Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of Buddha was an 1894 book by Paul Carus. It was modeled on the New Testament and told the story of Buddha through parables. It was an important tool in introducing Buddhism to the west and is used as a teaching tool by some Asian sects.Carus believed that the modern world required a new Religion of Science. By the 1890s, inspired by the meetings and conversations at the Parliament of the World's Religions in 1893, he had decided that Buddhism was the closest faith to his ideal and created The Gospel of Buddha to popularize the religion in the West. The work was assembled from existing English translations of Buddhists texts, with significant amendments and reworkings. His selection of texts favoured Buddhism as a philosophy without any supernatural elements. While criticized by contemporary scholars, this interpretation proved popular in the West. It proved a popular success, with a number of reprintings. It also influenced the development of Buddhist modernism in East Asia, notably in a Japanese translation of the book by D. T. Suzuki.(ILLUSTRATED)

Book The Buddhic Essence

Download or read book The Buddhic Essence written by Elizabeth Clare Prophet and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2011-01-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We all have the seed, or “essence,” of Buddha within us, and because we do we have the potential to become a Buddha. The journey to Buddhahood is not a journey measured in distance or time. Its markers are self-knowledge and a yearning for something within that beckons the soul to take the next step on her spiritual journey. Drawing on traditional and modern Buddhist teachings and stories, Elizabeth Clare Prophet gently traces the pathway to Buddhic enlightenment. She outlines the stages on that path and describes the ten virtues we are meant to perfect along the way, offering insightful tips for developing them. She also explores Buddhist teaching on awakening the heart and mind and explains how Buddhist mantras help us overcome obstacles to spiritual growth while increasing wisdom, compassion, forgiveness and joy. Includes a section on mantras for wisdom and compassion. The Buddhic Essence is the second book in the author's Mystical Paths of the World’s Religions series. "

Book The Making of Buddhist Modernism

Download or read book The Making of Buddhist Modernism written by David L. McMahan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal of Buddhist literature and scholarly writing about Buddhism of the past 150 years reflects, and indeed constructs, a historically unique modern Buddhism, even while purporting to represent ancient tradition, timeless teaching, or the "essentials" of Buddhism. This literature, Asian as well as Western, weaves together the strands of different traditions to create a novel hybrid that brings Buddhism into alignment with many of the ideologies and sensibilities of the post-Enlightenment West. In this book, David McMahan charts the development of this "Buddhist modernism." McMahan examines and analyzes a wide range of popular and scholarly writings produced by Buddhists around the globe. He focuses on ideological and imaginative encounters between Buddhism and modernity, for example in the realms of science, mythology, literature, art, psychology, and religious pluralism. He shows how certain themes cut across cultural and geographical contexts, and how this form of Buddhism has been created by multiple agents in a variety of times and places. His position is critical but empathetic: while he presents Buddhist modernism as a construction of numerous parties with varying interests, he does not reduce it to a mistake, a misrepresentation, or fabrication. Rather, he presents it as a complex historical process constituted by a variety of responses -- sometimes trivial, often profound -- to some of the most important concerns of the modern era.

Book Men Who Have Walked With God Being The Story Of Mysticism Through The Ages Told In The Biographies Of Representative Seers And Saints With Excerpts From Their Writings And Sayings

Download or read book Men Who Have Walked With God Being The Story Of Mysticism Through The Ages Told In The Biographies Of Representative Seers And Saints With Excerpts From Their Writings And Sayings written by Sheldon Cheney and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheldon Warren Cheney was an American author and art critic, born in Berkeley, California. Cheney was one of the most significant pro-modernist theatre and art critics of the early twentieth century. He helped introduce European modernist practices in theatre to the United States. 'Men Who Have Walked with God', traces mysticism through history, concentrating on eleven men from Lao-Tse and the Buddha to Jacob Boehme and William Blake. This is a book about certain artists and poets and spiritual prophets who have been close to God in the special mystic way. They have known the experience of union with God. The writers and artists among them have believed, in some cases, that their writings and pictures were composed as if by divine dictation; or they have thought of art as a special mode of revelation of the rhythm or vital order of the universe.

Book A Cultural History of the Senses in the Age of Empire

Download or read book A Cultural History of the Senses in the Age of Empire written by Constance Classen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 19th century was a time of new sensory experiences and modes of perception. The raucous mechanical intensity of the train and the factory vied for attention with the dazzling splendour of department stores and world fairs. Colonization and trade carried European sensations and sensibilities to the world and, in turn, flooded the West with exotic sights and savours. Urban stench became a matter of urgent public concern. Photography created a compelling alternate reality accessible only to the eye. At the turn of the 20th century, the telephone and the radio isolated and extended the sense of hearing and electrical networks spread their webs throughout cities. These novel experiences were reflected in contemporary art and literature, which strove for new ways to express modern sensibilities. A Cultural History of the Senses in the Age of Empire brings together a group of eminent historians to explore the aesthetic, cultural and political formation of the senses during a period of momentous change. A Cultural History of the Senses in the Age of Empire presents essays on the following topics: the social life of the senses; urban sensations; the senses in the marketplace; the senses in religion; the senses in philosophy and science; medicine and the senses; the senses in literature; art and the senses; and sensory media.
