Book excerpt: These poems were collected and edited at Solentiname in Nicaragua in 1977 by the Venezuelan poet and workshop originator Mayra Jimenez. The Solentiname colony was established on an island at the southern end of Lake Nicaragua in 1965. Father Ernesto Cardenal lived there for 12 years celebrating the Mass, teaching the Gospel, and encouraging the islanders to create paintings and poetry. Then came the Sandinista revolution, in which Father Cardenal participated. The poems written by the children and adults of Solentiname were saved, collected, and finally published in Managua in 1980. Father Ernesto Cardenal decided in the middle 1970s that revolution in Nicaragua could not be peacefully achieved. As a result, he occupied a difficult vocation, as priest, poet, and revolutionary. Eventually, with the success of the revolution, he was appointed Minister of Culture in 1979.

Inevitably, as Nicaragua and the Politics of Utopia demonstrates, reality casts a shadow and the community must look to the next leader. As an impoverished state, second only to Haiti in the Americas, Nicaragua has been the scene of cyclical attempts and failures at modern development. Author Daniel Chavez investigates the cultural and ideological bases of what he identifies as the three decisive movements of social reinvention in Nicaragua: the regimes of the Somoza family of much of the early to mid-twentieth century; the governments of the Sandinista party; and the present-day struggle to adapt to the global market economy. For each era, Chavez reveals the ways Nicaraguan popular culture adapted and interpreted the new political order, shaping, critiquing, or amplifying the regime's message of stability and prosperity for the people. All four canonical Gospels declare that the Torah and the Prophets and the Psalms mysteriously prefigure Jesus. The author of the Fourth Gospel states this claim succinctly: in his narrative, Jesus declares, "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me" (John 5:46). Yet modern historical criticism characteristically judges that the New Testament's christological readings of Israel's Scripture misrepresent the original sense of the texts; this judgment forces fundamental questions to be asked: Why do the Gospel writers read the Scriptures in such surprising ways? Are their readings intelligible as coherent or persuasive interpretations of the Scriptures? Does Christian faith require the illegitimate theft of someone else's sacred texts?
