Book The Graduate Record Examination GRE as a Predictor of Success at the Naval Postgraduate School

Download or read book The Graduate Record Examination GRE as a Predictor of Success at the Naval Postgraduate School written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naval Postgraduate School is conducting a three-year study to de termine whether or not to use the Graduate Record Examination as a selection tool/admissions standard. Students are currently selected based on their professional military performance and their undergraduate grades, math and science exposure. This thesis examines a sample of 198 students who took the Graduate Record Examination after arrival at the school and who have completed six quarters of study. The results indicate that the Graduate Record Examination is a much stronger predictor than the currently used undergraduate measures (Academic Profile Code). When the Graduate Record Examination scores are combined with undergraduate grade point average and the officer's age, an excellent predictor is developed. The thesis contains, in addition to descriptive information and regression results, a prediction equation which may be used by Navy selection committees in determining whether or not an officer will succeed at the Naval Postgraduate School. Thesis. (SDW).

Book Evaluation of GRE Graduate Record Examination Data an Experiment at NPS

Download or read book Evaluation of GRE Graduate Record Examination Data an Experiment at NPS written by Donald R. Barr and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Naval Officers reporting to the Naval Postgraduate School as students are required to take the graduate record examination (GRE). An analysis of the GRE scores obtained to date and of other factors, such as age, sex, years since receiving a baccalaureate degree, and Academic Profile Code (APC) scores was performed. The analysis was based on data for approximately 320 students who have completed at least three quarters at NPS. Two measures of student academic performance were considered: graduate grade point average and total grade point average. The analyses performed are not exhaustive; other analyses could well provide further insights and other variables might be included in future analyses. Additionally, the sample size of tested students who have completed several quarters of work at NPS will grow. Regression analysis was used to investigate which components of the GRE and APC scores (together with age and years since graduation) are important in predicting academic performance as measured by grade point averages (GPA's). In addition, several multivariate analysis methods were used in an attempt to find predictors of marginal academic performance (GPA's less than 3.0).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard R. Gifford and Linda C. Wing Standardized testing has become a ubiquitous feature of American life. As a major source of information for reducing uncertainty in the alJocation of merit based educational, training, and employment opportunities, testing affects the life chances of individuals. Moreover, testing inOuences the way in which our societyjudgesitselfandprovides for ourcollective future. Test scores may determine a child's admission to lcindergarten and promotion to the fIrst grade. Most states award the high school diploma only ifa student has passed a minimum competency test. Major institutions of higher education typically require applicants to supplement their records of academic achievement with scores on college admissions tests. In the labor market, as a condition of employment or assignment to training programs, more and more employers are requiring workers to sit for personnel selection tests. Additionally, it has become commonplace to use test scores to calibrate our national sociopolitical condition and our capacity to compete with other countries in the global economy. In short, with increasing frequency and intensity, scores on examinations that purport to be objective and precise measures of individual knowledge, abilities, and potential are playing a critical role in the opportunity marketplace. Similarly, test scores are exercising growing influence in assessments of our social and economic institutions and in policy decisions about the relative invesunents that should be made in each. In all these instantiations, test scores are at the center of high-stakes decision making about the future of individuals and of the nation itself.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of communications management students was conducted using a specially constructed biographical questionnaire, the Strong Vocational Interest Blank, the Graduate Record Examination and undergraduate academic performance to develop a procedure for selecting U.S. naval officers for the Communications Management curriculum at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. The variables selected for predicting academic success were: third and fourth year undergraduate grade-point averages, undergraduate major in engineering (yes or no), and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy (yes or no). Tables are presented to facilitate the use of the method developed. The report also summarizes the relationship to two criteria, academic performance and satisfaction, of all the instruments and information used and recommends the direction of future research.
