Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. John: The Authorised Version With Introduction and Notes In examining the indirect evidence which the fourth Gospel furnishes as to its authorship, it will be most convenient, as well as most satisfactory, to consider the available materials in relation to successive questions which become more and more definite as we proceed. How far then can we infer from the book itself, with more or less certainty, that the author was, or was not, a Jew, a Jew of Palestine, an eye-witness, an Apostle, and, last of all, St John, the son Of Zebedee? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. John: With Introduction and Notes Like the rest of the disciples, John went back to his home and work. He was on the lake with his father and brother and their partners, Simon and Andrew, that eventful morning when Jesus appeared, preached to the people from the deck of Simon's boat, gave him the remarkable haul of fishes in his net, and then called him and the other three to follow Him. How long after the incident by the Jordan this second call took place we cannot say; but it decided conclusively for John, as for the others, his future as a fisher of men, Matt. Iv. 18 ff. Mark i. 16 fit; Luke v. I - I I. The ascendancy which Christ had already gained over these receptive youths is to be ex plained, however, not by the events of this morning, but by the events of those of that earlier time by the river Jordan. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. John: Authorized Version, With Introduction and Notes If, now, we approach the matter of authorship with clear minds, unpossessed by prejudice in favour of any particular theory, and at the same time confident that an ordinarily simple method of investigation will suffice for the attain ment of a definite result, what course shall we adopt? The first point to be settled, surely, is the account which the book gives of itself. What does it say or imply concerning the writer from whose pen it came? That inquiry is the obvious starting-point, and to that inquiry we will now give the brief reply which is all it needs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. John How far does the Fourth Gospel contain a credible record concerning the historic Jesus Christ? This is the cardinal question on which a critical view Of the Fourth Gospel must hinge. The living interest which Christian theology takes in a problem Of literary criticism, like this Johannine Problem, is rooted in the desire of Christendom for the fullest and most exact knowledge possible of the historic life and ministry of Jesus. Even if the Fourth Gospel contains no trustworthy records Of the history of Jesus, or if the possible elements of sound tradition in it cannot be clearly distinguished from the untrustworthy matter around them, it must still retain a high historic value as a precious document of sub-apostolic Christianity; it retains its value for the soul, as a treasury Of the deepest Christian thought and meditation. But it loses in that case the highest historic value Of all, which would attach to an authentic document concerning the history Of Jesus Himself, an authentic record Of Jesus' own words. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. John: Chapters I. To VIII MY two texts both refer to John the Baptist. One of them is the Evangelist's account Of him, the other is our Lord's eulogium upon him. The latter of my texts, as the Revised Version Shows, would be more properly rendered, He was a lamp rather than He was a light, ' and the contrast between the two words, the 'light' and 'the lamps, ' is my theme. I gather all that I would desire to say into three points: that Light' and its witnesses; the underived Light and the kindled lamps the undying Light and the lamps that go out. I. First of all, then, the contrast suggested to us is between that Light and its witnesses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Holy Gospel According to Saint John Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Holy Gospel According to Saint John Classic Reprint written by John Mcintyre and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Gospel According to Saint John T. Augustine said of St. John's Gospel, They are deep words that are spoken by him, not random words, nor such as may be easily understood. To speak clearly on such deep doctrine, especially to the young and with brevity, is no easy task; and even when one's best has been done, great attention is required on the part of the reader. If, when that attention has been given, much of what is here written still remains obscure, I will not join with the Saint in saying, He that is not able to receive it, let him not charge it on me, but on his own dulness, but I do join with the Saint in saying, If any one may not have understood because I have not declared it as I ought to have declared it, let him excuse the weakness of man. To keep the volume within reasonable limits I have omitted all formal mention of many disputed points. For information on such I must refer the reader to fuller com mentaries. Those most used in the present work were the commentaries of Knabenbauer and Meyer. The chief sources of the Introduction were Kaulen's Einlez'tzmg, Cornely's I ntroductio, Batiffol's Six Leeons, the 'intro ductions' of Salmon and Davidson. The grammatical hints will be made clear by a reference to Beelen's Grammatz'ca Greecitatis Novi Testamenti and to Burton's N ew Testament Moods and Tenses. Book The Gospel of St John Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel of St John Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Marcus Dods and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of St. John, Vol. 1 of 2 In order to read the Gospel of St. John with some intelligence, it is necessary to understand its purpose and its plan. For in the whole range of literature there is no composition which is a more perfect work of art, or which more rigidly excludes whatever does not subserve its main end. From the first word to the last there is no paragraph, sentence, or expression which is out of its place, or with which we could dispense. Part hangs together with part in perfect balance. The sequence may at times be obscure, but sequence there always is. The relevancy of this or that remark may not at first sight be apparent, but irrelevancy is impossible to this writer. The object which the Evangelist had in view in writing this Gospel we are not left to find out for ourselves. He explicitly says that his purpose in writing was to promote the belief that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God" (chap. xx. 31). This purpose, he judges, he will best accomplish, not by writing an essay, nor by framing an abstract argument in advocacy of the claims of Jesus, but by reproducing in his Gospel those manifestations of His glory which elicited faith in the first disciples and in others.
