Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Light of the Great War The great experience through which we have passed has also added a new sense of reality and worth to our appreciation of the Bible. It, too, was born from fierce and long struggle; it is amazing how much of the temper of the war and of the constructive purpose fol lowing it is reflected in the Scriptures. To define the great subjects that have been thrust forward during the last five years, to show how the vital documents of the new literature bear upon them, and chiefly to bring the Bible into use as a source of text and subject and illustration is the purpose of this volume. Book The Gospel in the Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel in the Gospels Classic Reprint written by William Porcher Dubose and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Book The World and the Gospel Classic Reprint

Download or read book The World and the Gospel Classic Reprint written by J. H. Oldham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World and the Gospel As the months of war have passed, the conviction has grown in my mind that if the missionary move ment is to maintain its place among the many urgent tasks which will claim our attention on the restoration of peace, and to accomplish its work in the new world into which we are being brought, it is necessary for us to go back to first principles and take a fresh hold of the fundamental truths on which the whole undertaking rests. I believe that if we do this we shall find in the missionary idea, truly apprehended and heartily embraced, the liberation and inspiration that we need if we are to succeed in the difficult tasks before us in days to come. To meet the moral and spiritual needs, which in the light of the war are so patent and real, the Church requires a more passionate, exultant, venturesome faith in the Gospel entrusted to it, and the one sure way in which we can learn anew what the Gospel means is boldly to assert its right to rule the whole life of the world. Book The Sword of Christ and the World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sword of Christ and the World War Classic Reprint written by Perry James Stackhouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sword of Christ and the World War The World War has forced many new, pressing, and perplexing problems upon the preacher. To him has been intrusted the gospel of reconciliation, of peace and good will to men, and how to preach that gospel in a world of war when nation is divided against nation and a man's foes are found even in his own national household, is by no means easy for him to determine. He may be successful in evading or ignoring the problems of the higher criticism and the doctrine of evolution; but war, with its terrible, insistent, and heart-searching questions, is a brutal, stubborn fact that must be met and answered. Let it be granted that the preacher has fallen upon difficult days. New questions which go to the very core of religion and ethics are hurled at him. A hundred new demands are being made upon his time, and when he is asked to give up his service for the advertising of liberty loans or for a discus sion of the problems of food conservation, he is sometimes in doubt as to whether the calls of coun try are the calls of God. This book, in part, is based upon addresses given by the writer to members of his congregation and other audiences, on some of the questions raised by the war. The material, however, has been revised and rearranged, and four of the eight chapters are new. It is an attempt to interpret the gospel and the duties of Christian citizenship in an age of to the people who wait upon our ministry. Book Christ and War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christ and War Classic Reprint written by William Ernest Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and War The author, in common with all who desire peace between the nations, owes a debt of gratitude to Norman Angell. For, whether one agrees or disagrees with his arguments in The Great Illusion, it is undeniable that he has brought the question of peace and war prominently and freshly before the public in this and other countries. 80 that peace advocates no longer speak to deaf ears. Hitherto they have found the public unwilling to listen to them, and inclined to view their theories as a mild form of insanity. The Great Illusion has changed this attitude by showing that between civilised states war can bring no gain to the victor, and, under certain circumstances, may damage him even more than the vanquished. At once per petual peace has become an ideal which the practical man can recognise as capable of realisation. The Christian and humanitarian peace advocacy claimed that war is wrong and should therefore be abolished. At this the practical man shook his head and said, War is certainly horrible; it is bad; but it is necessary. It is part of the nature of things; you can't abolish it. Now, if Norman Angell is right in his main contentions, it is no longer possible to say that war cannot be abolished. For it is clearly to the advantage of all men to abolish it; all that stands in the way is human ignorance and prejudice and in every department of life these are constantly being overcome. Book excerpt: Madman, tyrant, animal—history has given Adolf Hitler many names. In Mein Kampf (My Struggle), often called the Nazi bible, Hitler describes his life, frustrations, ideals, and dreams. Born to an impoverished couple in a small town in Austria, the young Adolf grew up with the fervent desire to become a painter. The death of his parents and outright rejection from art schools in Vienna forced him into underpaid work as a laborer. During the First World War, Hitler served in the infantry and was decorated for bravery. After the war, he became actively involved with socialist political groups and quickly rose to power, establishing himself as Chairman of the National Socialist German Worker's party. In 1924, Hitler led a coalition of nationalist groups in a bid to overthrow the Bavarian government in Munich. The infamous Munich "Beer-hall putsch" was unsuccessful, and Hitler was arrested. During the nine months he was in prison, an embittered and frustrated Hitler dictated a personal manifesto to his loyal follower Rudolph Hess. He vented his sentiments against communism and the Jewish people in this document, which was to become Mein Kampf, the controversial book that is seen as the blue-print for Hitler's political and military campaign. In Mein Kampf, Hitler describes his strategy for rebuilding Germany and conquering Europe. It is a glimpse into the mind of a man who destabilized world peace and pursued the genocide now known as the Holocaust.

Download or read book The Gospel of the Kingdom Vol 7 written by Josiah Strong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of the Kingdom, Vol. 7: January, 1915 Thus lives were lost as the direct result of nineteen wars, an average of lives to a war. And wars are growing more costly in life. The Russo Japanese war, a comparatively short one, cost lives - more than twice the average loss by war through the century. The recent Balkan wars, lasting practically but a few months, are said to have cost more than lives. The savagery of civilization is progressing. The present war will undoubtedly be the most costly in life ever fought. Who shall count the indirect human cost? How many men have carried through life a living death as the result of wars? How many have been crippled disabled, incapacitated? How many Widows, how many orphans, has war created! How many homes have been destroyed; how many families blasted! Let those count them for their beads who worship militarism and glorify it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
