France of her Egyptian obelisk, which once adorned ancient Thebes, and is now erected in the midst of her capital, where it is the most attractive object to the admiration of travellers. Unable to penetrate into the future, man loves to inquire into the past, to interrogate his most remote ancestors, and to learn from their experience how to pursue good and eschew evil.
