Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Calf, Vol. 1: A Novel 'Where is Miss Palliser?' inquired Miss Pew, in that awful voice of hers, at which the classroom trembled, as at unexpected thunder. A murmur ran along the desks, from girl to girl, and then some one, near that end of the long room which was sacred to Miss Pew and her lieutenants, said that Miss Palliser was not in the class-room. 'I think she is taking her music lesson, ma'am, ' faltered the girl who had ventured diffidently to impart this information to the schoolmistress. 'Think?' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Calf, Vol. 1 of 3: Or, Prodigality and Speculation in the Nineteenth Century On the seventh of last month (September, 1849) a leading article appeared in the Times journal, recommending a work to be written, which was to be "of eminent advantage to the public," and for which "a very rapid sale" was predicted. The writer went on to say - "we would take any young author in hand who is burning with a noble thirst for literary distinction, and give him the plan of a work, which, if well executed, would carry his name into every gentleman's library and every merchant's counting-house in the three kingdoms. The subject should be 'Railway Frauds.'" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Calf, Vol. 1 of 2: A Novel There was a grim smile on the principal's coarsely featured countenance as she gave this order. Miss Rylance was not one of the six who had started up to do the schoolmistress's bidding. She was a young lady who considered her mission in life anything rather than to carry a message - a young lady who thought herself quite the most refined and elegant thing at Mauleverer Manor, and so entirely superior to her surroundings as to be absolved from the necessity of being obliging. But Miss Pew's voice, when fortified by anger, was too much even for Miss Rylance's calm sense of her own merits, and she rose at the lady's bidding, laid down her ivory penholder on the neatly-written exercise, and walked out of the room quietly, with the slow and stately deportment imparted by a long 'course of in struction from Madame Rigolette, the fashionable dancing-mistress. Book excerpt: "This book examines the history of different versions of the legend of Prince Golden Calf and sheds light on important aspects of Chinese culture as manifested and interpreted in China and Korea. It highlights various cultural connotations of cows and how they hold a central place not only in Chinese agriculture but also in terms of China's ethnic composition, religious symbolism, landscape names, and other famous Chinese stories involving cows. The book also further position the story in a broader global framework. This study broadens the fields of translation of and research on East Asian religion, literature, and culture by expanding our knowledge in Asian studies, folklore studies, and the study of animal representations in literature. Its transcultural and transregional approach lays the foundation for a new, innovative, and inclusive perspective on the development of premodern East Asian literature and culture"--

Book The Golden Calf between Bible and Qur an

Download or read book The Golden Calf between Bible and Qur an written by Michael E. Pregill and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-30 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the story of the Israelites' worship of the Golden Calf in its Jewish, Christian, and Muslim contexts, from ancient Israel to the emergence of Islam. It focuses in particular on the Qur'an's presentation of the narrative and its background in Jewish and Christian retellings of the episode from Late Antiquity. Across the centuries, the interpretation of the Calf episode underwent major changes reflecting the varying cultural, religious, and ideological contexts in which various communities used the story to legitimate their own tradition, challenge the claims of others, and delineate the boundaries between self and other. The book contributes to the ongoing reevaluation of the relationship between Bible and Qur'an, arguing for the necessity of understanding the Qur'an and Islamic interpretations of the history and narratives of ancient Israel as part of the broader biblical tradition. The Calf narrative in the Qur'an, central to the qur'anic conception of the legacy of Israel and the status of the Jews of its own time, reflects a profound engagement with the biblical account in Exodus, as well as being informed by exegetical and parascriptural traditions in circulation in the Qur'an's milieu in Late Antiquity. The book also addresses the issue of Western approaches to the Qur'an, arguing that the historical reliance of scholars and translators on classical Muslim exegesis of scripture has led to misleading conclusions about the meaning of qur'anic episodes.

Book The Complete Works of Zacharias Tanee Fomum on Leadership Vol 1

This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of the complete works of Zacharias Tanee Fomum on leadership carries five fascinating titles: BOOK 1: KNOWING THE GOD OF UNPARALLELED GOODNESS BOOK 2: THE SECRET OF SPIRITUAL REST BOOK 3: BROKENNESS: THE SECRET OF SPIRITUAL OVERFLOW BOOK 4: SPIRITUAL NOBILITY: THE STORY OF JOSEPH BOOK 5: LEADING GOD’S PEOPLE: THE EXAMPLE OF MOSES The messages in this book were shared during two leadership courses in the city of Yaounde in the years 1979 and 1980. They are produced here just as they were prepared for those meetings. There was no thought in our minds then that they would ever go into print. God has however confirmed many of the things that he led us to share with his people then and we feel led to put them into book form and share them with as many of His children as He will allow us to. God calls into spiritual leadership all who make spiritual progress. all believers are called to be spiritual leaders. Some will lead one person, others will lead ten people and others will lead one thousand people and so forth. You are a spiritual leader! Someone is looking on you to lead him to Christ or to lead him along the christian way. You must become and continue to be the leader that God meant you to be. God has called you to lead one, two, ten, one hundred, one thousand or more people. He has called you to lead them out of the captivity of sin and self into the fullness of the obedient and sanctified life. In order to accomplish your job, you must be rightly related to Him. Spiritual leadership is conditioned on a profound and intimate knowledge of God. The spiritual leader is a man hungry for God, a seeker after God. Without a deep and intimate knowledge of God, any leadership that is exercised is merely natural based on natural talent and this can never satisfy the heart of God. leadership is conditioner in a life sacrificed, wasted and sold out for others. Without this, a man may just be a seeker after God. With this, the seeker after God becomes, in addition, a seeker of men and that is spiritual leadership. God gives limitless authority to those whom He puts into leadership. He backs them without reservation and judges them with greatest severity. Divine privileges carry with them great responsibilities. All who are called by God into leadership must walk carefully before Him or be disqualified. Victory is possible for the obedient leader. Be one such. These messages are sent out with prayer that the Lord will use them to reach out to the needs of some in the Body of His son; they are sent out with prayer that the Lord will use them to encourage those who are called to leadership in the Bride of His son.
