Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in All Lands, 1898 The Bible was my companion, and, as never before, its truths seemed new and di vinely illuminated. My stateroom was my sanctuary where I communed with God and found relief from the perplexities and trials that assailed me. The occurrence of mv weekly fast and my times of secret prayer brought to me joys unknown before. From the first it had been matter of serious concern with me that before entering on my work in China everything in me not in har mony with the divine will and purpose might be removed, that my heart might be filled with love to God, that he would give me the perfect equipment for my mission which only the Holy Spirit can impart, and that he would prepare the way before me. These supplications were not in vain. 'i received the assurance that God did take full possession of my heart, that he did ap prove me as one of his missionaries to the Chinese, and that his presence would go with me, preparing the way before me. This blessed assurance was given me Octo ber 24, 1847, while wrestling with God in my stateroom. A light such as I had never seen shone into my soul, a joy never before experienced filled my heart, a peace that passeth all understanding took possession of me, and to this day I have never felt any serious doubts in regard to the subject. Blessed be his holy name! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Earth's fields the reapers wait, And low much golden grain is bending now So low that fallen, soiled, and stained it lies Because no hand has gleaned The harvests ripe Invite thy love, thy prayer, thy toil. Before Thine eye and near thine hand the burdened plains Are spread. Thy zeal for souls, thine earnest zeal He asks, who loved and lived and bled and died Salvation to secure for thee and thine. The cost, so great. He freely paid; endured 83101117, war! 5t0rg The cross; despised the shame: so deep the joy He found in pain and travail of his soul For sons of men - for thee! Blood-purchased are these waiting fields and sealed His own with all the weight of crushing shame He bore for thee and them. It has survived the shocks of eighteen centuries, and now it sways more human hearts than ever. In our own time controversies have broken over it like fierce summer atoms, which only brighten and enrich the face of the landscape they threaten to ruin. For a little while the theory of evolution was confidently affirmed to have shaken a strong ground for our belief in the Bible; it was soon made clear that it had only strengthened it. For fifty years unsparing criticism played upon the historical Christ it only brought him nearer and made his glory more visible to men. Hostile investigation has contributed to our knowledge of the New Testament and has left its credit and authority unimpaired, and now the Old Testament is passing through the same fire. There were thirty-three names on the roll, and all except two were present. Eighteen are Hindu boys, whose parents wor ship idols, and all of these had a necklace on with a tiny brass charm in front. The rest, among whom was one girl, were children of native Christians. You would have liked to have seen them sitting on tiny square rush mats on the earthen floor of the chapel. It is only a thatched roof, you know, held up by strong posts. Some of the boys had slates, and others wrote on slips of palm leaves. The bigger scholars had each a packet of books tied up in a piece of cloth. After a few sentences in dictation, questions in arith metic. And in the Catechism, I said, Now, how many know the Lord's Prayer? A tall boy, a Hindu, with his necklace on such as I have said, stood up, and proceeded to lead the whole school, sentence by sentence, without a single slip, right through Our Father. Sahib, said a Christian brother, as he saw how pleased I was at this, Dino here knows and teaches the Ten Commandments. Until 1840 no footing was gained for the Gospel upon celestial soil. Not until 1860 was it pos sible to penetrate to the interior, and not yet has gravest peril to life from infuriated mobs passed away. After about a generation of comparative freedom for evangelizing effort something substantial and encouraging in the shape of results can be named. A few limited sections have been fairly well supplied with opportunities for hearing the word of life. At least to some slight extent much of the Eighteen Provinces, as well as Mon golia and Manchuria, have been visited by the heralds of salvation, though Thibet, with its square miles and inhabitants, still keeps its gates shut and barred. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in Its Native Land The gospel gives us the full picture of the earthly life of our Lord, and it is our duty to read it with a pure and sincere heart as well as a simple mind. In order to fully understand the complete simplicity of the gospel it is almost necessary to live, for a short time, in the land where it was spoken, and learn the manners and customs of the native people. The cities and villages, the plains and mountains, lakes and rivers every corner still represents and illustrates the earthly life of our Lord and the words spoken by Him. For this reason thousands of people visit the Holy Land every year. Many books have been written to help those who cannot come. The majority of these contain valuable information. But the great majority lack that simplicity which is essential to the ready grasp of the average reader, and for the most part illustrations are omitted, these adding so much to the understanding of pen descriptions. Its exist ence in a unity nearly perfect politically sets at defiance most of our modern theories on the subject of national union. It has no unity of language; there are four tongues in its Parliament. It is not united in religion: the people are both Catholic and Protestant, and the ardent controversies of former times have, if not tires, at least live ashes still burning. They are not of one race three great races are represented. And the Italian Swiss is an Italian, the french-swiss is a Frenchman, and the German isa German, in all except those feelings and mental traits which go to make up that mysterious human modification which we call national character. This character is found alike in Italian, Frenchman, and German, and alike also in Catholic and Protestant.
