Book excerpt: Within one year of the conquest of Spania (AD 711), the Muslim conquerors struck coins, with legends in Latin, demonstrating the tenets of their faith: 'In the Name of God; there is no deity other than God, Alone, without compeer'. This proclamation was followed by a bilingual mint, drawn from the Qur'an: 'He is God, Unique, God Everlasting, He who has not begotten, and who has not been begotten, and equal to Him is not any one' (Qur'an 112). Then solely in Arabic, the coins replaced the legend Spania with al-Andalus. As the Christian population of Al-Andalus became increasingly arabicised, the need for translating their sacred scriptures into Arabic undoubtedly ensued. It is interesting to note that article 26 of the Fourth Council of Toledo (AD 633) had decreed that when priests were assigned to their districts (parishes), the bishops were to provide them each with a copy of the Gospels so that, having mastered the teachings of the Gospels, the priests would not err in the application of God's law and intent. An Arabic translation of the Scriptures - particularly the Gospels - would meet that requirement and satisfy a growing need of the priesthood and the faithful laity - non-conversant in Latin - to read and hear the sacred text in the language that they comprehended best.

Numerous passages of the Bible have foretold the coming of Prophet Muhammad, the revelation of the holy Quran, Imam Ali, Imam Hussain, and Imam Mahdi from Mecca. Many early Islamic events were prophesied in the Bible but they all were hidden and lost in the translations. Moses, David, Solomon, Isaiah, John the Baptist, Jesus, Peter, and many other Biblical Prophets have talked about Islam, and they have foretold Prophet Muhammad and his household by name, in numerous places. This book will take you on a journey uncovering the truth in the Bible, as well as the Avesta of Zoroaster, which was written over 3000 years ago.

  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book Jonah written by Jack M. Sasson and published by Anchor Bible. This book was released on 1990 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were Jonah's experiences true to the history of ancient Israel? Were they meant to be read comically, philosophically, allegorically, symbolically, or realistically? And is God godly when acting beyond the comprehension of prophets, let alone ordinary human beings? These issues, and many more, are thoughtfully considered in this meticulously detailed and insightful translation of the original Hebrew text of Jonah as created by Jewish authorities during the second half of the first millennium B.C.E. In these profound and enduring tales, realistic events and miraculous incidents merge, and we never have to wait long to witness the power of God's love or wrath. One of the twelve prophets, Jonah faced more challenges in a short span of time than any other biblical hero. He went to sea and nearly drowned in the belly of a great fish. On land, Jonah journeyed east to Nineveh, where his mission was to spread the word of God in a city plagued by evil. He was tested by God at every tum. But even during his darkest hours, his faith never wavered and through all the tumult, he always listened for the comforting voice of the Lord. Author Jack M. Sasson employs the very latest information in biblical scholarship to interpret the many nuances in Jonah's seemingly simple story. Providing Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Aramaic, and, occasionally, Syriac and Arabic translations, this work is an exciting addition to the world-acclaimed Anchor Bible commentaries.
