Book Handbook of Research on Resource Management and the Struggle for Water Sustainability in Africa

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Resource Management and the Struggle for Water Sustainability in Africa written by Nojiyeza, Innocent Simphiwe and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to water and sanitation remains a critical challenge in various countries in Africa. The crisis remains the crisis of governance rather than the physical and economic scarcity. In most countries, water is realized as a human right and subsidies are provided for the indigent households. The tricky issue in rural areas remains an issue of access that is often linked to willingness and ability to pay for the installation and daily consumption. The Handbook of Research on Resource Management and the Struggle for Water Sustainability in Africa presents practical examples of integrated water resources management (IWRM) implementation in African countries. It further addresses the contemporary issues of alternative energy as part of climate change mitigation and utilizes case studies to examine how communities adapt to climate change. Covering topics such as climate justice, ecological governance, and political ecology, this major reference work is a dynamic resource for government officials, sociologists, climate scientists, activists, students and educators of higher education, academicians, and researchers in the fields of social sciences, government, developmental studies, international relations, and political science.

Book Advances in water research

Book excerpt: Water scarcity has become one of the greatest challenges facing humankind today. Its scarcity is compounded by climate change and increasing demand from a growing population. In South Africa, over 60% of the available freshwater resources are used in agriculture, mainly in irrigated agriculture. There is an urgent need to promote sustainable irrigation technologies that optimize food production without increasing water applied and with positive environmental spinoffs. Sustainable irrigation technologies and practices could enhance water use efficiency (WUE) and productivity in agriculture and reduce environmental burdens, including energy use. This chapter highlights some of the innovative irrigation practices and technologies that enhance food production and, at the same time, reduce water use in agriculture. The chapter broadly discusses WUE and water productivity (WP) in irrigated agriculture from engineering and agronomic perspectives. The chapter further highlights some of the environmental impacts of irrigation expansion and the possible solutions. We further provide the importance of accurate spatial information on irrigated areas to inform policy on irrigation expansion. The Water Research Commission (WRC) of South Africa has been spearheading research on the sustainable use of water for the past 50 years as part of its research agenda. In Ting, D. S.-K.; O’Brien, P. Book Linking Precaution to Adaptive Co Management to Adapt Rural Water Resources to Climate Change in Ghana

Download or read book Linking Precaution to Adaptive Co Management to Adapt Rural Water Resources to Climate Change in Ghana written by Kenneth Mensah (O.) and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is a topical issue in water management in Africa, because of the complex challenges it confronts institutional actors with in order to respond to these threats. The research undertook an institutional analysis to understand capacities for collaboration, adaptation and precaution in development of water supply systems. Four coastal villages in Ghana were selected as case studies to assess the capacities of institutions to respond and how these deal with existing and future climate change induced sea level rise conditions. The findings show local perceptions are consistent with available evidence of current water salinization vulnerabilities in the area due to rapid coastal erosion and inundation. However, sea level rise will exacerbate the existing problems by causing more frequent storm surges and extension of tidal regimes further inland. It is concluded that: (i) There is a commitment to adaptation but no clear intent of precaution. Local and district institutions adopt incremental (traditional) responses because they lack the requisite capacities to adapt to the scale and complexity involved. Non-traditional externally initiated (International and national institutions) large scale projects have potentials to ameliorate future impacts. However, they are mainly adaptive by intent with precaution only implicit by default of the scale of these developments. (ii) The governance structure presents perplexing constraints and opportunities for institutional collaboration for adaptation action. It is top down, characterized by weak internal capacities, asymmetrical power distribution and poorly coordinated. This undermines collaboration and facilitation of adaptive capacities. Conversely, it shows some robustness and redundancy being multi-layered where collaboration, especially with foreign agencies, provides opportunities for large scale interventions. (iii) Long term adaptation would require certain socio-ecological restructuring, along with a comprehensive and practical climate change adaptation strategy at all scales, where the precautionary principle is integral.

Book Participation and Institutional Reform in the Water Sector in Zimbabwe

Download or read book Participation and Institutional Reform in the Water Sector in Zimbabwe written by Oniward Svubure and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation which has become a famous orthodoxy in recent years among development agencies is the subject of this research on stakeholders in the water sector in Zimbabwe. Focus is on the participation of rural community members in smallholder formal and informal irrigation activities in their locale, and their representation in the sub-catchment and catchment levels respectively. A framework of analysis was constructed using evidence from the study to help us understand what shapes the participation of community members in irrigation WUAs in a selected small catchment of the larger Mzingwane catchment in southwest Zimbabwe. The study recommends the adoption of the micro-catchment level as the lowest tier for integrated water management, a union for smallholder irrigation WUAs and the provision of technology to leverage the participation of more community members in productive water use. Besides, to improve the framework analytical power, its review to include the role of politics and the wider notion of representational democracy is also recommended.
