusses how these works represent a breakthrough in the artist's search to find a pictorial expression for concepts that occupied him throughout his career. The States of Mind exists in four complete iterations each comprised of three images: The Farewells, Those Who Go and Those Who Stay. The first set of oil paintings, begun in late summer of 1911, are in the Divisionist style and are in the collection of the Civica Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan. A set of charcoal and contè drawings on paper, likely completed in the fall of 1911, show the influence of the Symbolist style are in the collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. A second series of oil paintings, also in MoMA's collection, was completed towards the end of 1911. These display an inflection of cubism and were reworked after the artist's trip to Paris in November in the same year. Finally a series of pen and ink drawings based on the second painted version which were then translated into xylographic prints, or woodcuts, for reproduction in the German magazine Der Sturm. Though the States of Mind has been established as one of the most important works in Boccioni's oeuvre and among the most significant in the Futurist movement, an in-depth monographic study on the work has never been written. This thesis looks at the States of Mind in the context of a number of key topics: the influence of the artistic movements Divisonism and Symbolism; the impact of Henri Bergson's philosophies; the significance of the railway station setting; and the intended ordering of the States of Mind's three panels. Through this study a more nuanced understanding of this seminal work will emerge.
