Download or read book The Lufthansa Heist written by Henry Hill and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inside story—from the organizer himself--of the largest unrecovered cash haul in history. This full account brings readers behind the heist memorialized in Goodfellas, a crime that has baffled law enforcement for decades. From Henry Hill himself, The Lufthansa Heist is the last book he worked on before his 2012 death. On December 11, 1978, a daring armed robbery rocked Kennedy Airport, resulting in the largest unrecovered cash haul in world history, totaling six million dollars. The perpetrators were never apprehended and thirteen people connected to the crime were murdered in homicides that, like the crime itself, remain unsolved to this day. The burglary has fascinated the public for years, dominating headlines around the globe due to the story’s unending ravel of mysteries that baffled the authorities. One of the organizers of the sensational burglary, Henry Hill, who passed away in 2012, in collaboration with Daniel Simone, has penned an unprecedented “tell-all” about the robbery with never-before-unveiled details, particulars only known to an insider. In 2013, this infamous criminal act again flared up in the national news when five reputed gangsters were charged in connection to the robbery. This latest twist lends the project an extraordinary sense of timing, and the legal proceedings of the newly arrested suspects will unfold over the next year, continuing to keep the Lufthansa topic in the news.

Book Impact of Diet on Learning Memory and Cognition

Download or read book Impact of Diet on Learning Memory and Cognition written by Amy Claire Reichelt and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in food composition and availability have contributed to the dramatic increase in obesity over the past 30-40 years in developed and, increasingly, in developing countries. The modern diet now contains many foods that are rich in saturated fat and refined sugar. People who eat excessive amounts of this diet are not only likely to become overweight, even obese, develop metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, some forms of cancer, but also undergo a more rapid rate of normal age-related cognitive decline and more rapid progression of neurological diseases such as dementia. A central problem is why people persist in consuming this diet in spite of its adverse health effects and when alternative food choices are available. As high fat / high sugar foods are inherently rewarding, eating for pleasure, like taking psychoactive drugs, can modulate reward neurocircuitry, causing changes in responsiveness to reward-predicting stimuli and incentive motivation. Indeed, the excessive ingestion in modern societies and the resulting obesity epidemic may be viewed as a form of food addiction. Thus, a diet high in palatable foods is proposed to impact upon reward systems in the brain, modulating appetitive learning and altering reward thresholds. Impairments in other forms of cognition have been associated with obesity, and these have a rapid onset. The hippocampus appears to be particularly vulnerable to the detrimental effects of high fat and high sugar diets. Recent research has shown that as little as one week of exposure to a high fat, high sugar diet leads to impairments in place but not object recognition memory in the rat. Excess sugar alone had similar effects, and the detrimental effects of diet consumption was linked to increased inflammatory markers in the hippocampus, a critical region involved in memory. Furthermore, obesity-related inflammatory changes have also been described in the human brain that may lead to memory impairments. These memory deficits may contribute to pathological eating behaviour through changes in the amount consumed and timing of eating. The aim of this eBook is to present up-to-date information about the impact of diet and diet-induced obesity on reward driven learning, memory and cognition, encompassing both animal and human literature, and also potential therapeutic targets to attenuate such deficits.

Book The Cheater s Diet

Download or read book The Cheater s Diet written by Marissa Lippert and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everybody cheats. On diets, that is. Marissa Lippert, twice voted one of New York's best nutritionists, has seen her clients cheat and give up, again and again-so she created an eight-week weight loss program that starts with cheating. As her thousands of success stories show, it's a matter of accepting the cheats, building them into the week, and moving on. In eight weeks, Lippert's clients lose up to twenty pounds, and with her new book everyone else can, too. Part I of The Cheater's Diet helps readers map out their social calendar, gym time, food shopping time, and cooking time. Each week has a food plan and fun recipes, most of which take less than twenty minutes to prepare, as well as an illustrative "cheating" lesson or two. Part II is the sneaky part, in which Lippert shows when, where, and how to cheat. There are two kinds of cheating: accidental and purposeful. For the former, Lippert shows readers how to make up for too much fat, sugar, meat, or booze. And for the latter, she takes a proactive approach, with topics like "Extra Baggage: How to Compensate for Travel Food, Fast Food, and Eating Out" Throughout, readers will learn how to eat healthfully and well. The Cheater's Diet is a sassy, motivating, and effective plan for those who want to have their chocolate and drink wine, too.
