Book excerpt: “On a bench in the central parc of Amsterdam, an old salt is sharing his memories with a contemporary senior, who spent his life maintaining the parc. The man is a simple but content pensioner who cared for the myriad of plants and flowers with dedication but the boundaries of the parc determined his living space, he never travelled beyond them. With increasing wonder and amazement, he listens in awe to the sometimes blood curdling narratives of the old sailor sitting next to him. The stories are opening a door to a world he never knew existed, revealing horizons that were always beyond his observation, until now. The sea smart sailor takes him to far away places, to the brothels in tropical harbours, the fights, the deadly danger but also the victories and the magic of a life spent at sea. The many amorous adventures, the brotherhood among seadogs, the tragedies, but also the enormous wealth resulting from risky undertakings, and how to quickly lose those fortunes again. The adventures are so realistically told that he imagines himself in the role of the sailor, but when the narrator pauses, to refresh his memories, the man contemplates about his own uneventful life. As soon as the mariner continues however, he imagines himself threatened by the enormous Komodo dragons on the Indonesian Gili Motang Island or finds himself in a deadly battle with the Nazi criminals of the ODESSA organization in Argentina. But he also wakes up in the warm embrace of the wicked woman married to his boss and he is running for his life again. The Globetrotter, number four in the series, is a novel packed with thrilling adventures, written in the best tradition of Cussler or Grisham.

This book was released on 2024-01-17 with total page 3262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though best known for his adventure novels and humorous stories, Twain was a passionate world traveler and he recorded his journeys in several travel books which were all very popular at the time: "The Innocents Abroad" humorously chronicles Twain's "Great Pleasure Excursion" on board the chartered vessel Quaker City through Europe and the Holy Land in 1867. "Roughing It" follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during the years 1861–1867. The book illustrates many of Twain's early adventures, including a visit to Salt Lake City, gold and silver prospecting, real-estate speculation and a journey to the Kingdom of Hawaii. "Old Times on the Mississippi" is a short account of Twain's experiences as a cub pilot, learning the Mississippi river. "A Tramp Abroad" details Twain's journey through central and southern Europe with his friend. As the two men make their way through Germany, the Alps, and Italy, they encounter situations made all the more humorous by their reactions to them. "Life on the Mississippi" is a memoir by Mark Twain of his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War, recounting his trip along the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans after the War. "Following the Equator" – In an attempt to extricate himself from debt, Twain undertook a tour of the British Empire in 1895, a route chosen to provide numerous opportunities for lectures in English. The book is a social commentary, critical of racism towards Blacks, Asians, and Indigenous groups. "Some Rambling Notes of an Idle Excursion" presents a series of stories about a trip that Twain and some friends took to Bermuda from New York City. "Chapters from my Autobiography" comprises a rambling collection of anecdotes and ruminations of Mark Twain, assembled during his life. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer.

Book excerpt: In the mid-19th century, as new routes opened up, a new generation of travelers embarked on excursions to India, China and Japan. Globetrotters--leisure tourists with a keen interest in experiencing authentic culture--flocked to the East, casting aside preconceptions and gravitating towards what they hoped to be the unchanged landscapes and traditions of Eastern cultures. The relics of their travels--the food they consumed and the souvenirs they brought back--allowed globetrotters to distinguish themselves from common tourists. They proudly returned with accounts that presented a global East, challenging public assumptions about the cultures they had visited and charting a journey of self-transformation. Book Ted Strong Jr

Download or read book Ted Strong Jr written by Sherman L. Jenkins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ted Strong Jr. (1917-1978) was a two-sport athlete, a major star of the Negro Leagues and one of the original Harlem Globetrotters. His prominence in the Negro Leagues led Branch Rickey and other white baseball league owners to consider Strong as one of several possible players to integrate major league baseball, and he was a key force on the basketball court when the Globetrotters defeated the then-invincible Minneapolis Lakers in 1948. Despite his athletic dominance in the 1930s and 40s, Strong Jr. has largely been forgotten in American sports history. In Ted Strong Jr.: The Untold Story of an Original Harlem Globetrotter and Negro Leagues All-Star, Sherman L. Jenkins finally shares the fascinating story of this star athlete. Born Theodore Relighn Strong Jr. in South Bend, Indiana, Strong Jr., the eldest of fourteen children, was fortunate to have a positive influence in his father—a baseball player himself. Strong Jr. went on to play in seven Negro League Baseball East-West All-Star games, receiving the most votes in all of Black baseball history in 1939, and was a key member of the 1940 Harlem Globetrotter basketball team that won the World Professional Basketball Championship. Jenkins details all of this and more, including Strong Jr.’s frustrations with integration efforts promised by white baseball team owners and the eventual decline of the Negro Leagues after the entrance of Jackie Robinson into Major League Baseball. Through hours of interviews with Strong Jr.’s father and with friends and teammates of his brother Othello, along with extensive research of newspaper archives, this book provides rich insights into an unsung hero in the American sports landscape. For baseball and basketball fans of all ages, Ted Strong Jr.’s biography displays for the first time the determination and guts of a man who was idealized by many African Americans in the early twentieth century.

Download or read book Globetrotter written by David Albahari and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Displaced from his home more than twenty years ago as Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia descended into war, Serbian author David Albahari found safety in Canada, where this novel was written. In Globetrotter, Albahari deals with the bewilderments of exile and lost identity, themes he has investigated in earlier works. But in this unsettling experimental book he also enters new arenas, where sexual identity and the nature of blame and guilt attract his scrutiny. Narrated in a single uninterrupted paragraph, the novel takes place in the late 1990s at the Banff Art Centre in the Canadian Rockies. Three men—a painter from Saskatchewan and the narrator of the tale, a writer from Serbia, and a man whose traveling Croatian grandfather long ago jotted his name in a local museum’s guest book—become acquainted, then attached, then fatally entangled. On a climactic mountain hike that seethes with jealousy, desire, shame, and guilt, each man must engage in a final struggle. Albahari seizes his reader’s attention and never yields it in this remarkable, gripping tale.
